What a shitty day, I decide with a sigh as I watch the rain splatter against the windshield before the wipers methodically clear them away. What an awful, shitty day. First, I woke up late and had to skip my usual morning shower to avoid being tardy to work. Then, I had to spend most of my shift enduring one-on-one time with my boss, an overbearing, sexually-harassing, halitosis-having jackass, who decided today was the day he would finally teach me to use our new software program. The only upside to the situation was that he promised to also do my yearly review, which he should have done a month ago, and I was really looking forward to a raise, even if it was only a .25 increase. I needed it. Guess what? I didn't get a raise! Instead, I got put on a probationary work period for the next month while I "learn the new program", and then Bob's going to reevaluate me before giving me my raise. I'm so pissed. This has nothing to do with me needing time to learn the program and everything to do with Bob's bruised ego after I told him to keep his grubby hands to himself before I submit a complaint to HR. It wouldn't be the first time someone reported him for inappropriate behavior, but alas, my threat cost me my raise. The icing on the cake? Because I was running late this morning, I forgot to check the weather, didn't bring an umbrella, and got caught in the downpour on my way to the bus stop. I get to finish off my crappy day with a soggy, cold ride on the public transit.
The only, and I mean only, thing I am looking forward to right now is a nice hot shower, followed by dinner in bed with my boyfriend. I wouldn't mind a good, tension-relieving fuck after that, but honestly, I'll settle for a cuddle sesh if that's all Chris will give me. I called him at lunchtime to let him know how my day was going, and he promised to come by after work with an assortment of tasty side dishes from my favorite Chinese restaurant. With orange chicken, pork fried rice, and sautéed veggies on the brain, I was able to power through the rest of my day.
Upon exiting the bus at my stop, I promptly step into deep puddle that soaks through my black pumps and makes me gasp in shock. I quickly step out of it, stomping my feet against the sidewalk in an attempt to drain out some of the cold water. Deciding it's useless, I bend over and remove the high heels from my feet. Sighing as I straighten up, I hurry out of the rain and into the lobby of my apartment building. Normally, I take the stairs, but today I punch the button for the elevator. The doors slide open immediately and I step inside, pressing the worn button for floor number four. I wrap my arms around myself to quell the shivering on the ride up and smile gratefully when the doors open again and my apartment is finally in sight.
After unlocking the door and stepping inside, I drop my shoes on the mat, hang my purse on the hook, and call out hello to the two males sitting on the couch in my living room, both deeply engrossed in the TV screen. As I approach, I realize it's because they're playing a videogame. I quirk up an eyebrow, although neither guy notices, finding it difficult to believe Jeremy, at long last, convinced Chris to pick up a controller and play a game with him. The past four months that Jeremy has been living with me, he's asked Chris to play nearly every time he's over and Chris always says no.
"What's this?" I ask them as I lean in to kiss Chris on the cheek.
"Hey babe," Chris greets, his deep blue eyes glancing away from the television screen to send me a smile. "I didn't hear you come in."
"'Cause you were too busy getting your ass handed to you," Jeremy teases with a laugh. He nods his head at me, his way of saying hello, and I roll my eyes and smile back, as per usual. "What's up, Lex?"
"How long have you been here?" I question Chris curiously, my eyes scanning the coffee table which is littered with cans of soda and quite a few empty cardboard containers of takeout food. Chinese, by the looks of it.
"My last meeting was canceled," Chris says distractedly, his focus now returned to the videogame. "I picked up the food and then headed over."
Hang on. Did he just say... "You mean, this food?" I pick up a few of the food containers to show him, "It's gone. Did you guys leave me anything? Because it kinda looks like you pigs devoured my dinner." The annoyance that had been dissipating since I walked in the door returns.
"Oh, shit," Chris curses, but I frown when I notice he is talking to the TV and not about his mistake at eating my food. He motions for me to move aside so he can get a better view, and then says, "Uh...no, no, babe, we didn't eat all of it. Yours is on the counter in the kitchen."
Jeremy snorts and I glare at the back of his head as I walk behind the couch towards the kitchen. On the counter is the paper bag from my favorite Chinese restaurant, and inside the bag is one white box. I open the lid to reveal...sautéed vegetables. No chicken. No rice. Not even an eggroll. "What the fuck is this?!" I cry out as I make my way back over to the boys. This time, I don't respect their game-time and step right in front of the TV. "Is this supposed to be my dinner? It's just veggies, Chris. This is crap!" For the record, I'm not normally such a bitch, but as I said, it's been a really bad day, and the one thing that was supposed to make it better is now sitting in the bellies of two man-children who don't seem to care.
"Move," Jeremy heckles me, "Come on, Lexi, move out of the way!"
"Fuck you, Jeremy!" I snap, nearly throwing the open container of sautéed veggies at the both of them. "I'm literally having the worst fucking day, and you both suck! Thanks a lot for eating my food!" I slam the container onto the coffee table before turning my back on them and practically stomping down the hallway to the bathroom.
"Wait, wait, wait!" Chris calls after me, jumping up from the couch, "Why are you so mad? Babe!"
At the doorway, I turn to look at him, explaining impatiently, "I am mad because I called you earlier and told you I was having the day from Hell, and I was really looking forward to that Chinese food, and now I can't have it!"
Chris looks taken aback, "Jeez, I can make you something else."
"I don't want something else!" I also don't care if I look like a crazy girlfriend. Chris and I have been together for over a year now, he should know how I get when I don't eat. "I just want to get out of these wet clothes and take a shower."
"Alright, well..." A devilish smirk appears on his handsome, clean-shaven face, "I'll join you."
I frown, shutting down that idea quickly, "I don't think so."
