01 - Career Change
After working designing superyachts for over two years, this was the first time that I actually got to meet a client. As part of the development process, this client wanted us to meet his staff to help ensure that what we were designing included all the things his personal staff needed in order to carry out their jobs whilst onboard the boat. Unlike previous projects where we simply got given details from the relevant staff, I was sent out to talk to them and now at the end of the week, I had been alerted by his personal assistant that he wished to go through some things with me.
Now here I was, waiting nervously outside the office of a multibillionaire with no clue why he would want to meet me. He had my boss's details so could easily arrange a meeting with him should he so desire. Whilst I waited outside, all I could do was rock from one foot to the other as my mind tried to come up with reasons that I was meeting this man. All whilst the PA, who looked like they could be a model, watched me and did a poor job at suppressing an amused smile.
"He says go in." His PA tells me from her desk. I stop my rocking and nervously open the door.
"Good afternoon, Joey. It is nice to meet you at last." He says as I walk in. Although he speaks slow and meaningfully, his voice has a certain welcoming tone to it. He stands up and walks around the desk to shake my hand.
"It is nice to meet you too, Sir." I reply, not quite knowing how I should refer to him, more preoccupied focusing on keeping eye contact rather than staring at my feet. As I shake his hand, I can't help but feel like an ant. Not only was this guy incredibly rich and powerful, he was also about 6'3, broad shouldered and looked muscly enough that he could probably pick me up and throw me across the room single-handedly.
"I was wondering if I could propose an idea to you, please take a seat." He said as he headed back around his desk to retake his seat. I couldn't help but smile to myself as I sat down, unsurprisingly, this man spoke as though his desires are simply what is going to happen. Despite the formidable impression he gave, his voice and eyes both seemed genuinely friendly.
"My daughter has difficulty finding staff that are both intelligent, hard working and willing to be house staff. Although when I say house staff, their duties range from being cleaners to helping her manage her investments." He continued. "From what my staff have been able to gather, you fit those boxes and they guess that you are likely highly underpaid in your current job role. What would you say if I wanted you to hand in your notice and work for my daughter immediately?"
I didn't know how to respond. Like most young people in this day in age, I could barely afford rent and it would be years before I could actually own my own house. However, this man lived in a desert, and I am a red head. I couldn't afford to go outside while the sun is up as there is no sunscreen strong enough to stop me getting sunburned in more than 10 minutes. I also enjoy my job and am not sure I would have much of a career if it came with a pay rise in the short term.
"You wouldn't be a cleaner, just putting it out there. She currently is quite short staffed, so my current plan is to get her three new staff. Your role will be to support her business undertakings and you'll have two others who will work beneath you to help." He stated, answering my question without me even having to ask it. In this case, I would likely have decent job prospects once I can't stand the desert and, in the meantime, would even get two people reporting to me, that would be pretty cool as I am only twenty five.
"I am interested, although I wouldn't be able to start immediately as I need to give a month's notice for my current job. Am I correct in assuming that you daughter lives here?" I finally respond. Hopefully not blowing my chances as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
"I will sort your ending with your current job and yes and no. Not in this building, she has her own place on the outskirts of the city. There is lots of shade so a European like you is able to go outside for some fresh air without being cooked alive. That said, I think she mentioned moving abroad although I couldn't tell you where that may be." He said with a chuckle. I was quite surprised, not only with the job offer but also at how normal and casual this guy is despite being a billionaire who didn't really interact with normal people very often.
"My PA will update you tomorrow with the plan. And it was a pleasure to meet you." He said, bringing this brief meeting to a close.
"It was nice to meet you too, thank you very much for this opportunity." I reply before I head out of his office. Once I had closed the door, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. That had been very stressful but not in any of the ways I had gone through in my head before I had gone in. Was I really going to work out in a desert and if he was going to call my boss now, did that mean I wouldn't actually have my job tomorrow even if I changed my mind. What on Earth had I just done.
"I look forward to seeing you again. You made the right choice." His PA said with a wink as I walked back past her desk. I headed back to the room I was staying in, which although was still in his building, it was almost a ten minute journey to get to. That night I got very little sleep as my mind kept playing back both the meeting and then the PA's actions. I was awake with my mind once again spiralling at 6am when there was a light knock at my door. I got up, put my dressing gown on and opened the door to a tall and elegant middle eastern woman in a tight red dress holding a grey folder.
"Hello, I am Kat, I have been assigned to help you today. My boss has arranged for you to join his daughter's company from today, please get ready and read through these. I'll be back in an hour." The woman said whilst handing me the folder. Before I could respond, she had turned on her heels and started walking away. Due to lack of sleep and the impressive sight in front of me, I continued to stand there frozen in place for a couple of seconds. Eventually returning back to reality, I dragged my eye's away from the swaying backside and returned to my room. After quickly showering and getting dressed, I headed through to the small dining room that connected to my room and sat eating breakfast whilst I went through the folder.
