Chapter 20

Comfort...

That was what Julia was to me... amongst other things...

In my weakest hours, she was always there to comfort me. When I needed her the most, I could count on her to come to my rescue.

There were a million adjectives to describe what Julia meant to my life...

It started off with hatred, but quickly turned into pleasure. Then, there was a time that was mostly excitement. But now... however... what she meant the most to me... was...

... comfort...

There was something Julia was hiding from me; something that wouldn't let her get too close. That would explain why there were moments when she would disappear from my life, leaving me so cold. But whenever I needed her the most, whenever hard times would come to my life, she would return and become...

... my comfort.

What did this mean for our past? I really didn't know. But as the memories flooded through my mind, every single moment we ever spent together... I now looked at them so differently.

She had always been my comfort; I just didn't realize it.

What did this mean for our future? I didn't have that answer either. I didn't know what would become of us, but I feared the day she would come when she would completely disappear for my life, and no longer be...

... my comfort.

That was the question that now remained with me. That was the biggest dilemma in my life.

Despite everything she had ever done to me: whether demeaning, sexual, polite, or even embarrassing... I always wondered... when she would exit my life... and stop being...

... my comfort.

***

It was my last day on campus. Finals were done, and I was just waiting to head back home for the Summer. Tina had already left, and once again, I hadn't heard from Julia since... since the day she... stuck her tongue in my ass...

Though it was quiet, and I was alone, I tried to enjoy my last night of living in a dorm. I was starting the difficult portion of medical school the following semester, and some of my credits had to be earned outside of campus. To make things easier, I was getting an apartment right outside of campus so I could go between my work studies and courses more efficiently.

Though I was excited to have a bigger place, I was going to miss my dorm room. So many of my college memories had taken place there. But as I reminisced upon them, I realized that most of the important ones... involved Julia...

I had no idea if she was still on campus. My school had become quite a ghost town with everyone finishing finals. Still reminiscing about my time living on campus, I decided to spend one last night there, hanging out by myself.

Before I realized Julia was... my comfort... I used to rely on another activity to escape reality whenever times were bad. I would often play video games to distract myself. But since I rarely had any free time with my busy workload, I wasn't able to do it as often as I wanted to. I decided to spend my last night on campus playing video games.

Somehow, playing video games by myself didn't seem so pathetic anymore. I no longer felt like a loser for doing it. However, as I heard a knock coming from my door, I quickly became startled and even turned my TV off for some reason, thinking it would make me look like a loser once again.

When I gained my bearings, I quickly realized how strange it was to have someone knocking on my door. I figured I was one of the only students left on campus. I had no idea who could be stopping by my dorm room.

Of course, it was her... Julia.

I opened the door and my heart raced as I laid my eyes on her once again. However, I wasn't scared like I used to be whenever I would see her. We had already moved past that... And also... something about her... felt off...

Her eyes were dull, lacking that sparkle I normally saw in them. It was true that she had looked tired as of late, but in this moment, her eyes were completely off from that beautiful brown hue that they normally were.

And even though I had seen her in normal clothes before; a t-shirt and shorts, something about her seemed so unkept. It wasn't her outfit, however. She was lacking that glow that she always had. I was unsure of what was going on, but something was definitely off.

With practically no change in her facial expressions, she walked in and greeted me. "Hi, Phillip."

A bit confused from her seemingly empty demeanor, I stood there, holding the door open, and answered, "Hey, Julia," as I watched her walk in.

Her words sounded normal, but something still felt off. However, it was still pleasantly surprising to hear her talk to me without showing any signs of malice.

"What are you up to?" she asked, while taking a look at my chair, which still had my controller on it, even though I turned the TV off.

Figuring there is no point in trying to hide what I was doing, I switched the TV back on with my remote before answering. "I was just playing a game."

It was always kind of embarrassing to tell girls that I played video games, for some reason. When we were in high school, Julia would call me a nerd for playing games instead of hanging out with friends.

Tina also scoffed at me whenever I mentioned it. It wasn't that she said anything negative about it. She would just talk about it as if it were childish and a waste of time.

The only moment I really felt insulted by Tina was when I asked her if she wanted to play. I thought it might be a fun little activity for the both of us to try out.

It's not like I expected her to be good or anything. However, she sort of laughed at me before condescendingly answering, "No, thank you."

To my surprise, Julia didn't seem to have anything negative to say when she found out I was playing video games that night. "You don't have to stop playing, just because I'm here," she offered before taking a seat on the edge of my bed. "I just figured I'd stop by and see if you were here."

Staring at the controller, I chose to ignore my game now that Julia was in my room. I immediately refocused my eyes on her and shrugged my shoulders. "Yeah, I guess I'm here for one more night. But I'm actually surprised you're still here..."

Once again, she gave me that empty look before turning away and staring off into the distance. "Yeah, I'm still here for now..."

"Are you going home tomorrow?"

Now, she was the one shrugging her shoulders, but in an almost nonchalant way. Refocusing her gaze at me, she responded, "I don't know... I guess I don't have anything set in stone..."

Staring at her, I scratched my head and asked, "What do you mean?"

"Oh, nothing..."

"Is there something you want to talk about?"

"Nope... That's not why I stopped by. I actually didn't even think you would be here. I just figured I'd knock on your door in case you were."

My brain was still as confused as ever. Everything she explained was so short, and there was something still so different in her approach.

Staying persistent, I asked, "Well, now that you're here... is there anything I can do for you?"

She stared at me for a moment, bracing herself against my mattress with her hands. All the while, hardly any emotion showed in her face as she gave me her response. "Not exactly. I just figured I'd see you, if you were here."

Still, I was thrown off. The woman who always had a plan seemingly had no reason to be in my room; yet she was here. We stared at each other for a few awkward moments. She then finally broke the silence, suggesting, "I can leave if I'm bothering you."

"No, no! You... never... bother me..."

"Do you just want to play your game again?"

"No... Since you're here... I'd rather hang out with you..."

"I can just sit here while you play," she suggested, appearing not even a bit sarcastic. "That sounds kind of nice, actually."

"Are you serious? You actually wouldn't mind?"

"Why would I?"

My shoulders slumped as I became a bit nervous. "I don't know... Don't you think that it's lame or something?"

She shook her head nonchalantly. "No. I've actually never played video games unless you count the games on my phone. But I know some people really like them..."

I swore, I remembered a time when she made me feel so pathetic for playing video games by myself instead of actually hanging out with people. But now, things seemed so different, for some reason. I didn't know if she had truly changed, or if she had dropped some sort of act.

Offering the controller to her, I asked, "Do you want to try it?"

After shrugging her shoulders, Julia took the controller from my hand, and answered, "Sure."

My eyes perked up as I witnessed her staring at the controller, trying to figure out the buttons. "You're really going to try it?"

"Yeah, why not? But you're going to have to tell me what to do."

"Oh, right!"

"What kind of game is this?"

"It's a war game," I explained, still taken aback that she was actually taking part in one of my interests. "You have to go through this course and shoot the other team."

To my pleasant surprise, not only was Julia tolerating the video game, something that she never actually did before, she was legitimately listening to my instructions, almost taking it seriously. Of course, I didn't expect her to be good or anything, and I especially didn't expect her to ever play again, but it was sort of nice how she diligently listened instead of just making a joke of the whole thing.

After showing her the buttons, she was surprisingly good, especially for someone who had never played before. And though she didn't seem incredibly interested in the game, she gave a genuine effort and even asked questions.

"How do I aim again?"

"Oh, like this!" I said as I placed my hand over hers and forced her into using the correct toggle.

I suppose for most nerds like me, this would have been a nerve-wrecking moment, placing my hand over hers like that. However, Julia had already forced us into crossing much tougher boundaries early on. I was still timid to be around her, but now, it wasn't because of her touch; I was simply intimidated because she seemed like a goddess to me.

"You're actually doing pretty well for your first time," I mentioned, watching as she impressively worked through the controls and the objective. "Are you sure you've never played video games while growing up?"

Shaking her head, she immediately dismissed the idea. "I never had a gaming system. And I rarely went over to my friends' houses."

"Oh, really...? You were always so popular. I figured you spent a lot of time with friends."

"Not really... My mom was kind of strict..."

It struck me to hear her talking about her mom for the first time with me. But though I knew it wasn't my place to ask, my curiosity led me to another question about her parents. "How about your dad?"

Still focusing on the screen as she grew more comfortable with the game, she coldly responded, "My dad wasn't really in my life..."

"Wasn't...? Like...?"

"Phillip... if you don't mind... I'd rather not talk about my family," she pointed out, still focusing most of her attention on the video game.

"I'm sorry..."

"It's okay. I just wanted to hang out with you and not worry about my family for once. This is more of a distraction."

Of course, I had a million questions. This was one of those rare times when I thought I was seeing the real Julia instead of the act she had always put up. However, I chose to respect for privacy, seeing as it clearly made her uncomfortable.

Instead of asking further questions, I simply replied, "I understand..."

To my surprise, this miscalculation on my part didn't lead to any further awkwardness. Julia continued playing my game and even wanted to watch me for a round so she could see how someone more proficient played.

About an hour later, I started to wonder if she was getting bored. "Do you want to do something else?" I asked, pausing the game for a second. "We can call it a night, or we can play a different game if you still need a distraction."

"No, I'm fine," she said, sounding satisfied. "But I am a bit surprised that you like a shooting game so much. It doesn't really seem like your style."

"Yeah... it's not my favorite... but it's a really popular game, so I used to play it a lot, hoping to make friends online."

"Oh, really? Well, I don't think you have to worry about that anymore. It seems like you've made plenty of friends by doing what you would normally do, and by being yourself."

Even more so than before, I was taken aback, not knowing what to say, following such a genuine compliment. After an awkward pause, I finally replied, "Thank you... That was really nice..."

"I mean it," she said with a little smile. "You turned out really well."

Still, I was flabbergasted at these compliments from out of nowhere. However, still feeling awkward, I joked, "Are you proud of me or something?"

She stood up to her feet and angled her body towards the door, letting me know she was ready to leave. "Of course I am..." she said in an assertive voice before turning back and smiling at me. "Are you proud of me?"

"Proud of you?" I asked, almost offended that she could ever think that I found her anything less than astounding. "Anyone in the world would be proud of you... You're amazing..."

For only a moment, her smile grew just a bit cheesier. She then turned her body back towards me so we could start our farewells. "I should really get going though. It's already so late."

Just as I was about to say goodbye, Julia walked up to me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. However, unlike when I had touched her hand earlier, I noticed a strange feeling as we held each other in a tight embrace.

I couldn't put my finger on it, but something felt so uneasy as I held her strong body against mine. Then, my eyes perked up as she whispered into my ear, "Thank you for everything you've done for me."

"Of course," I responded as she slowly pulled away from me and made her way to the door. Then, before letting herself out, she waved to me, and said, "Goodbye, Phillip."

"Wait, Julia!" I called out, stopping her just before the door closed. "Can I walk you back?"

With the slightest of smiles, she gazed at me for a second before shaking her head. "I'll be fine, but thank you," she responded. Then, finishing the process this time, she closed the door, leaving me with, "Goodbye, Phillip."

While her footsteps disappeared off into the distance, I was left trying to wrap my mind around everything that happened.

Did Julia truly come over just to play video games with me?

I asked myself, standing still.

And why was her whole demeanor so off-putting tonight?

As I replayed our entire night in my head, I carefully speculated over every little thing she did and spoke. Her words indicated that she was fine, and she just wanted to hang out for a moment. However, I didn't feel satisfied with the energy she had showed me for some reason.

Suddenly, it wasn't just the images from that day that were playing through my mind. Our entire lives; everything we had ever been through was now flashing before me, presenting itself like a call for action.

Having nothing to rely on, besides my own intuition, I grabbed my shoes and rushed out the door, hoping to catch her so I could settle this uneasy feeling. I ran, and I ran, but she had seemingly traveled quite the distance before I decided to act. Now, I was practically running outside of my dormitory, hoping to catch her before she made it back to her residence.

I had made this trip so many times; I could picture every step I'd take a long way, even though my mind was always heavy with anticipation for Julia. A picture of the bridge that went over the highway that split our campus popped into my head, and I wanted to make sure I caught her before she reached that point.

Suddenly, as the stars shined brightly upon me, I could feel myself reaching out for something... the one thing I truly wanted.

It was Julia; it had always been Julia. And in this moment, though I had been nothing but naΓ―ve while reading people, I knew that she somehow needed me.

Through all this time, after all these years... I wanted to be the man she truly needed me to be. I knew it was just her way of teasing, but despite all the humiliation she had ever put me through, for once in my life, I needed to put all inhibitions aside, so I could truly be the person she needed me to be.

If any moment in my life had ever meant something to me, it was this moment right here. My legs were churning as fast as they could, and I was suddenly glad I had been running and doing push-ups for the last couple of years. It had nothing to do with any self-image issue I was dealing with. I was just desperate to get to Julia, and I needed to get to her as fast as I could.

From a distance, I could see her image appearing before me. She saw me running, and for some reason, she turned and ran, herself.

As our shadows passed through the moonlight, I chased her with everything I had, because I wanted to be with her in that moment. And even though she was faster than me, I never gave up hope, and I continued to follow her through the maze of buildings, until we reached that bridge that I wanted to beat her to.

She was so far ahead of me, and gaining distance with every step. But still, no matter how far she got, I could see every strand of her hair blowing in the wind, and I could feel the impact of every step she took vibrating through her body.

By the time I got to the bridge, I was winded and completely out of breath, while she was just standing there, resting her forearms against the rail while looking off into the distance. Turning back towards me, she smiled once again, this time erasing that empty feeling.

"You ran after me?" she asked, watching as I bellowed over while catching my breath. "But... why? I told you I would be okay."

I was breathing so hard, I could hardly speak. But still, I somehow managed to get a few words out. "I had to see you... but you were too fast... I tried to catch up..."

For as long as I could remember, Julia was the most beautiful person I had ever known. But never before did she look so mesmerizing, as she stood under the lights that the Moon and the stars shined for us.

"I outran you," she said, giggling for just a second, just to tease me once again. Then, finally displaying that genuine smile, she turned towards me and extended both of her hands. As I placed mine in hers, and stared into her deep brown eyes, she quietly asked, "Why did you want to catch up to me so badly?"

Feeling guilty that I had even let her escape me in the first place, I turned away for a second and blushed. However, for once in my life, I needed to be the man she truly deserved.

I looked her in the eyes, and I answered, "I just... I wanted to be with you..."

"Why did you want to be with me so badly?"

I could see that something I had done had made her happy, because she no longer had that dull look in her eyes. She was full of life again, and even though she wasn't tormenting me, like she used to, I somehow knew she was once again the Julia I had always known and loved.

Gulping, I started to explain myself, despite how uncomfortable the truth was. "I just didn't want to let you out of my sight... because..."

"It's okay, Phillip," she interrupted, not allowing me to finish my thought. Then, looking so deep into my eyes that I could practically see the stars in hers, she calmed me, once again, by explaining, "I think I know what was going on in your head, but you have nothing to worry about."

In that moment, my life flashed before my eyes; and when I thought about my life, I couldn't think of it without seeing Julia. She was the most important thing to me. She was my treasure, my joy, and my comfort... and even though I could never stop worrying about her, my heart had never felt happier than it did the moment I finally saw her smile with genuine happiness once again.
