:: The Blackstone Family ::
Jason stared into the pitch-black stone in his hand. Its glassy luster pulled him in, almost like he was staring into the endless void of space itself. It seemed to grow cooler by the second. He shivered but could not let go. Inside he felt isolation. He needed someone to hold him. To feel the warmth of their body press against his--
"Are you staring at that dumb rock again?" interrupted Jessica. Jason shot up to see his sister standing outside the doorway of his room. She had shoulder-length almond hair, the same as him, with a tight purple sweater perfectly sculpting the shape of her boobs, and black pants to match. She
also
had her hands on her hips and a stern eyebrow raised with disapproval. "Dear lord, somebody help me. My brother is
such a weirdo
."
"N-no, I mean... I was just looking at it," he stammered, stuffing the stone into his pocket. How long had he been watching it this time? "It just looks cool," he mumbled, trying to hide his embarrassment.
"Ever since Mom found that at the flea market, it feels like you've been a million miles away. And honestly, you do you, but right now, I'm begging you,
please
finish cleaning up the living room before Kyle gets here. You and your friends left your GameCube controllers all over the floor."
Kyle was Jessica's boyfriend. They had been dating for almost a year. Jason had mixed feelings about their relationship but couldn't quite put a finger on why. Not like he could say anything though. He was, in fact, currently dating Kyle's older sister, Emma.
"Okay, okay! Just give me a sec and I'll be right down," said Jason. He stood to head towards the door, but Jessica reached out her hand.
"Give it here," she commanded.
"Huh?"
"The rock. Give it. I can't have you getting distracted again."
"Oh, come on. Jess, I'm not a kid. I can--"
"Gimme!"
"Okay, fine," he said, dropping the stone into her palm. "Anything to make this conversation end." Jessica tensed up slightly upon catching the stone in her hand as if someone had touched the back of her neck with an ice cube. She didn't seem to notice as Jason squeezed through the doorframe, stepping around her. Her eyes were locked on the stone in her hand.
"You okay?" asked Jason.
"Huh? Oh, yeah, sorry. I don't know, I was just distracted, ha ha!" she replied, stuffing the stone into her pocket.
"It's neat, right?"
"Whatever," she said, rolling her eyes. "I'm gonna get ready. Kyle should be here in about an hour." And with that, she turned around and hurried to her room at the end of the hall.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason looked up at the clock as he vacuumed the living room.
Kyle should be arriving any minute
, he thought. For some reason, that bothered him. He always had mixed feelings about the two dating, but today was different. Why
was
that? Was it
jealousy
? An older brother's protective instincts, maybe? He didn't like where his mind was headed, so he packed up the vacuum cleaner and went upstairs to let Jessica know he was done.
Surprisingly, Jessica's bedroom door was ajar. He peered inside and saw Jessica in full makeup, sitting at her computer desk. She was now wearing a cute black choker around her neck that perfectly matched the color of the glassy stone she was holding up to her face. She looked completely enthralled.
Wow
, Jason thought.
She really is beautiful
. Jason took a step into the room, sending a creak through the wooden floors, alerting Jessica who jumped and turned to him.
"Bro. Ever heard of knocking??" she asked sarcastically.
"You left the door open! Guess I'm not the only one getting distracted, huh, Sis?"
"It is
kind
of cool, I'll give you that," she said. She refused to look at him as she handed the stone back. Jason felt the familiar weight land in his palm, but oddly it came without the icy touch he was expecting. Besides the weight, the stone didn't feel like much at all.
As she handed him the stone, Jessica's fingers grazed Jason's palm and stopped. She lingered there for just a second too long before pulling back.
"Your hands are... warm," she said, her eyebrows furrowing.
"Huh?"
"Nevermind. Did you finish cleaning the living room?"
"Yup! Cleaned and vacuumed."
"Perfect. I'll be downstairs waiting for Kyle."
Jason watched as Jessica hurried down the stairs.
What was that?
He thought to himself. Then he looked down at the stone in his hands. It almost seemed to be
shimmering
. Tiny little glints of light, like stars, covered the surface.
"Hey Jess, did you do something to the stone?" he called out, but there was no response.
She must not have heard me
, he thought, following her back down towards the living room.
Jessica was sitting on the couch, cuddling a cushion, clearly lost in thought.
"Hey Jess, did you do something to the stone?" asked Jason, walking up to the couch. "It's all... sparkly now."
"The stone? No, I didn't. Let me see!"
Jason sat down next to Jessica, holding up the stone so she could see it.
"Whoa, when did that happen??" she asked excitedly, pressing against his arm. He could feel her warmth through his thin shirt.
"Isn't it one of the most beautiful things you've ever seen?" he asked, turning his head down towards her.
"Yeah. It really is." She said, still staring at the stone. She tilted her head up to meet his eyes.
For a moment the two siblings just gazed into each other's eyes. Jason inched his head a little closer, and Jessica responded in kind. She closed her eyes.
And then the doorbell rang.
"KYLE" screamed Jessica, as they both jumped up from the couch looking away from each other. Jason cleared his throat and headed towards the door.
"I-I'll get it," he stammered as he tried to process what just happened. As soon as he opened the door, he heard a familiar voice.
"Surprise!" shouted Emma. The young blonde woman jumped into his arms and pressed her lips against his. She was wearing a loose pink top and jeans. Jason, still in a daze, looked down at the beaming young woman who was pressed against his chest. "Kyle said he was going over, and I wasn't about to let my boyfriend third-wheel his ass all night long! No siree!"
Jason turned his head to look back at Jessica, who was holding her arm uncomfortably as she watched the two of them together.
"Sis, you're blocking the door. Are you gonna move, or what?" called out a voice behind Emma.
"Actually Kyle, I'm thinking Jason and I are just gonna start a new life right here. But you can always hop the fence and see if Jess can let you in from the back," she said, teasing.
"Har har," said Kyle, shoving his way past the embracing couple. "Hey, Jess! You okay? You look a little down."
"Oh, no, I'm great!" she replied, forcing a smile and pulling him into an embrace. "Just great! I'm glad you're here. I've been waiting for you all day." She looked over his shoulder towards Jason, who still had Emma buried into his chest. He looked back at her. For a moment, it seemed like they were both thinking the same thing.
Something doesn't feel right
.
Kyle broke his hug first. "So what have you been up to?" he asked Jessica.
"Oh, uh... Well, my mom found this weird stone at the flea market the other day, and it's really fascinating to look at. I was playing with it while waiting for you to get here."
Emma broke her hug next, her face full of concern. "Oh my god, Jess. We need to get you out of this house!"
"No, I get it. But it's way cooler than it sounds. Jason, show it to her."
"Ehh, I have a better idea. Jason, you order a pizza while I break out the beers in the fridge," said Emma, heading towards the kitchen.
Jason looked at his sister and mouthed the word "sorry."
Kyle gently touched Jessica on the shoulder and gave her a warm smile. "Don't worry about my sister. If you think this rock is worth seeing, I want to see it too." That was it. That smile was the reason they were dating. Kyle could be a dick sometimes, but when push came to shove, he was kind and genuine. So why did it feel so... different today?
"Here you go, Jess," said Jason as he walked up to her and handed her the stone again. This time the stone felt surprisingly warm in his hand, as if it had been sitting out in the sun all day. He handed it to Jessica meeting her eyes. Her expression said it all. She could feel it too.
"Whoaaa, it's almost like dragon glass from that one show!" said Kyle, picking up the stone from her hand. "Dude, where have you been keeping this thing, the freezer?"
Before anyone could reply, Emma called out from the other room, "So I guess I'm just drinking all these beers by myself??"
"We better get over there," said Jason.
