Chapter 16.1
Sam shares his day with The Dire, but just focuses on the important parts, like the meeting at The Firm. He tells him about the three elite vampires that were brutally murdered by werewolves; two at their homes and one at The Firm, two nights ago. From there, he shares his findings, saying that 7 werewolves were on the scene. 2 werewolves per vampire, one to take down and the other to bite off their necks. However, with further investigation, he shares that there was another vampire there leading or aiding the werewolves. They detected his cologne and concluded that he must be a vampire because no 'Norms' are permitted on the property, and werewolves would never wear cologne. Plus, that elite vampire had to be out there meeting with someone they knew. He also shared his omega's findings that the werewolves themselves are from the Portland pack, run by Jeffrey Combs. Sharing all the details, he looks over at Sasha and then tells The Dire that she came out and shared the vampire community with her new power.
The Dire takes it all in and says, "Since you know who done this. What's your next step? Are you going to confront Jeffrey and his pack?"
Looking at the Dire with surprise, Sam says, "No, that would be too easy. The hard part is figuring out who the ring leader is within the vampire community and put an end to his reign of terror. If I take care of Jeffrey and his pack now, then the vampire in charge will slip away and find someone else to do his dirty work. It's best to search for him first, before dealing with Jeffrey. Plus, I have to know why would a vampire kill his own kind; and what is his motive?"
The Dire laughs at his brother's statement, but clearly sees that his laughter is hurting their feelings. Slowly he stops laughing, and says, "I apologize, brother and my mate. I am not laughing at you or the statement, but the situation. You see, that's why I chose you, Sam. You have heart; any fool can stop the war, but you want to dig deeper. Why is that, I wonder?"
Sam nods his head and says, "You're right, by the way. The real menace here is the vampire, cause he's using the werewolves for his own purpose. Sure, I can defeat Jeffrey and stop his pack from killing more vampires. But this vampire can easily find someone else to carry out his plans. I don't like it."
The Dire says, "Precisely, that's the test. The Firm could of easily sweep this under the rug and/or try taking care of it themselves. Bringing you into the fold allows them to avoid humiliation or embarrassment from the Elders. Technically, they are using you as a scapegoat if you fail. You're seeing the bigger picture. Here's a question for you; why do you care about these vampire killings?"
Sam looks at The Dire with a confused look and says, "Because my first mate is a vampire, for starters. Second, my whole family are vampires, and I care for them dearly. Just because they drink blood to survive doesn't mean they are killers or rogues, who have only one thing on their mind: their next meal. As I tell my mate, she's on a different plane of existence. However, she still has the human element to her. Without it, she would be seen as a monster. Those monsters are rogues; they don't care about their human side. All they care about is feeding."
The Dire looks at him and says, "Precisely. Every supernatural being used to be human in their lives. However, certain individuals are upsetting the balance by killing their own. My question to you is, what changed your thoughts on this subject? Clearly, something in your past changed you in such a way to look at this situation differently. What was it?"
Sam looks at The Dire and then at his slut. Nodding his head, he says, "The triplets. They were unique and clearly weren't rogues. However, I did my job and eliminated them, but listened to their story. That alone changed my views. Now I look at these missions differently, and I look to see if the human element exists before killing them. If it does, then maybe they have a chance at redemption, but unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't turn out as expected."
Nodding his head, The Dire says, "The triplets, indeed. You might not see this, Sam, but every job you took brought you to this spot. Yes, those triplets changed the game. They weren't rogues, and they were so close to being elite. They found their humanity again, but you, in the end, did your job. You're right, that mission changed you; it told you that anyone can be redeemed. You tried recently, but it failed. Yet you're still willing to try. Why?"
Sam looks over at him and shrugs his shoulders. He says, "If I am supposed to be the prophesied werewolf and bring the factions together. Wouldn't it be prudent to have a mixed pack to prove that we can indeed work together for a common goal, which is..peace?"
The Dire puts his head down and says, "Genius. I have chosen well. You started your pack with a Vampire, a Norm, and an Omega. Now you have two betas in the wind and more women on the outskirts. Your first mate won't be the only vampire in it; there will be others. With each job, your pack will grow, brother. Whether it will be people or knowledge." Taking a moment to collect his thoughts, he continues, "You see, you were on the right path with the jobs, but it wasn't clear enough for you to see. Your mates saw it but you didn't, hence why you came to me for guidance. So that's why I proposed this test for you, to test your thoughts and what's important to you. Clearly, we're on the same page. As for your new job at the Firm, your first mate is correct in her assumptions. The Firm may hide things to save their own asses, but there are other ways to get the information you seek. Be creative, my brother, and seek that vampire traitor. Only you can serve him justice. Any questions before I go?"
Sam looks at his slut and says, "My first mate revealed her secret; was that a wise decision?"
The Dire looks at Sasha and then at his brother. He then says, "It's hers to make. Your mate is growing every day, Sam. She grows stronger too, because of the essence she takes and your bond. She can't hide who she is forever. Same thing goes for you." He turns to look at each of them and then hears his mate speak for the first time in this meeting. Turning to her, he waits.
Sasha speaks up and asks, "I have a question if I may, Master..."
The Dire looks over at her and says, "I am not your Master. He is. We are mates, you and I."
Sasha giggles at that, but asks, "Well, my mate, I was wondering if I can pass on my unique ability as a Daywalker?"
The Dire nods his head and says, "Good question, my mate. The answer is yes and no. Yes, if you give your blood freely, but it has a time limit of consumption. Like anything else in life. Now, if someone drains you dry, with permission, it still follows the same rule. However, if they don't have your permission, then it's only blood. It has to be with your permission for it to work. Does that make sense?"
Sasha nods her head and says, "Thanks, I just wondered. I have a small request."
The Dire smiles and says, "Yes?"
Sasha grins back, feeling a sort of nervous, but says, "From one supernatural to another, may I hug you. I understand that you and my master are one of the same, but thank you for this gift and our bond with one another. Also, thanks for accepting me as your first mate. Truthfully speaking, I had no problems with being your slave."
The Dire raises his eyes to her last statement. Shrugging his shoulders, he says, "Only if under one condition, and that is, you continue to support my brother. He has much to learn and yet he's my chosen."
Sasha looks over to her Master. She smiles and says, "I will, always, because I love him. He's my everything."
