Chapter 10 -- They're Back
A few days later, it's a quiet Wednesday night. Tina and I are watching a movie on TV.
There is a knock on my door, Kathy shouts, "Steve, it's just me. Let me in."
She has a key. Why is she yelling to be let in? This isn't a night we work out. Something is wrong.
I whisper to Tina, "Get in the closet, call 911 now."
I yell back, "One second, I need to put on some pants."
Tina is immediately in tears but follows my directions perfectly.
I put on my bulletproof jacket, I wait a minute as Tina explains the issue to the police, then I yell, "Coming!"
I unlatch the chain and open the door.
Immediately, they push Kathy into me, and a large knife is following close behind her aimed straight at my chest. Three other guys are behind him with blades, one guy behind all of them, and he has a handgun. I am expecting this. Like they taught me in football, I use the swim method. I use my right hand to push the guy in the side, he is against the door frame. My other hand goes over Kathy's head and comes down hard on the guy's wrist, making him drop the knife. My arm follows through and pushes Kathy behind me and into my apartment.
My right-hand quickly withdraws and then punches the first guy with 150% (adrenaline rush) strength into his ribs. I hear a sick cracking sound from the man. He falls to the ground, unable to continue the fight. The second guy lunges at me. My left hand comes up and knocks his arm harmlessly to the side. After reaching back with my right hand, the second guy gets a face full of fist followed by a quick jab to his windpipe. He goes down. Two guys come at me now. I step into the hallway where I use a roundhouse kick to take the one on the right out, he goes to his knees. The one on the left gets a punch to his wrist, making him drop the knife. He looks at me with fear.
I surprise the heck out of him by picking him up and holding him tight to me. He is now a human shield I use against the guy with the gun. As I step by the guy on his knees, a second kick to the side of the head knocks him out. I am now running at the gunman. He raises his gun to shoot. His only target is his friend. He smartly never pulls the trigger. The combined weight of the guy held as a shield, and I slam into the guy holding the gun.
I hear an oooof, his head hits the steel door of the elevator, both men slowly crumble to the floor. I kick the gun aside. I am ready to hit someone else. My adrenaline is pumping, I have a surge of energy, I am breathing hard. At that moment, the elevator doors open, and two police officers appear with guns drawn. They are pointing their guns at me.
I fall to my hands and knees; my body gave out.
Kathy comes running at me and is yelling at the police, "What did you do to him? He lives here. Why is he bleeding so much?"
Quickly, via radio, they ask the paramedics to come up. Kathy embraces me, I fall on my side.
I say between breaths, "Tina is in the bedroom closet, once they are all restrained, have her come out. One of these is her soon to be ex-husband. The first guy has broken ribs, the next guy may be dead, next has a smashed face and ribs. The other two ran into the elevator door at a high rate of speed. They buffered my fall. The second guy I think stabbed my foot."
They call for more help. The attackers had beaten Kathy; the paramedics examine Kathy and treat her. We don't have life-threatening wounds, they move on to the attackers. None of them are complaining, they are all passed out.
Tina comes running out and at full speed and jumps into my arms with a huge hug. Tina is crying hysterically even though I am the one that is bleeding. She can see the bandage and the blood on the floor. The security guy took a beating and is already on his way to the hospital. He triggered the silent alarm before they got him. That's why the cops are here so quick.
They put me on a stretcher and take me to the hospital. I get several stitches and an Rx for antibiotics. They take my statement at the hospital. The bodies and security video confirm my story, the questioning goes quickly. I am home before the police finish with my sisters. They suspected that Kathy helped them, but there is no evidence of that.
I explain that I killed a guy, I hurt the others, Tina and Abby saw nothing. They kidnapped Kathy to gain entry. It really is that simple, these guys aren't a smart bunch. I press charges, I will follow through at trial. Kathy has endured enough, leave her alone. They go.
I make a phone call to my lawyer. Make a few suggestions, and then my attention is on my sisters. I walk past them and go straight into the kitchen. They look stunned. They follow me and sit at the kitchen table. I pull out milk, chocolate syrup, and mint chip ice cream. Each gets a glass and a long spoon. I make three full servings of chocolate mint chip ice cream shakes. That translates into four glasses worth of milkshakes and three happy sisters. Now we can talk.
I start with, "I don't want to talk about it. One of the perpetrators is dead because of me. Two others, a brother and a cousin, are in the hospital for a while, and I am responsible for their injuries. A cousin is currently in jail. Each of the survivors may spend several years in prison for their crimes.
"Your ex-husband John can't get bail, he broke probation and the restraining order. Tomorrow I'll do a press conference at the gym because I don't want to show where we live. Tonight, that was their shot, and they failed. They won't come back any time soon. You can all resume your lives now."
Abby is defiant, "What if we don't want to? I like spending my weekends with my family. I like working out and taking self-defense. I'm not ready to stop now."
Kathy adds, "I think you'll find Tina and I feel the same way. We like spending time with you, it's the highlight of our week."
Defeated, I add, "OK, after we finish, let's go to bed. We had a stressful night, and I think a good night of sleep is in order. At 10:00 AM I have a press conference. If you come with, bring sunglasses."
Chapter 11 -- Night of Fun
I get a kiss from all three as they file into the bedroom, get comfortable, and then turn off the lights. I set the chain lock, padlock, check the window locks, turn off the lights, strip naked, and sneak into my bedroom. I am ninja quiet.
That wasn't good enough.
Tina whispers, "Steve?"
I give her a shhhhh as I get into bed. Abby is on the left, Tina in the middle and Kathy on the right. I snuggle my way in between Tina and Kathy. Kathy quickly moves over as I spoon up to her. She took a beating tonight, this is her reward. Tina spoons up behind me. I hear Abby behind Tina and Abby touches me over Tina.
