Spring Break Chapter 1 of 5

The twins want a more adult relationship with their parents.

Carol opened her laptop which was on the sofa next to her. She read it.

"Dear Mom and Dad,

"Your Mom and I will have to think about it and talk about it and get back to you. Okay?"

"I had hoped you would have been all excited and would have said something like, 'What a wonderful idea!' but I will be satisfied that you are giving it serious thought and will get back to us. I'll leave you two alone so that you can consider it." Oft times, if she did not have any homework, Sarah would camp out in the living room and watch some TV. By going right to her room she was hoping to give them the message, "I think this is really important so I hope you will get on it right away."

Get on it right away is what they did. After talking a while they went into the office and composed an e-mail to the twins, sending a copy to each of them.

Dear Twins,

Thank you for your thoughtful e-mail. We are going to start by apologizing for ignoring one of our own cardinal rules. We emphasize the importance of communication. Nevertheless we failed to communicate what our objectives were in having some family fun time (as you put it) as we took Tommy to college.
