When I was a kid I used to watch The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin on black and white TV. It starred child actor Lee Aaker as Rusty, a boy orphaned in an Indian raid, who was being raised by the soldiers at a US Cavalry post known as Fort Apache. He and his German shepherd dog, Rin Tin Tin, helped the soldiers establish order in the American West. Rusty and Rin Tin Tin always saved the day.
I wish I could be like that and I wanted a dog like that. A best friend. A dog who could protect me and save me and give me company. I begged and begged and begged and finally my Dad relented, well almost, but not quite. I wanted a male German shepherd dog, just like Rin Tin Tin. My father brought home a mutt, a dog mixed with German shepherd and Collie and to make matters worse, instead of a male I got a female.
That was how my Dad operated. You asked for one thing and you got something else, pretty close to what you wanted but it was only "roughly right" kind of like a "bait and switch" at times. But I wanted a puppy so bad that this puppy was close enough and I couldn't wait to play with her each and every day. Thanks Dad!
When we put the puppy in the basement I couldn't understand why my dad was laying down old newspaper. I asked him about it and he said the newspaper was for the puppy's pee and poop. Huh? I said. Rin Tin Tin never peed and pooped on TV. He was always frisky and friendly. Why did my puppy do that? This may sound naΓ―ve and trivial now, but at the time I really didn't know anything about the pee and the poop! And when my father said I had to walk the dog, I had no clue what he was talking about and why I needed to go out in the cold twice a day to walk the dog. LOL
