Chapter 3
Jake Bryce grabbed his bag, a large carry-all, from the carousel and made his way toward the exit of LAX Airport.
The night before, he'd received a number of messages from possible clients, almost all of them asking if he would be in LA. He had decided there and then to make a trip, packed a bag, booked an open flight ticket and headed to the airport.
He'd spent most of his flight using the plane's wi-fi and replying to the multitude of messages he had received on his work phone, sending a confirmation to each of the many people who had messaged him that he would indeed be in LA for an indefinite amount of time.
As he approached the exit to the airport, he saw a man, standing by a town car, holding a sign that simply said "Jake Bryce from NY".
He approached the man, and confirmed his name, showing his ID.
"Welcome to LA!" said the taxi driver, as he took Jake's bag and put it in the trunk. "You must be important, someone called about an hour ago, said you'd be landing soon and arranging a pickup, they said it was urgent."
Jake got in the car, the driver got back behind the wheel, and the cab moved off, leaving the airport and heading to the freeway.
As the car drove along the freeway, Jake looked out of the window at the iconic skyline of Los Angeles.
"Just like in the movies, eh? Your first time in LA?" said the driver.
"Yeh," replied Jake, "I always wanted to visit though. Weather is a lot better than New York, that's for sure."
"Tell me about it, I moved here from Brooklyn 10 years ago, and I'm still not used to it. So, are you here for business?" Enquired the car driver.
"I guess yeh, I'm here on business" replied Jake, declining to elaborate further "So, do you know who it was that requested my pickup?" He asked, trying to glean some information about his next client.
"No sir, we just got a call, asking for a pickup and were given your name and flight details. Couple of us in the office thought it might be a prank. Like how long can we keep someone waiting in an airport holding a sign, ya know?" Replied the driver "So, this business, is it a secret?"
"Yeh, I can't say much more, sorry. Less you know the better." Said Jake, not wanting to come off as cryptic but not wanting to potentially involve an innocent in something not entirely legal.
"Say no more, sir" chuckled the driver. "Name's Johnny, by the way. Figured we have a bit of a drive left, if we're gonna talk you should at least know my name since I know yours."
"Nice to meet you, Johnny. If it's okay with you though, I'm gonna shut my eyes for a bit, it's been a long day." said Jake.
"Go right ahead, sir. I'll wake you when we arrive, if you're still out." Said Johnny.
"Good man." Said Jake, as he shut his eyes and drifted off.
Some time later, Jake was awoken by being tapped on his shoulder.
"We've arrived, sir." Said Johnny.
Jake stretched and got out of the car. Johnny had already taken his bag out of the trunk and put it on the sidewalk nearby. He looked around. Every house was walled and gated. He checked his phone, to get the address details.
"Johnny, you know where I'm meant to be going?" He asked. "This has kinda been sprung on me."
Johnny replied as he was getting back in the car. He pointed to the nearest gate. "That's the one. 1097."
Johnny got in the driver's seat, shut the door, then turned to talk to Jake through the window.
"Good luck with your business, Sir," he said. "It was nice to meet you."
"Likewise, Johnny." Said Jake. "What's the cost?"
"Already taken care of sir, paid in advance" replied Johnny.
Jake extended his hand. Johnny took it and the pair shook hands, Jake slipping Johnny a decent tip as they did so.
"Thank you very much sir. Goodbye and good luck with your business. If you need another ride, call the company and ask for me" said Johnny, handing Jake a card.
"Shall do, and thanks. Goodbye Johnny." said Jake.
The town car started and drove off. Jake lifted his bag and slung it over his shoulder.
He approached the gate, and saw there was an intercom. He pressed the button and waited.
He heard a female voice. "Yes?" It asked.
