Chapter 14

Ty and Nancy were making the rounds, shaking hands, touching elbows, offering drinks. It was almost midnight and most of the regular guests were dancing to music a DJ was playing, collapsed on various pieces of expensive furniture, or watching

Licence to Kill

in the home theater. One of the side rooms had a few expensive video game systems that I'd never seen blaring brightly-colored space battles onto the big-screen TVs within. Several partygoers were outside in the gardens and grounds around but were being ushered back inside by the staff in red vests, which led me to believe we would be going out there next.

"Having fun so far?" Ty asked both of us as he approached. "How are you doing for drinks?"

"Ready to flush some of this out with Pepsi or water," I said. I usually couldn't drink this much without being royally sick. I was either building up a tolerance, or adrenaline and horniness were staving off the effects.

"It's fun," Cary answered in what I had come to think of as her 'on stage' voice. "You obviously put so much work into this, and it shows!"

Ty beamed with pleasure. "I hope neither of you is uncomfortable. To be honest, this was originally planned for a slightly older crowd, and I gave sort of a lot of prep to the other folks. I think it was why Roy and Stacy bailed; they're a fairly new couple and I think they figured they wouldn't be able to handle this. But hey--how long have you two been an item?"

"Since about four hours ago," I answered honestly.

Ty went pale. "Jesus. Uh... that's a lot. This is your guys first date?

My party

?"

Cary nodded. "It was really important to Matt to come support you and be here, and the chance to get all dolled up and let loose sounded good. I was delighted to be his plus one."

"So if you two break up, it could be because my raunchy games took things too far. No pressure." Ty took a swig of his bourbon and looked at Nancy. "What do you think? We should probably let them out of this before the big finale, huh?"

Nancy looked conflicted. "There will be a lot of disappointed partiers. You two have certainly made an impression."

I gave Cary's hip a squeeze with my free hand. "I'm going to bet that it's mostly been Jane here who has done the impressing."

Nancy smirked. "You're just being modest. Carla was basically pulling her panties off for you on the dance floor." She glanced back at Ty. "But you're right, baby. If they're not comfortable, I'd give them a free pass."

Cary and I locked eyes. "No sex, right?" I asked. "Just fooling around."

Ty held up his hand. "Scout's honor." I smirked; we both knew he had dropped out of Boy Scouts as a Tenderfoot. He stammered, "Okay, you get what I mean. In fact, I think I have an idea for how to keep things... safer."

"We appreciate it, dude." I gave both Ty and Nancy a reassuring look. "We've talked about this, and as long as there are limits in place, I think we're good."

Cary smiled in tentative agreement. "It's really just making me want to get this guy all to myself, afterwards," she said, blushing a little. I wondered if she had any specific ideas.

Nancy giggled. "Oh my God, you're blushing, that's soooo cute! I can't believe you're just done with college and still so shy. You must really have something together."

"You'll like this next part, I think," Ty said. "More up your alley than the first few games. Maybe hit the restroom and meet us in the garden out back."

The bathroom sounded great--I needed to pee off some of this alcohol and get a clearer head. I left Cary and wandered past a few knots of people either chatting, laughing, or drinking. A few more of the darker nooks on the way to the bathroom had been occupied by couples making out.

Almost at the bathroom, I was shouldered aside by somebody who was clearly holding their alcohol with less success than me, and seemed about to spew. I let him go ahead and waited in the hall. As the wretched sounds of retching echoed from behind the door, another tuxedoed guy came and stood in line behind me.

"Killer party, right?" he grinned. "They've got a Japanese TurboGrafx in there! I can't believe I scored an invite."

"How do you know Ty?" I asked.

"The graduate? Never met him. Friend of a friend. My dad works for his dad, and part of the deal for having this big blowout with no parental supervision was apparently letting some of the riffraff in." He indicated himself ruefully. "How about you? Riffraff or rich kid?"

"Junior high friends from when he was held back a grade and his dad was still only sort-of rich," I answered. "We're in a bluegrass band together."

"Oh, the band! You're

inner circle,

" he replied. "Apparently he's got some super-raunchy event going on. A party within a party. Know anything about that?"

"I know he's been scarce for a bit," I demurred.

"I heard there's a power couple there that everyone wants to fuck. Some college fox and her real-life Bond." He looked wistful. "I'd give my left nut for a peek at what they're doing."

I shrugged. Miles and Carla were the most likely candidates, although I couldn't forget Nancy's remarks. It made me almost laugh aloud to think that somehow my awkward, history-nerd self and shy, reserved Cary could have been distorted and recast through the grapevine as a smoking hot power couple.

But it was probably Miles and Carla.

"Wait," I said, as the door creaked open, revealing a pallid, sweaty partygoer. "How do

you

know what's going on at his secret party within a party?"

He gestured towards the door. "You going?" I nodded and started to head in. "People talk. I heard some of the staff who are working the party talking about it. Sounds like it's all the games at this party combined and then some. Lots of people losing their clothes."

I smirked and closed the door. The unmistakable sounds of rhythmic bumping and moaning filtered through the air vents into the bathroom, making me glad that I had not tried to use the upstairs commode. As I pissed out a healthy supply of the night's beer, wine coolers, and bourbon, I felt myself coming back down to earth a bit. My showdown with Cary's ex-husband seemed a lifetime ago, despite having been only a few hours back. I wasn't tired yet, but I felt like when I crashed, I was going to crash hard. I needed some water.

"Enjoy," I said as I exited. My conversation mate nodded familiarly and entered the bathroom.

I waited for Cary where I had last seen her, but after a few minutes I assumed she had already headed out to the garden. The fresh air on the veranda was cool and reviving. While waiting, I got a clear view of the grounds behind Ty's house and sipped some ice water, which was even more reviving. I had been here for his birthday a few times, but rarely at night. The last time I had been here was for the Haunted Hedge Maze, when it had been all done up in fake cobwebs with strobe lights. In the glow of footlights along the garden paths, it looked completely different than I remembered.

Beside the lawn stood what looked like a tiny shed--almost the size of an old phone booth from when I was a kid. It had been draped with curtains, which looked like they could be pulled aside with fancy satin cords. A gleam of glass shone between the folds of the curtains. I wondered what voyeuristic purpose it would serve during the game.

A table had been set up with what looked like a small arsenal's worth of nerf guns. I felt a grin creeping onto my face; if this was anything like paintball, Cary and I were going to clean house. Of course, if Cary tried to flirt her way to winning

this

time, she might get more than she bargained for. Foks were starting to congregate down near the table, led by another staff member in a red vest. I still hadn't seen Cary. I figured she had gotten here ahead of me, but maybe she was still waiting in line for a bathroom somewhere. Girls' bathrooms always seemed to have a line.

I sauntered down the steps towards the group. Ty and Nancy were counting heads and double checking against a list. It had been ten minutes, but apparently not all of us were as good at keeping a schedule as others. I shook my head; usually

I

was the one running late. Carla walked over to me, hips nearly doing a figure-8 as she walked. If she put anymore into it, she would have been dancing.

"Hi, handsome. Where's your date?" she asked.

"Should be here any minute," I answered. "What about yours? Where's Miles?"

"You mean 'Agent Boning?' I wouldn't worry about him," she purred. "He'll be along."

"It feels good to get some air," I said, looking for something neutral to discuss.

"For you, maybe," she replied. "I'm getting a little chilly. Look at my nipples!"

Reflexively, I did. I could just barely make out their outline through the various layers of fabric. Her black sequined dress shimmered in the light of the garden lamps.

"You can have my jacket until, ah... 'Boning' gets back," I said, pulling it off. "Guys have it easier in situations like this. But fair warning, I'm giving it to Jane if she gets back before Miles."

"Deal," Carla agreed. She took my jacket and gratefully settled it around her shoulders. "What a gentleman." I couldn't tell if she was being sarcastic. She wriggled into the warmth and sighed. "I could get used to this."

"It's a rental, but I bet you could get one for a reasonable price," I joked.

She rolled her eyes. "I mean

this

. The fun. No work, no college. Letting go of inhibitions." Her gaze slid suggestively in my direction and she leaned against me. "You're a good dancer. Did you take lessons?"

I chuckled. "Yeah, actually. Just a few. My friend Sascha talked me into it. Didn't you say you know her?"

Carla's eyebrows went up. "Oh! So you're not just 'bluegrass-knife' friend, you're 'dance lessons' friend, too? Any chance you're 'winter solstice friend'?"

I flushed despite the cool air. "Uh... yeah, actually. But that was a one-time thing."

Rather than responding immediately, she grinned as if a guess had been confirmed. "Lucky for us."

I was saved from trying to make further small talk by the arrival of Cary... and Miles, who had draped his jacket over her shoulders and was guiding her with a light touch at her waist. She was walking with the careful gait of somebody who was paying attention to their footsteps. I frowned; I didn't think she had been drinking that much.

When she saw me, she waved. "Matt! I mean, 'Agent Steele!'" She giggled and partially stumbled. "It's cold outside and Miles loaned me his jacket!"

I made myself smile, despite the gnawing jealously that threatened to rise up in my chest. "You're just in time! I think we're about to start."

As they drew even with us, Carla rubbed her shoulder against me. "Looks like we have a pretty good trade going on here. Whaddya say, 'Kitty Bristol?' Wanna keep the guy that goes with the jacket for this game? Try him on for size? I saw you two dancing--you looked like you felt what he's packing."

Cary gave a slow, seductive smile that immediately made me want to tear off her clothes and drag her behind the bushes. She swirled out of Miles' jacket and tossed it to him, and half-walked, half-skipped over to me. Carla shrugged, handed me my jacket, and walked to Miles as if she were on a catwalk.

Cary slumped against me, and I grabbed her in alarm. "Are you okay?"

"Keep holding me," she whispered, sounding less drunk than before. "Those apple daiquiris were a little stronger than I thought. I'm clearer now, but I was pretty dizzy there for a moment. Miles is nice, but he

has

been getting a bit... forward. He and Tits over there are

really

on a mission."

I laughed out loud. "Did you just call her 'Tits?'

You're

the one whose agent name is Kitty Bristol.'"

Cary giggled. "Well, she's been waving them around. And they

are

nice. Like I said, half of the girls at this party could be models. It's been making me sort of competitive. And you know how I get when I'm competitive."

I kissed her lightly. I liked being able to do that. "It's one of the things I love about you."

If she could have physically lit up like a light bulb, she would have. "You are on a roll with saying the right things tonight."

The sound of Ty's raised voice got our attention and we all gathered around the table. Cary's gait was getting more certain, and she now held on to me out of affection rather than necessity. "You'll either like this or hate it!" Ty gleefully announced, "You have all been compromised, and your secret identity has been revealed! Each of you needs to survive for half an hour until you can be airlifted out." He gestured to the rows of Nerf Sharpshooters. "All the nerf darts have been dusted with tailor's chalk. If you get hit, you'll have a white mark."

Some not-so-muted grumbling arose, and Ty waved his arms. "I'll pay for your cleaning bills if it leaves a mark that doesn't just brush off. The rules are simple; shoot everybody else. You can team up if you like, but spies don't have friends--just assets. You start with ten points. You lose a point for each hit you take. Everybody loses an extra point if their confederate is tagged."

"Who are our confederates?" asked Tiff--the redhead in a green dress.

Ty held up his card. "If you found your card last round, their name is on the back. Otherwise, you'll just have to guess! It's up to you to try to keep your confederate from getting tagged!"

I took the card I had pulled from 'Donita Holnight's' dress in the dancing-groping game last round. Printed on the back was the name

Sandra Straddle

. That was Nancy, Ty's girlfriend. So I'd need to keep an eye on her and try to keep her from getting hit if I wanted to keep my points. "The staff know who you are paired up with, so they'll add or deduct points automatically," Ty continued. "The top four people with the fewest hits to them or their confederate get a bonus for the next and final round! Winners of the last round end ten minutes early."

"What's the box for?" one of the girls asked.

Ty gestured grandly at the glass curtain-draped booth. "

That

," he answered, "is the penalty box. It's how you get points back. If you see who just shot you

and

you can capture their real-life partner, the two of you can spend a minute in the booth to nullify your last shots. So it behooves you to stay hidden so that nobody can tell who shot them last. Remember, only a minute in the booth. That should keep you from getting up to

too

much trouble." He smirked. Cary squeezed my arm again and gave me an uncertain smile.

"How do you capture people?" Carla asked.

"Sneak up on them, touch them, and say '

You're captured,

'" Ty answered. "Easy-peasy. Then just walk back to the booth together with your guns in the air so that people know you're off limits. We have staff watching, so no cheating." He waggled a mock-admonishing finger at us all.

"No kissing on the mouth," Cary whispered to me as we walked towards the dart gun table. "That's just for us." I nodded my agreement.

"You can double your point recovery by spending your minute in the makeout box with the curtains closed," Ty called after us. "However, staff can choose to award you an extra point if you entertain them." I chuckled guardedly--this game was rigged to get people fondling each other's partners.

We each picked up our Nerf Sharpshooters and a small baggie of chalk-coated darts. Cary was already spinning her nerf gun around and miming shots at the other players. Some of the other girls who had been looking uncertain about things picked up on her enthusiasm and started striking Charlie's Angels poses with the nerf guns. Most of the guys were trying to pretend that they knew how to handle a handgun by looking cool and bored.

One of the staff struck a small bell with a mallet and we all dispersed into the garden paths and walkways, ready to stalk each other with chalk-coated ammunition. I grabbed Cary around the waist and surprised her with a quick kiss, which she returned. Then we split up. I could see her eyes shining with excitement as she ran into the hedge maze. Within moments the

pop

of spring-loaded Nerf guns and laughter filtered through the air. I crouched down behind the nearest low hedge and started to play. It was a lot like paintball, but with less range and more laughter. Some of us were taking it pretty seriously, and others were just having fun--mostly the people who had fallen behind in points.

I tried to keep Nancy's black hair and green dress in view, and popped a few guys and one girl before the first time I got hit. I spun and saw the surfer-looking guy ducking behind a statue and smirking. My mind raced; who was his partner? He'd been in the Two Truths and a Lie game with us, but she hadn't.

Anne

. That was her name. A pretty brunette in a pink satin dress with a confident smile. She shouldn't be too hard to find.

As luck would have it, she passed in front of me between an opening in two hedges while I was sneaking around. Just before she got out of reach, I darted my arm through the gap and touched her on the back. "You're captured," I announced.

Anne looked back and forth in confusion for a moment before spotting me. She huffed. "That should be against the rules."

I shrugged and walked warily to meet her on the other side of the wall of greenery. "Your boyfriend tagged me and I want my points back," I said.

"Good for him," she pouted. "Still, I could have done worse. You're not bad. And maybe it'll at least be warmer in the booth."

"I don't doubt that," I answered as we exited the hedge maze and got a glimpse of the booth. It was already occupied. Through a fairly generous gap in the curtains, we could see Miles and Nancy wedged into the glass case; Miles was nibbling on Nancy's ear while he ground against her from behind. One hand was twisted in her hair, and the other had slipped down the front of her green dress. I was doubly chagrined--both because I had lost a point, and because somebody was macking on my buddy's girlfriend.

Anne raised an eyebrow. "Wow. They look... pretty into it," she murmured.

After a moment, one of the red-vested staff approached and rapped once on the glass walls. Miles and Nancy exited, straightening their clothing. As Anne and I walked towards the booth, I heard Nancy say, "Mmmmn, I'm gonna ask Ty to shoot you again."

"Plenty of time later," Miles answered breezily. I couldn't figure it--Ty would be pretty pissed if he knew Nancy was encouraging this, right? Anne didn't so much as blink at the other couple's behavior.

"One minute, starting when the doors close," the staff member said. I was pretty sure he had been the dealer for the Cary's table in the card game. "Curtains or no?"

I was down two points now, so I nodded. Anne smiled. "Yes, please."

I wedged myself into one of the corners and tried not to take up too much space. Anne was pretty, but I was more interested in getting back out there and sniping some more people than messing around with another guy's girlfriend. Anne, on the other hand, turned towards me with a businesslike demeanor and breathed in deep. After a moment, she tilted her head towards me and puckered her lips.

I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her on the neck. She shivered a little, but drew back. "What, not a proper kiss? You don't like me?"

I shook my head. "It's not that. But C--Jane and I agreed no kissing on the lips."

Anne smiled. "It's really sweet that you're being so loyal. It's good to have rules. That's what makes a sex party like this work."

My jaw dropped so quickly it should have made a sound. "Sex party?"

Anne laughed. "Yeah. Did you not know?

How

could you not know? I mean, it isn't

technically

, but you two, Roy, and Stacy were the only ones not already in the club. We assumed you knew the setup. And Carla said you two play all the time. 'More often than not.'"
