Sheldon was glad to get out of New York City. He never anticipated all of the women at Fox News accepting his advances. He hoped his upcoming visit to Chicago wouldn't taint his ability to put aside all of the sex he had there and focus on making Angela his. He knew he could easily forget about returning to New York and Fox News Corp. and their offer to make him the Science Editor. He just had to convince Angela to be his and spend the rest of their life together.
He called Angela to let her know he'd be in Chicago in less than two day. She told him he would be there alone. She was leaving in the morning for an undercover sting operation, but she couldn't go into any further details.
He understood and told her he'd head back to California. He didn't tell her he was going there to break things off with Amy and head back to her. He'd surprise her and be free to move to Chicago. He knew Northwestern was nearby and he'd love to join their program.
Sheldon changed trains in Chicago and never felt happier just knowing where his future lies. He decided he had a couple extra days and decided to head back down to Texas and visit his mother and Missy again.
Halfway to Texas his cell phone went off. He looked at the caller ID and saw it was from the FBI. His face lit up and he answered it immediately, "Hello Angela, I was just thinking about you."
The voice on the other side wasn't Angela, "Hello, Dr. Cooper? My name is Edward Preswick; I'm the station chief here in the Chicago office. I'm calling you because according to Special Agent Page, you are her immediate contact."
Sheldon was suddenly worried, "Is everything all right? Is Angela okay?"
He cleared his voice, "I'm sorry to inform you that Special Agent Page was a casualty in an operation she was involved in and she didn't survive. I'm sorry, but we need you to come and take possession of her body."
Sheldon was shocked and devastated. He thought he had issues when he began this journey back and forth across the country, but now, when he finally knew what he wanted, it was torn from his so suddenly he didn't think he could go on.
"Dr. Cooper, did you hear me, when could you come here?"
"Aw, sorry, we were just casual acquaintances. I'm a total wreck at funerals and can't do this. If you would, please contact her ex-husband or parents, sorry, I have to go!" He hung up and nearly ran to his stateroom. He locked the door and buried his face in the pillow and screamed out loud.
Sheldon woke up the next morning still in the clothes he was wearing last night. He checked with the conductor and managed to find out his current location. He got off at the next stop and made his way to the ticket office. He purchased a ticket back east. He had to get to Princeton and speak with Beverly about his current stasis. He was an emotional wreck and wondered around town seeing his train back east wasn't for another four hours. Being in Springfield Missouri, he passed the time visiting a number of historical sites and wandered aimlessly and found himself back at the train station just in time to board for his trip back east.
Once settled in his stateroom, he called Beverly and was very somber, "Dr. Hofstadter, this is Dr. Cooper, I'm heading back east and should be there in about three days. I have a number of issues to discuss with you. I hope you can set aside some private time, just you and I."
She was immediately concerned, "Sheldon, what happened, why are you sounding like the end of the world is at hand."
He broke down and cried, "It is Beverly, my soulmate, Special Agent Angela Page was killed performing her duties. I don't know what to do."
She took a deep breath and tried to sort out what to say without ruining him, "Okay Sheldon, here is what I want you to do. I take it you have a stateroom, correct?"
He nodded and realized she couldn't see him, "Yes, yes I do."
"Okay, go there and draw down the curtains and put on some soothing music from your phone. Nothing upbeat, but at the same time nothing completely somber. Close your eyes and think about the good times you had with her. Afterwards, order room service, nothing heavy; something light, definitely no alcohol. Do not contact anyone at home, you may break down and tell them what happened and that is the last thing you need now. I'll get you through this and afterwards, you'll need the support of your friends in California. Don't burn any bridges there; there is no need for them to even know about Angela, especially Amy, if you still want a relationship with her. How did things work out in New York?"
He took a long cleansing breath, "It was an experience like no other. My head is still swimming. There were so many beautiful women and they all desired me. My confidence was sky-high when I left there, but after hearing the news about Angela, it's now at an all-time low."
