"What the fuck! Asshole!"
Her yelling drowned out the moans from the man who was under her on the city sidewalk. She flailed her arms, pulled herself up and stood next to him.
"I should kick you for grabbing me like that. Why'd you do it, Asswipe?"
Reg held his left elbow in obvious pain. "I'm sorry," he moaned. "You were about to be hit by a car coming around the corner."
"Oh, sure. Like you think I can't see? No need to grab me and pull me down like that!"
"Hey Lady," an old Asian man said, "He's right. I saw that car turning right and this guy here pulled you back just in time. He tripped and fell down, bringing you with him."
"So, do you believe me now?" Reg asked. "I do you a big favor and all you can do is yell at me. Shit, I think I broke my elbow."
"Well, it would serve you right for grabbing me like you did."
"Lady, didn't you hear me? I saw it all and he saved your ass, if you ask me."
There were a few seconds of uncomfortable silence followed by a softer tone. "Oh, uh, I guess, uh, maybe I overreacted. I was just shocked. A girl can't be too sure when things like this happen."
"Look, I'm sorry that you were scared, but I did what I did to help. Maybe you could help me? Could you please pull my phone from my right shirt pocket and call 9-1-1?"
"OK. Here, what's your password?"
"None needed," he groaned. "Just hit the emergency icon in the bottom right corner."
After she called in the emergency and reported no one was in major danger, she sat with him until the EMTs arrived. She introduced herself as Noelle, apologized for her yelling at him and made sure he was taken care of. After learning his name and once the EMTs arrived, she slipped away walking across the same crosswalk which he had pulled her from.
Two hours later Reg sat in the ER waiting area and read for the tenth time the sign that emergencies took priority over nonlife-threatening injuries. He appreciated the splint which the EMTs had placed and eventually almost drifted off to sleep.
Suddenly, someone sat down next to him. He kept his eyes closed and tried to ignore the person until he heard her speak up.
"Look, Reg, I feel really bad about yelling at you. It's scary for a tiny woman like me to find herself pulled down on the ground."
His eyes popped open to see her clearly for the first time. Noelle was an attractive woman with beautiful blue eyes and a smooth, pale complexion.
"It's OK, Noelle. Really, I understand. Why did you come down here?"
"Once I had a chance to let the shock wear off, I felt bad about yelling at you and wanted to see if I could help. It looks like they haven't even seen you yet."
"No. It seems this is not as serious as a cardiac arrest," he joked. "I'll be fine, you can go ahead and head on home."
"No, I can't leave you like this. Let me go up and see how long it's gonna take."
Once she stood up and walked to the reception desk, Reg noted she was quite petite. That was attractive to him as he generally considered himself to be too short. He always regretted the fact and how it limited the number of women he could feel comfortable with.
When she returned, she told him he was next and sure enough a few minutes later he was called back. The surly nurse would not let Noelle come back with him, so he told her to go home and thanked her again for coming by.
His time in the ER was fairly quick. The ER doc reported the elbow was cracked and surgery was not needed. He would need a splint and weekly visits to a community orthopedist. With a prescription for mild pain meds in his right hand and his left elbow bent ninety degrees in a splint, he wandered back to the waiting area with plans to call a Lyft home.
Noelle came running up to him and asked him the news. She smiled when he told her it wasn't all 'bad'. "Now we need to get you home. My car is right outside."
"Oh, Noelle, that isn't really necessary. I'll grab a Lyft."
"No, I can't let you do that. I realized that you saved me from a major injury. This is the least I can do. You come with me."
He walked reluctantly with her to the pharmacy, picked up the pills and went out to her car. She had a Honda CRV and when he asked her about it, she replied that it was a good choice for short people.
"Well, just how tall are you?"
"Why, Sir, if I stretch all the way, I top out at a full five feet, well, almost, thank you very much. And don't give me any shit about it either," she laughed.
"Trust me, I won't. I've always been unhappy with my five feet, five inches. Oh, and by the way, you sure have a potty mouth," he teased.
"I guess I do. I've had to stand up for myself so much that I use bad language to tell people I'm serious and not some little girl. And at five-five you tower over me, so you're tall enough in my book."
He gave her instructions to his place, which was a loft apartment above a small townhome near his work. He thanked her for the ride and she jumped out of the car saying, "Not so fast. I want to make sure you're ok."
They went up the steps and he knew immediately he would not be able to get in by himself. The door was sticky and the handle needed to be pulled out with the left hand while the key was turned with the right. He was unable to do this simple task with his arm in a splint. Once he explained his problem, Noelle was able to get the door open and lead him inside. He showed her the way up the stairs to the inner door, which was far easier to open with one hand.
"Here is my castle, be it ever so humble, yada, yada, yada."
Noelle strolled around the small common room, which was separated from the kitchen by a simple island. "You have a nice spot here," she said. "How are you going to manage with just the one arm?"
"Oh, I'll figure it out. Thanks for bringing me home, I really appreciate it."
Noelle walked over to the refrigerator and took a peek in. "I see you don't have much in here to eat. You won't starve, will you?"
"No, I won't. I usually eat out, sometimes I get food delivered. I'll be fine."
"Silly, how will you get back in? Do you expect someone to be there for you to handle the front door?"
"Noelle, I appreciate all the help you have given me today, particularly since we got off on the wrong foot. But there's no need for you to worry about me. I'll be fine, really."
"OK," she replied. "Show me how you plan on getting dinner tonight and I'll leave."
Reg had slipped his phone in his right back pocket where he could reach it and he pulled it out and showed how he could dial it.
"I see. Now how about paying? Can you do that?"
"Sure, I'll just get my wallet... "
"Uh-huh. And where is it? Stuffed in your left rear pocket, which you can't get to. Listen, Reg, this one example shows you need some help. You can't do this solo. That's what friends and family are for. Who you gonna call?"
"My family is in SoCal and my best buddy recently moved to Austin for a new job. I honestly don't have anyone I can rely on, unfortunately."
"Sure you do, Dummy. You got me. I'll help until you can at least open the front door."
