I Want Her to Know What Love Is, Ch 8

Telling Mom and Maya

We were back on the road by eight, stopping for breakfast rather than dirty up more dishes that would have to be cleaned. Sonia had her Lush in, enjoying the music more than she normally would. Tommy was seated behind her, playing with his new iPad.

"Why do you love my mom?" Tommy asked after breakfast, finally setting his new toy aside. "Is it because she's pretty?"

Sonia's ears pricked up. She wanted to know the answer to this one too.

"Tommy, do you want me to be honest with you?"

"Yeah."

"Don't ever fall in love with someone because of how they look."

"Why?"

"Because looks change over time as you get older. You may get fat, you'll definitely get wrinkles, you can be affected by disease or an accident. Looks are ephemeral, which means temporary. If you marry someone for looks, eventually, you'll be disappointed, because no one looks the same forever. Appearance may be why you become interested in someone in the first place, but it should never be the basis for a marriage.

"I dated other women who were pretty, but they didn't have the other things I was looking for. No, I love your mother for reasons that will last for the rest of our lives. She's kind, she cares for her family, she's capable of great love, as evidenced by how she has taken care of you and her mother, and she loves me back. Those are the reasons I love her."

"How do you know she's kind? She didn't even remember you from high school."

"Because when she could have been cruel to me, she never was. The other people in her social circle did it. Some of them were downright nasty. She never did. It would have been easy for her to do so, go along with everyone else, but she didn't."

"But she didn't stick up for you, did she?"

"Other than by not participating, no, she didn't. We talked about that after she learned who I was. Your mom was an outsider, an anomaly. She was one of only two black kids in the school, along with her brother, Jared. She felt it would be easy to be on the outside looking in, if she didn't fit in. Pushing back against the popular kids could have put her in my boat. All kids want to fit in, to be accepted. Fighting against the cool kids is a good way to be ostracized.

"So, she kept quiet instead of speaking up. I don't blame her for that. I would have done anything to fit in. If it would have helped me to fit in, I might have been one of the cruel kids. The only reason I wasn't, is because it wouldn't have made a difference. I could never fit in, no matter what I did, so I fought them instead. I'm just glad she wasn't one of the kids who tormented me. That was kind. If you want to be really brave, stick up for the unfortunate, the unhappy, the ugly, the poor, no matter what anyone else thinks. You'll find that is awfully hard to do, especially when you're a kid. But if you do that, stick up for someone who everyone else tries to beat down, you'll have a friend for life. They will never forget you. Kindness can be an act of bravery."

Sonia took my hand and squeezed it. "I'm sorry I wasn't braver."

"You did pretty good, considering. Like I said, if I fit in, I could have been like the other kids. I hope I wouldn't have, but I never had the chance to find out how brave I could have been. Believe me, it was damn tough being an outsider."

"I think I love you more now, than I've ever loved anyone, but Tommy."

"Well, shoot. That's something I love to hear. If we weren't in the car, we'd have to send Tommy to his room so we could make sweet, sweet love. Right, Tommy?"

"Right, Dad."

Sonia laughed. "You two are impossible."

"I'm just teaching him how to properly love a woman, aren't I?"

"You bet, Dad."

"I'm just imparting any wisdom I have so he knows how to treat the woman he wants to marry. That's good stuff to have, isn't it, son?"

"It sure is, Dad. Better than learning how to fish, or camp, or drive a boat, or paddle a canoe."

"Exactly, a lifelong skill, that will pay dividends forever, help him win the woman of his dreams. If that isn't useful, nothing is. Would you like me to crank the music louder, honey?"

"Only if you hold my hand."

"Done and done."

I added a couple of decibels to the music, and every time Sonia climaxed, she'd give my hand a squeeze to let me know how good she was feeling. She apparently felt great.

We stopped to eat in Duluth, stopping at a place overlooking the harbor. Sonia's Lush had died by then, so she didn't have to worry about inadvertent moans in front of Tommy or the server.

"Is this your son, sir? He's a handsome young man," our waitress, Sharlene, asked as she took our orders.

"He will be," I said. "His mom and I just got engaged. His father was a handsome fellow too, although I think he got most of his looks from his mother. Their smiles are exactly the same, and incandescent when you see them." Tommy was smiling. "See, just like that. I fell in love with that smile before falling in love with all the rest."

Sharlene laughed. "I see what you mean. It is a smile to be jealous of. Do you live around here?"

"Twin Cities," I said.

"Too bad. I was hoping to borrow him so he could light up our restaurant."

"Alas, I have to take him home with me. I've become rather fond of him."

Tommy couldn't stop grinning. He loved hearing about his inclusion in my life. Tommy got a burger and fries, Sonia and I both had entree salads, mine with chicken, hers a chef salad.

When we hit the road again, Tommy asked if I was taking him home.

"Not yet. I think you should see the new home you'll be living in first, maybe pick out a bedroom, tell me what furniture you want for it. Plus, I want to spend more time with your mother before I take you home. You've got to get ready for school, and we need to start meeting each other's families and planning a wedding. We'll figure it out."

"Good."

Tommy was suitably impressed when he saw my house. He loved the indoor pool and Entertainment room. I told him he could have any bedroom on the third floor.

"Where does Benson sleep?"

"Second floor, closer to the kitchen. It's like his own little home, with a microwave, small fridge, bathroom. Since he lives here, I want him to feel comfortable. You can leave a note on the counter in the kitchen of what you want for breakfast, and what time. I usually get up at six, and eat at seven. I run for an hour, eat, then work out some more. Your mom has been doing the same, although we've been eating at seven-thirty because she's not in as good a shape as I am, and it takes her longer to run two and a half miles."

We went up the third floor. He was immediately attracted to the kids room. "Who sleeps here?"

"My sister's kids when she visits, or any other children who my friends have when they visit. You can have this one, or another one fixed up the way you want. We'll pick out some furniture for it tomorrow, and I'll have it ready before you move in. You can sleep in this one tonight, or wherever else you want on this floor."

"I can sleep here tonight, or however long I'm staying."

"Two nights. That's fine. I'll have Benson put your suitcase in here."

"What are we having for supper?"

"Benson didn't have time to cook, so he put a grocery store lasagna in the oven when he got home. We'll have that, plus greens. He stopped for some food when he got to town."

"Is Mom sleeping with you?"

"Just like the cabin. Let's get your iPad signed into my wifi system. I've got a large selection of movies and stuff in the entertainment room. Everything has the same passwords as you used up at my cabin."

"Did she have sex with you right away?"

"No, she slept in the guest room on the fourth floor, and we didn't have sex until after four dates. She wouldn't even kiss me until after two dates."

"So my mom wasn't easy?"

"What do you know about women being easy? You're seven."

"Some of the kids say if you have sex right away, you're easy and a slut."

"Your mom is no slut. I had to beg her to kiss me." She did give me a hand job before she kissed me, but I'd paid for that. Tommy didn't need to know THAT. "Supper's in an hour. You might want to shower first. That's what I'm going to do."

"With Mom?"

"If I'm lucky."

Tommy grinned.

I found Sonia in my bedroom, lying naked and spread legged on my bed. Her clothes were in a heap on the floor, the Lush lying juicy on the top of them.

"I need you, Rooster. God, I need you."

"You and I think alike, baby, because I need you too. Every time you climaxed in the car, my dick got harder." I was stripping off my clothes as fast as I could.

"Fuck me, lover. Fuck me good."

I got over the top of her and she helped aim my cock at her soppy hole. I slid right in, planted my lips on hers and fucked her hard. I didn't last long the first time, because I hadn't fucked her since last night, but the second time was better. Way better. We still had time to shower before supper. The last time before going to sleep was the best one of all.

Sonia got up with me when I ran. She was doing better and better. The exercise, hiking and paddling up north had done some good. It was close to two miles before she had to slow down. We couldn't do our weights and swimming naked because Tommy was there and wanted to use the pool. We did it anyway, but not naked.

After the exercise, I called work and laid out my idea for a vacation app. They thought it was a good idea with some promise, and they got started on it right away. I called my Mom and sister and arranged for a private meeting with them tomorrow evening at my house. No Tommy, no husband. Mom could spend the night rather than drive back to Waverly. Maya lived close enough to go home.

Tommy and I went through furniture websites, looking for the bed, desk and furniture he wanted in his room. He didn't pick the current kids room as his, saying he'd leave that one for any other kids. The room he picked out was large enough for two beds, but he got a bunk bed with a double size mattress on the bottom and a twin size on top, that would sleep three kids if he had some over. That left him with plenty of room for his desk, and an air hockey table. I got him his own TV.

"Here's the rules about living here, buddy. I have a cleaning company come in every Wednesday, so you don't have to do a deep clean on your room. But I do expect you to keep it picked up, clothes and toys off the floor. I'm buying you good stuff, so I expect you to take care of it. If you break it, I'll buy cheap stuff the next time, or won't replace it at all. You don't need an air hockey table. That's an extra. The desk I'll replace, but it will be a cheap piece of crap because you didn't take care of the first one.

"You put your dirty dishes in the sink. Benson will ensure they get washed, but don't leave them all over the house for him to find. It's no hardship to stick them in the sink. Same with the rest of your stuff. Don't leave it lying around the house for him to pick up, or you'll end up having to help him clean up. You're extra work for him. Don't make it a lot of extra work. You're welcome to invite your friends over once you move in, but they follow the same rules, or they won't be invited again. I expect you to do your homework first thing when you get home except for special circumstances, such as friends coming home with you, but if they come on a week night, they leave by eight so you can get your homework done at a reasonable hour.

"The best thing you can do for your future self, is study hard so you can make something of yourself. I'm not going to support you for the rest of your life. I'm not doing my job as a father if you turn into a lazy leech. Your ability to show responsibility towards yourself and the others living in the house, is the measure I'll use to determine what kinds of things we do together. If you don't show responsibility, you and I will work together. If you do, we'll do fun things together, like ball games, amusement parks and nice vacations. You determine your life and your future, whether it's with me, or after you graduate. Do we have a deal?"

"Deal."

Sonia and I retired early after supper, with me wanting to spend as much time with her as possible before she went home to her other duties as mother and daughter. I'd only have her one more night, after our conversation with Mom and Maya. I could see she was nervous about that conversation. I was a little, but not overly so. I trusted them to see the same things about her that I did.

Sonia was just as needy as I was, needing each other in the worst way. I hoped I'd always feel this way with her, like I couldn't get enough of her. I think she felt the same way. She had the ring and it hadn't slowed her down at all. She was as eager to jump my bones as I was hers. Every time we finished, we spent time just kissing each other, our sweaty bodies entwined in love knots.

"Reality is about to intrude on our world," I said. "I'm bringing Tommy back tomorrow and we have to tell Mom and Maya about where I found you. That's not something I want them to learn by accident later."

"I concur. I'm going to hate it, but I agree. I worried about your reaction to my former clients approaching me in your presence. Having them do it with your Mom or sister around would be worse."

"It's here, so the surroundings will be familiar. I trust them to behave like Benson did. We'll give them a little time to get to know you before we spill. We'll have a nice meal first, some wine."

"Do you think Benson should be there? Some kind of buffer?"

"I don't think it's necessary, but I'll tell them Benson has been around you a lot, so would have a good understanding of you as someone suitable as a friend, or wife. If they want to ask him, they can."

"What should I wear?"

"Jeans and a blouse. We'll be casual, nothing formal. I say we just let the information come out organically, as part of the conversation. We don't announce it, but if they ask what you've been doing, we'll be honest."

"Okay. Good. I can live with that."

"I want to start paying for Tommy's stuff. I'd like to give you whatever you think you need to get him ready for school. I can leave it with Ann, so she can get started, or give it to you, whatever you think is best. Will a thousand be enough."

"Five hundred would be enough. I had to be thrifty."

"You don't have to be thrifty anymore. Let's make it a thousand. Does he need a computer for school?"

"Not for third grade. The iPad is more than sufficient for things he might need a device for."

"Should I give him a phone. I'd like him to be able to contact me if he needs to get hold of me."

"I think he should be ten before he gets a phone. He can call from his iPad, can't he?"

"He can. It's on my wireless plan."

"That should be sufficient. I don't want him carrying a phone around and be on it all the time. Most of the other kids he'll be going to school with won't have a phone."

"Church wedding or Justice of the Peace."

"I don't want a big wedding. Maybe fifty guests tops, some friends and family. A justice or minister, but maybe not in the church, small reception at a Lion's Club or something. Don't go overboard."

"Do you have some hooker friends you want to invite?"

"You'd let me invite hookers? Are you a glutton for punishment?"

"No, it's just you quit having contact with the Waverly crowd. You must have some friends. Someone who knew what you did and didn't give a crap. Who do you want as bridesmaids. You need at least one."

"Who will be your best man?"

"A guy from the Unit, named Alex."

"Am I going to meet some of your friends before we get hitched, so they can tell you what a mistake you're making?"

"They don't have to know about your career."

"Doc knows."

"He won't say anything."

"Any other guys?"

"They'd all be from the Unit, except one guy at my company who I'm close to. How many I have depends on the number of bridesmaids you want."

"Let's say two."

"Then Alex and Jeremiah, another guy from the Unit."

"What are their nicknames, Rooster?"

"Alex is Berserker and Jeremiah is Preacher."

"Can Preacher perform weddings?"

"Not to my knowledge."

"How did he get the nickname, Preacher."

"He tended to give sermons. He was a little long winded, but he gave good advice."

"Berserker won't tear up the house or reception, will he?"

"No, he got the nickname in battle. He's pretty quiet generally. Even when the other guys were cutting loose, he was quiet. Still waters run deep with him."

"Are either of them married?"

"Alex was. Military life is hard on wives, especially with long deployments. She left him for an accountant, a real steady Eddie. I think Alex plans on getting out at the end of his next enlistment, around six months as I recall."

"Do we have to plan the time of our wedding around them?"

"If we want them to attend, yes. Something could crop up. It frequently does, so I'll have a standby or two."

"How wild will the bachelor party be?"

"No wilder than any other group of guys who need to cut loose a little?"

"Should I expect hookers?"

"Can you recommend anyone?" I laughed.

"Seriously?"

"No. Strippers, probably. Hookers unlikely. By the way, the question about girls you'd experimented with in high school I originally asked; was it anyone I knew?"

"Do you want to see us together?"

"Just curious. I wanted to ask in the worst way when you mentioned it, but didn't want to give away I'd know them too."

She smiled. "Drew and Sandy. Drew was really into girls. I think she still is, though I can't say for certain. Sandy was more experimenting, like I was. I don't know which way she headed after high school."

"If you're giving up your old career, do you want to get back in touch with any of your old crew?"

"Probably. If I didn't have to talk about what I did for a living."

"Public Relations. You had relations with the public. Don't get more involved than that."

"Is that why you picked that? I had relations with the public?" Sonia laughed.

"It was true, without being true. Let's call it a half truth. It satisfied Tommy."

She smiled. "I guess it was a half truth, leaving off the sex part."

"The nice thing is, 'relations' can be just about anything. It's very non-specific that way. I could have gone with sales, as you were selling yourself, but most people think sales people are pushy, so PR seemed more generic."

She kissed me. "God, I love you."

"Then fuck me again."

She did.

******

Sonia went with us when I dropped Tommy back off at his house after lunch, bringing back her clothes except what she needed tonight and tomorrow. I explained to Tommy that I needed Sonia to meet my family first, before they met him.

"We'll have a family get together next Saturday," I said, "and you can meet everyone then. This is just the adults. My sister, Maya, graduated the year your Mom came to Waverly High, so I don't know how much contact they had."

"Will they be upset she has a son?"

"No. If you get married as old as I am, a lot of people might have kids from before. That shouldn't be an issue for anyone. Plus, there's wedding stuff that might need to be discussed, which would just be boring for you."
