Korlen Ferran rose to his feet. "For light and life," He spoke to his padawan Varn Sal another human Jedi who was near completion of his Jedi trials dismissing him from their meditation chamber.
Korlen watched him leave his chamber and turned to his datapad, a notification from Lara Leona.
"I hope to still see you tonight. Thank you again, Korlen."
They had met during an assassination attempt where Korlen had cut down a small group of Nihil, forcing themselves on the senator's associate. He grabbed Lara by the shoulder and shoved his gas mask into her hands.
She stared at him, confused and trying to catch her breath as she fought for air that wouldn't fill her lungs, but he shoved her hands up to her face and told her to put it on.
Fear etched its way onto her features and worked through the terror in her eyes. The whole world was tinged with red. When she finally began to breathe again, he helped her through the gas to safety.
Once Lara was safe, Korlen had returned to help Elzar Mann, his old master and Varn to defeat the remaining Nihil.
Korlen had almost finished assisting in the clear-up when Lara appeared, gas mask in hand; it was only now, when she strode across the plaza of the senate building, that he realised her beauty. She looked like a goddess with her auburn hair and bright green eyes. Her white and green dress matched perfectly as it flowed down her body to her knees. Skin glowing in Coruscant's bright lights, she smiled at him.
"I owe you my life and my dignity," She spoke softly and gracefully.
"I did no more than my duty commands. My name is Korlen Ferran, and thank you," He said, taking the gas mask from her. "However, maybe for now, you should keep ahold of this," placing the mask back in her hands.
"And I am Lara Leona, and I am the indebted one. Will you not need it?"
"The Nihil does not seem to stop these days. I have the force to protect myself; not all others do."
Lara looked at him; a real Jedi stood before her, he was a handsome man, but it was the power she desired. She looked at the weapon at his waist. Moments ago, it cut a man in two. Now it hung at his side, a symbol of hope and safety.
"Will you come to my residence? for Dinner? as a thank you from me." Speaking softly, not breaking eye contact, "At least allow me to try and repay the debt I owe."
"No debt is owed. But I will not reject such a generous offer." He spoke as they began to walk to the main steps of the Senate building's entrance.
"May I have your Datapad? I'll put the address in there, and you can come tonight if other duties don't stop you."
Korlen nodded and handed her the data pad; she quickly entered her address and returned it to him.
"Until tonight, then." She said, finally breaking eye contact as she began to walk away.
Korlen couldn't help himself but admire her rounded ass as she walked away. He immediately chastised himself for allowing such thoughts and her beauty to influence him. After all, a Jedi was not allowed any attachment, but Korlen could not deny that Lara had caught his attention when he had saved her from being suffocated by the Nihil.
Korlen beckoned Varn over, "I suggest we take a moment to meditate, Varn. The Nihil's infiltration into the republic has gone deeper than ever before, and we must be prepared for what's to come," he said, looking at him with a stern expression.
Varn nodded in agreement. "Yes, you're right, master. It's time for us to clear our minds and focus on the task ahead." Varn followed swiftly after his master heading to the Temple.
--
Doubt crossed Korlen's face. Had he accepted the offer simply to take her thanks, or was he genuinely looking at her as no Jedi should--an attractive woman? Already his palms were damp from his nervousness, and he wiped them on his robes.
Though the Jedi had taught him his entire life to be stoic and ignore his emotions, recent months fighting the Nihil had made it nearly impossible. He had lost numerous friends in their battles, and all he could find solace in was one small positive experience - but even that joy was met with a warring inner conflict.
Lara wanted to thank Korlen, and he should honour that, but now he also knew how difficult it would be for him not to look at her like any ordinary man would. Not willing to break his promise and believing in the strength of the force to guide him along the right path, he boarded a sky car to take him to Lara's apartment in Coruscant.
As the cab flew through the city, Korlen watched the lights fly past, Coruscant, the centre of the universe. The home of the Jedi order and the Republic. Yet threat surrounded all of them. The Nihil were everywhere, and the pressure of protecting these people weighed immensely on him, yet his confidence waned. He had become distracted today; he had to prove to himself he was still a Master Jedi the people of the republic could rely on.
Arriving, Korlen strode to the door to the apartment, tapping the buzzer, "It's Jedi Master Korlen Ferran. Is Lara there?"
"I'm so glad you came, Korlen."
