Wednesday morning might have eased gently into the world offering streaks of thunder gray clouds with golden fringe on the horizon like horizontal curtains on the stage of the sun, dark gray specks of flocks with opposite destinations in the near and distance easing across the sky and the faint hum of morning understood only to those deeply sensitive to the universe fade in all of morning's glory, but I couldn't have known of such splendor.

When I woke my sense of touch assured me I was caressing tenderness and my sense of smell reminded me the tenderness was Cindy's scent. My first inclination was to politely ask the hand cupping her left breast to leave it in solitude that I might persuade it to help me position her beautiful body so my lips might freely rest against her soft buttocks before my erection entered her. Instead I asked forgiveness for both our sins as Cindy slept in my embrace. When Cindy's eyes did open I felt her sense of sight told her she was peering into mine and her sense of taste assured her, adulterer's lips were kissing for the very first time.

Cindy's soft pink nipples were erect invitations but we silently rose from the plane of our passion and we covered our bodies as sinners, but somehow we knew our lives would be divided if we allowed endurance of shame. Cindy simply departed without a word transforming that day into solitude coupled with inner searching even though I felt what we engaged was truly an act of love.

My guilt weighed heavy for coveting another man's wife, but adultery with Cindy, in my mind, was the sin I couldn't resist. I wondered that day if Cindy felt unclean for straying from the vows of marriage but thoroughly cleansed when her prayers were answered with my surrender. After all, I surmised, we were only humans driven by emotional and physical attraction and I felt all we needed was time and understanding of what drew us together with prayer to calm the clutter.

There were special times in my early life I sat Indian style on the floor of my father's home and listened to a wise old man tell tales to two little girls full of wonder and we listened to every last word. I now trust my heart and offer the teller tell the tale of my next few days with a beautiful platinum blonde lover who became the core of my being, that gentle herder and how her prayers had drawn us together and changed my life from that day I first saw her.

On Thursday the two adulterers were not secluded by any means, nor were they in each other's company. It rained hard all day nurturing the earth while granting time to decipher their emotions. By Friday's sunrise, they understood a civil resolution was needed concerning what happened on Tuesday, but they had proven to each other, neither wished to be the one making the first move allowing innocent inexperience to force both to remain in solitude praying for the release of the other.

In the early morning of the second day after his surrender, Danny became overwhelmed with emptiness and knew exactly where to begin the necessary journey. Once again Danny took control and followed yet another path, for a completely sane reason. Danny would offer Cindy something she desperately needed, the truth about him.

Danny rose from his bed then showered, shaved and did his best to ready himself to be the arbiter of truth. Since Cindy had left in silence two days before he was convinced she may have shielded her guilt as had he, and she needed to be coaxed to shed the veil then consume the world for what it was as well as what it could be.

The path to Cindy's apartment was only a part of Danny's atlas, but the journey to Cindy's heart was the center of his focus. The only door separating Danny from Cindy was indeed the unknown they had placed between them, and Danny knew they simply needed to open the door together by offering words needing to be spoken and hopefully understood.

The morning sunlight struck uncanny insight to all around him and Danny took the time to inhale the fragrances of life. He had known the beckoning power of the scent of earth's soil since childhood and as a man he discovered the power of the fragrance of a woman but when he opened Cindy's gate his nostrils were stricken by the faint aroma of the dainty white flower of a plant he knew little of before he met Cindy, but he never took the time to honor the tiny flowers offered by the plants Cindy loved.

He was unfamiliar with the air purifying abilities of the humble perennial herb, but suddenly he felt a tug then stopped walking toward Cindy's front door and looked down. One of the plants offered a single long stalk with a cluster of small white buds and a single six pedal blossom near the tip with dainty yellow anthers at the end of the each stamen. Danny took the time on his journey to announce to a woman his love through truth to kneel before the regal little plant to listen to what it had to say.

Danny couldn't have known Cindy had stood on and off in her living area gazing into the distance through the window glass facing the street for nearly two days, but he never looked into the darkness of the window to see her standing in the darkness peering into darkness waiting for Danny to appear that day.

She was relieved when Danny suddenly did appear on the stone path to her door and she stepped to the glass for a closer look at what was happening before her. Her heart began beating in her chest and as the vision sent a strong shrill through her soul she raised one arm to wrap her abdomen and grip her waist while the other she raised to palm her lips. Her breath suddenly suspended as she watched the man she had prayed to be part of her life nearly half her life, kneel before a small plant, gently lift the end of the single stalk and inhale the faint aroma of the tiny white flower of a spider plant, like a curious little boy. She was so overcome by the vision she lost her breath as she whispered in her palm, "Oh God, thank you so much."

Cindy's heart began to pound harder when Danny stood erect, while looking down at the tiny plant not bidding farewell instead, saying, 'thank you little guys,' but when his head faced forward, Cindy stepped to the shelter of the door partially to hide from Danny's vision and partially to open the door for the man she loved to enter her life again. When the door was opened she looked at Danny then dropped the hand cupping her mouth not to speak but to ensure the door remained ajar for him to enter for the first time. As she stood silently waiting for Danny to be directly in front of her she felt an internal warm fill her. When he was close enough to touch her, Danny stopped, looked into her sky blue eyes and said softy, "Cindy? ... We need to talk."

Cindy backed up slightly pulling the urge to embrace and kiss the man with her then offered Danny entrance. When he was inside, she closed the door and when it clicked shut she nearly reached out to touch his hand but hesitated and said softly, "Where?"

Danny looked at the only place to sit in Cindy's living area and it appeared as safe a place as any to say what needed to be said. He inhaled then exhaled and said softly, "Sofa is fine."

Danny's heart began to pound hard in his chest for two reasons. He was scared to death of how Cindy would react to what he was about to say, and she appeared so irresistible to him in her white panties and t-shirt he wanted to remove what little clothes she was wearing and complete what they had begun two days before, even if it meant they had to use the hard floor beneath them to fornicate until exhausted.

After Danny recaptured his purpose he sat on the edge of the cushion and Cindy quickly sat next to him anticipating purity would soon be revealed. She wanted so badly to lay her hands on him she began shivering inside, but she folded her hands on her lap, looked into his eyes and asked softly, "What is it Danny?"

Danny took a deep breath, exhaled then asked God to take a seat so he could speak from his heart, this time. "I am so in love with you, it hurts and I can't take this guilt anymore ... I'm legally separated and the divorce is not final ... you're married and, legally so am I," then he waited as his heart beat up his body and soul for any response from the preciousness before him.

Cindy deeply exhaled for the first time since Danny sat before her then she inhaled and then exhaled catching her breath and said sweetly with her right palm covering her mouth, "Oh, thank God, I thought you were going to tell me you were leaving, I never dreamed you were married."

Danny looked down at Cindy's left hand before she said another word then slipped his massive fingers under her cold dainty hand and said softly, "You're cold and you're not wearing your ring, you always wear your ring." Then he looked up into Cindy's eyes and waited for her explanation.

Cindy's gaze into Danny's eyes became focused on his soul as she spoke in a near whisper trying to convey to Danny her message was stronger then any words she could speak to describe the message itself, "I am legally married Danny, but not to a husband ... and Danny? ... I know it's only been one day but it has been the worst day of my life ... I can't stand being without you, I totally love you."

At times, silence can be deadly, but not this time. After a longer pause than a few moments Danny finally looked down again at Cindy's hand and said softly, "Your hands are dainty and so soft, it's hard to believe you work the soil of the earth ... my grandmother once told me when a farmer's wife has soft hands it means the earth rewards her because she loves him."

"Danny, I don't love him and never have." Pleaded Cindy believing Danny was speaking about her husband.

Danny exhaled then looked into Cindy's eyes, "I committed adultery and I want you ... that's two commandments shattered at once ... the seventh and the tenth ... I never in my life ever dreamed I would be stealing from another man ... especially his beautiful wife ... then seduce her in spite of myself desperately trying to stop it ... how do I rid that guilt?"

Cindy placed her right hand gently against Danny's left cheek, smiled a little then said as her eyes began to water, "I'm not letting you take all the blame ... it was me who prayed to have you in my life and it was me who asked the question in the first place ... I don't feel shameful for what we did Danny I simply felt it was me who led you astray and what hurts me more, I never intended to hurt you."

Danny raised Cindy's left hand close to his lips and whispered, "What are we going to do?" then he gently kissed the back of her soft hand.

With her straightforward way of seeing things Cindy held on to her composure. She shrugged her shoulders and said with confidence, "Well ... first off, I won't be able to afford this place when I tell David I want to be free to be with the man I've prayed for since I was ten and I want a divorce ... second, I need to actually partition for divorce and I don't even know where to begin doing that ... third, I have to get a job to feed myself but all I know how to do is grow plants, well, at least, spider plants, they're kind of easy ... fourth ... you can stop me at any time, Danny, I feel I'm losing you."

"Stop," said Danny as he slowly lowered Cindy's hand to her knee and gently wiped a tear from her cheek with his finger, "you're not losing me Cindy, you said something and it just dawned on me ... you told me you prayed to have me in your life, I believe you ... I also recall you asked if I wanted to make it with you ... you were asking if I wanted to make a life with you, weren't you?"

Cindy felt a sudden fear enter her and she wasn't sure how to answer, but she did know what she had asked of Danny and she thought it a clear enough question he could figure it out. She bit her lip then gazed into his eyes then said, "Yes Danny, I did, I want you in my life, and make love to you as much as you'll let me ... that night I played with you under the table I felt so complete then after we left Carol's you have no idea how badly I wanted you inside me ... but I was so drunk when I tripped on the step and you stopped me from falling I called you my husband's name ... God I felt like such an asshole ... I felt so bad I cried myself to sleep ... I had to see you the next day, and when you said, how about Tuesday, I felt so relieved I nearly jumped on you in front of that, that big brick thing, um the cooking pit ... well, Tuesday just happened because, well, it happen ... and I'm glad it did ... but you were so perfect in everything you did with me I got really scared Danny ... nothing has ever been that beautiful to me ... I am so sorry if I misled you ... God I need a box of tissues, I'm a mess."

"Here," said Danny softly, try this instead."

Danny began to feel Tuesday was a result of misunderstanding, but at the same time a welcomed departure from their solitude, loneliness and pent up sexual frustration as he gently wiped the tears from Cindy's face with gentle kisses on her cheeks.

"Oh God, you're making it so easy to love you," whispered Cindy as he placed her hand on his chest.

Danny had to come to grips with the path before them and decided the only way to unravel the twisted cloth they had woven was to untangle the knotted threads one at a time in order to reveal the love hiding inside the resulting blanket of gilt.

"Cindy ... let me start from the beginning then we can move forward ... I really need to rid myself of this guilt," said Danny calmly as he wiped the remaining moisture for Cindy's face with his fingers.

Cindy sat erect feeling Danny was about to offer something to untangle the mess she felt she had created, trusting him completely, she could only say, "okay."

Danny gently held Cindy's hand then said, "Any day now I'm going to receive a document in the mail granting me permission to continue on with my life from an individual who has no business even being involved in my life in the first place." Danny paused, Cindy nodded quickly then Danny continued. "You're going to be asking to receive permission to move on with your life from an individual who has no business being involved in your life in the first place." Danny paused again, Cindy nodded quickly and Danny again continued. "An individual exists who has no idea someone is about to make a decision about their life in order for that individual to continue their life without a person who should have never been involved in their life in the first place." Danny paused, Cindy nodded then Danny continued once again. "Lastly, two individuals are moving forward with their lives together from this day forward, and in spite of our sins, our life will happen, kind of like, manifest destiny ... does any of this make sense, Cindy?"

Cindy smiled, shook her head and said coyly, "No."

Danny giggled then smiled and said softly, "I have a few dollars until tomorrow, wanna share a burger at the drive-in from hell down the street and talk more about our future?"

Cindy nodded her head vigorously and with renewed energy she said, "God yes ... yes I do."

The two embraced and silently held each other as if time didn't matter until Cindy spoke softly in Danny's ear, "I'm feeling something down there and if we keep this up I'll be doing very naughty things to you on the floor ... I have to fix my makeup and change my panties and put more clothes on or we'll never make it out the door."

A half hour later, Danny was driving down the street in his rust bucket four door Impala and for the first time, the woman he loved was close to his right holding his bicep tightly. Cindy peered out the windows then suddenly said while watching the trees go by," I was a child the last time I traveled down this road."

Danny placed his hand on Cindy's thigh and gently squeezed the softness then asked, "This road?"

Cindy rested her head against Danny's right shoulder and placed one hand over his hand on her thigh and said softly, "No ... the road to wonder."

Danny had no words to offer.

Shortly after Danny found a parking spot under the canopy of Jake's Pampered Burger, a highly energized pretty teen girl with long auburn hair and a slender body approached, bent over to look at Cindy and Danny inside the car then said with a high pitched cheerful voice while holding her hair to one side, "Hi guys ... I'm Bethany, welcome to Jake's ... what can I get you guys?"

Without jotting anything down the girl took their order then spun on her heels while saying cheerfully, "Be right back with your order."

Danny looked at Cindy with raised eyebrows and said while shrugging his shoulders with a slight giggle, "How can she remember all that without writing anything down?"

Cindy giggled a little then to Danny's surprise she repeated the order then added, "Waitresses do it so often it's natural."

Danny looked at Cindy with a perplexed gaze and Cindy wanted to hug him so badly she was quivering inside frightened he'd ask her not to touch him in public and Danny was aching inside because he wanted to hold Cindy even though they were in public. They sat silent for a few moments then began talking at the same time.

"I'm sorry Cindy, you first," said Danny as he twisted his body slightly toward Cindy.

I'm sorry Danny, no, you go first," said Cindy as she felt Danny's knee touch her knee."

"Ok ... here goes," started Danny, "I understand you won't be able to afford your place once you break the news ... the problem is you must have hundreds of plants in the ground in that yard, if you try transplanting them, most won't make it ... I know you'd never leave them there, they represent your love of them ... I barely make enough money to pay the rent on my place and what little is left, to feed myself ... I don't think it's a good idea we live together ... we'll never leave each other alone ... but I can see the benefit of the latter even if it means they find us embraced and starved to death on a messy bed ... honestly Cindy? ... I have no clue, what to do next."

As Cindy began to offer a suggestion her concentration was broken when the waitress suddenly appeared behind Danny and said with her cheerful voice, "Ok guys, here it is, one half pound medium pampered burger on a toasted Jake's bun, onion, tomato, lettuce and mayo, with jack cheese, one home fry, one small Orange Crush and one large Pepsi ... that's three fifty, oh and here's the extra Jake's ketchup ... wanna roll your window up a bit for me?"

After the waitress took Danny's five-dollar bill, and told her to keep the change, she opened the pouch at her waist, stuffed the bill inside and said with an obviously over excited voice as she bounced on her toes, "All right ... thanks guys, awesome ... just beep your horn when you're done, I'll come get the stuff," then she vanished from their space like a bumble bee in search of more pollen.

Danny looked at the pile of food, then at Cindy and said in a near whisper, "I still don't get how they can do that."

After opening the wrapping on the burger and positioning the greasy paper in an attempt to eat something with little concern for etiquette Danny held the burger up for Cindy to take the first bite. Before she began chewing she watched Danny take a bite next to the missing section of whatever it was between the buns. They chewed, swallowed then giggled. Danny couldn't help himself and said as he placed the greasy mess on the paper plate in his lap. "This is the still the worst burger I've ever eaten ... the salt could choke a cow, and cows need salt ... for certain, let's say nutritional reasons, which ... we can ... um, well, discuss later."

Cindy had to giggle at the man before her with burger grease on his chin. She began to think, how God could know he was exactly what she had prayed for even in the simplest ways.
