In this chapter, Sonia gets introduced to Rooster's immediate family for serious explanations about her prior career, with a general meeting planned with extended family and friends. This chapter contains toys, edging, oral sex, interracial sex, and light spanking. My thanks to JohnnyGalt for editorial assistance. I Want Her to Know What Love Is, Ch 8
Telling Mom and Maya
We were back on the road by eight, stopping for breakfast rather than dirty up more dishes that would have to be cleaned. Sonia had her Lush in, enjoying the music more than she normally would. Tommy was seated behind her, playing with his new iPad.
"Why do you love my mom?" Tommy asked after breakfast, finally setting his new toy aside. "Is it because she's pretty?"
Sonia's ears pricked up. She wanted to know the answer to this one too.
"Tommy, do you want me to be honest with you?"
"Yeah."
"Don't ever fall in love with someone because of how they look."
"Why?"
"Because looks change over time as you get older. You may get fat, you'll definitely get wrinkles, you can be affected by disease or an accident. Looks are ephemeral, which means temporary. If you marry someone for looks, eventually, you'll be disappointed, because no one looks the same forever. Appearance may be why you become interested in someone in the first place, but it should never be the basis for a marriage.
"I dated other women who were pretty, but they didn't have the other things I was looking for. No, I love your mother for reasons that will last for the rest of our lives. She's kind, she cares for her family, she's capable of great love, as evidenced by how she has taken care of you and her mother, and she loves me back. Those are the reasons I love her."
"How do you know she's kind? She didn't even remember you from high school."
"Because when she could have been cruel to me, she never was. The other people in her social circle did it. Some of them were downright nasty. She never did. It would have been easy for her to do so, go along with everyone else, but she didn't."
"But she didn't stick up for you, did she?"
"Other than by not participating, no, she didn't. We talked about that after she learned who I was. Your mom was an outsider, an anomaly. She was one of only two black kids in the school, along with her brother, Jared. She felt it would be easy to be on the outside looking in, if she didn't fit in. Pushing back against the popular kids could have put her in my boat. All kids want to fit in, to be accepted. Fighting against the cool kids is a good way to be ostracized.
"So, she kept quiet instead of speaking up. I don't blame her for that. I would have done anything to fit in. If it would have helped me to fit in, I might have been one of the cruel kids. The only reason I wasn't, is because it wouldn't have made a difference. I could never fit in, no matter what I did, so I fought them instead. I'm just glad she wasn't one of the kids who tormented me. That was kind. If you want to be really brave, stick up for the unfortunate, the unhappy, the ugly, the poor, no matter what anyone else thinks. You'll find that is awfully hard to do, especially when you're a kid. But if you do that, stick up for someone who everyone else tries to beat down, you'll have a friend for life. They will never forget you. Kindness can be an act of bravery."
Sonia took my hand and squeezed it. "I'm sorry I wasn't braver."
"You did pretty good, considering. Like I said, if I fit in, I could have been like the other kids. I hope I wouldn't have, but I never had the chance to find out how brave I could have been. Believe me, it was damn tough being an outsider."
"I think I love you more now, than I've ever loved anyone, but Tommy."
"Well, shoot. That's something I love to hear. If we weren't in the car, we'd have to send Tommy to his room so we could make sweet, sweet love. Right, Tommy?"
"Right, Dad."
Sonia laughed. "You two are impossible."
"I'm just teaching him how to properly love a woman, aren't I?"
"You bet, Dad."
"I'm just imparting any wisdom I have so he knows how to treat the woman he wants to marry. That's good stuff to have, isn't it, son?"
"It sure is, Dad. Better than learning how to fish, or camp, or drive a boat, or paddle a canoe."
"Exactly, a lifelong skill, that will pay dividends forever, help him win the woman of his dreams. If that isn't useful, nothing is. Would you like me to crank the music louder, honey?"
"Only if you hold my hand."
"Done and done."
I added a couple of decibels to the music, and every time Sonia climaxed, she'd give my hand a squeeze to let me know how good she was feeling. She apparently felt great.

We stopped to eat in Duluth, stopping at a place overlooking the harbor. Sonia's Lush had died by then, so she didn't have to worry about inadvertent moans in front of Tommy or the server.
"Is this your son, sir? He's a handsome young man," our waitress, Sharlene, asked as she took our orders.
"He will be," I said. "His mom and I just got engaged. His father was a handsome fellow too, although I think he got most of his looks from his mother. Their smiles are exactly the same, and incandescent when you see them." Tommy was smiling. "See, just like that. I fell in love with that smile before falling in love with all the rest."
Sharlene laughed. "I see what you mean. It is a smile to be jealous of. Do you live around here?"
"Twin Cities," I said.
"Too bad. I was hoping to borrow him so he could light up our restaurant."
"Alas, I have to take him home with me. I've become rather fond of him."
Tommy couldn't stop grinning. He loved hearing about his inclusion in my life. Tommy got a burger and fries, Sonia and I both had entree salads, mine with chicken, hers a chef salad.
When we hit the road again, Tommy asked if I was taking him home.
"Not yet. I think you should see the new home you'll be living in first, maybe pick out a bedroom, tell me what furniture you want for it. Plus, I want to spend more time with your mother before I take you home. You've got to get ready for school, and we need to start meeting each other's families and planning a wedding. We'll figure it out."
"Good."

Tommy was suitably impressed when he saw my house. He loved the indoor pool and Entertainment room. I told him he could have any bedroom on the third floor.
"Where does Benson sleep?"
"Second floor, closer to the kitchen. It's like his own little home, with a microwave, small fridge, bathroom. Since he lives here, I want him to feel comfortable. You can leave a note on the counter in the kitchen of what you want for breakfast, and what time. I usually get up at six, and eat at seven. I run for an hour, eat, then work out some more. Your mom has been doing the same, although we've been eating at seven-thirty because she's not in as good a shape as I am, and it takes her longer to run two and a half miles."
