Hey there, my name is James. If you are reading this, then you must be interested in my story of the Christmas I spent with my sister last year. Savannah has a birthday on Christmas day. Last year was her eighteenth, and boy did I ever learn the significance of that milestone!
First, some background. I am 26, seven years older than Savannah, that's a decent age gap. I always found her to be a bit annoying, she was clingy and would never leave my side, despite my best efforts to shove her away. My feelings for her changed five years ago, when both of our parents died in an accident, a hit and run. She was 14, and because I was 21 and we had no other family, I became her legal guardian. I resented her at first because I had to raise a teenager when I felt I should have been partying, getting drunk, and fucking as many babes as I could. But I had to step up and accept my new role when I saw how hard things got for her. She was deeply affected, she stopped hanging out with her friends, not that she had many to begin with, and it was months before she was able to go back to school. Even then, she wasn't the same.
I had to get two jobs to support us, we got an apartment and sold the house, I couldn't afford to keep it. It took her two years to get back to her old self and she had also become a rebellious teenager on top of that, which I suppose is normal, but she became clingy when she wasn't being a brat. I no longer minded it, I was all she had, she was all I had too. I decided that I would do everything I could to keep her happy and safe, even if it meant putting up with her attitude and scolding her when necessary.
As I mentioned, her birthday is on December 25th, Christmas Day, which meant she got double presents. Some time ago, I had decided that for her eighteenth, I was going to take her to a log cabin our parents once rented back in the day. I thought it might do her some good, boy was I right. The cabin was located in the Rocky Mountains, the part that runs through Colorado. I booked a reservation months in advance, long before I heard about the snowstorm that would be coming through while we were there. Luckily I had the bright idea to have Savannah's presents shipped there so I wouldn't have to worry about carrying them in my luggage on the flight.
My sister is a bit of a geek, she loves anime and video games. That was nothing new, she loved those before our parents passed. Mom and Dad used to scold her for playing too much, as for me, I let her play all she wants as long as it keeps her happy. It took her some time before she could pick up a controller again, so I welcomed any and all of her old habits returning. Her therapist recommended that she find other hobbies. We tried many, and she eventually took one up that she still enjoys to this day, drawing. I make sure she always has notebooks, sketchbooks, and plenty of pencils handy. Back to her presents, I bought her one of the latest gaming systems, some outfits I noticed her fawning over, some anime on blu-ray, and a shitload of paper and pencils, $1,000+ I do not regret. Little did I know that I would be giving her more than those presents. So, enough about all that, time to get to what happened.

It was the morning of Christmas Eve at 4 in the morning. We had to be at the airport in an hour and a half and it would take us 45 minutes to get there. I knocked on her door, already dressed and ready to go.
"Banana!! Get up and get ready!!" I have a lot of nicknames for her, but "Banana" is my favorite. All of them annoy her, but that's what makes it fun!
"I'm awake, Jimmy!! I'm putting my clothes on!!" She shouted from inside her room. Pissing her off is the best way to get her going in the morning, she'll drag her feet if I don't. I waited until she came out, she was wearing her outfit for the flight, but her long brown hair looked like she hadn't combed it in years. "WHAT???" She glared at me.
"If you're going to the airport with your hair looking like that, I'm not sitting with you on the plane." I shrugged. Her cheeks puffed out and her face turned red with anger.
"I'M GOING TO COMB MY HAIR, DUMBASS!!!" She stormed into the bathroom and slammed the door.
"AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!" I shouted, snickering a bit.
"GO BRUSH YOUR ASS!!!!" She screamed back. Satisfied that I had gotten her fully awake, I made us a quick breakfast; bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits for the win! Normally we brush our teeth after breakfast, but that morning we needed to eat on the road. She came out of the bathroom about the time I finished, her hair looked much better.
"Oh good, you look presentable now. Got your carry-on ready?"
"Yeah, yeah, let's go." She answered, slightly less irritated than she was a few minutes prior.
"Cool. I've got the rest of our luggage packed already. We'll eat on the way there."
"'Kay." Savannah was still a bit groggy but she had been excited for this trip so between that and my teasing, she was ready to go. I put our breakfast into a shopping bag, and then we carried our things to the SUV, tossed our carry-ons into the back seat, and left.
Savannah is normally quite chatty, but the ride to the airport was quiet for the most part. A few minutes after we finished our breakfast, I looked over at her and noticed she had nodded off. Since I was driving, I let her have a little more sleep. We pulled into the parking lot with a few minutes to spare. Feeling that I had stopped, she woke up.
"Are we there?"
"Yep. Nervous about flying for the first time?"
"I dunno, I haven't really thought about it." She answered, but then she perked up a bit, excitement over the trip activating her brain. "How long will it take us to get there? Is there a lot of snow on the ground already? Can we build a snowman??"
"Woah there, one question at a time! The flight is supposed to last about an hour, there is already snow on the ground there with more coming, and we should be able to build an impressive snowman." I answered.
She beamed as she unfastened her belt, then opened her door and got out. "Come on, slow poke! We've got a plane to catch!!" She slammed the door shut, and to think I was the one rushing HER earlier. I unpacked most of our luggage and dragged the heavier ones behind me, thank God for wheels. We made our way into the terminal to present our tickets.
"Good morning, names please?" The receptionist asked. I told her my name, and then started to introduce Savannah as "Banana" until she elbowed my side and introduced herself, I can't help myself sometimes. Her irritation with me didn't last long, as she decided to flood me with more questions about the trip while we passed the numerous security checkouts. Once we arrived at the gate, Savannah stood at the window and watched the planes take off and land.
"Wow, we're going to be getting onto one those soon, huh?"
"Yeah, getting nervous now?"
"A little, but I'm more excited than anything! Um, thank you, for this... One day, I'll be able to do something awesome for you on Christmas, and on your birthday!" She declared.
"You're welcome, but you don't have to do that. Knowing you're having a good time is present enough for me!" I put my hand on top of her head and messed her hair up a little, not so much that she couldn't easily fix it.
"Way to ruin the moment, Butthole!" She turned her back to me and fixed her hair. I had my usual goofy grin on my face whenever I ruffle her feathers.
The time before we boarded the plane went by more quickly than I thought it would. We spent most of the time sitting together. Savannah had pulled her sketchbook out of her carry-on and started working on some of her art. She likes to draw all sorts of things, like anime characters, scenery, whatever she feels like. I glanced over to look, expecting to see her drawing either the inside of the terminal or the runway, but it was actually an image of ME! She had drawn me half-naked with huge bulging muscles, holding a sword and a shield, and it looked like I was protecting someone. The girl behind "me" looked oddly like Savannah. This wasn't the first time I had caught her drawing me, one time she drew me wearing some kind of superhero costume and fighting a creature that I assume was from space. Was this how she viewed me? Was I a superhero or some kind of protector to her? I try my best to keep her safe, but it was nice to know she appreciated it. Little did I know at the time, there was more to it than that.
"HEY!! No peeking!!!" She drew her book close to her chest, clearly embarrassed.
"Sorry" I apologized, choosing not to tease her about it. I knew what lines I shouldn't cross when it came to picking on her, teasing her about her art was one of those lines. The awkward moment was broken by the announcement to begin boarding our plane. Savannah stuffed her sketchbook into her bag, then joined me in line. We were seated with no incident, and the flight went similarly. I thought she might resuming sketching, but instead she spent most of the flight looking out the window, and asking me questions like how high we were, how fast we were going, etc.
At the end of the flight, we landed on an airstrip, the black asphalt was in stark contrast to the white snow on the ground everywhere else. We were lucky to get there when we did, all flights for the next few days got cancelled due to the incoming storm. The cabin was still a good bit away, we had to rent a car and drive three hours to get there. Savannah was chattier on that road trip, talking about all the snow everywhere, and asking if the power would go out in the cabin. Eventually, we pulled into the carport, which meant that I wouldn't have to dig the car out from under all the snow.
"Woah! This place is so cool! And huge!!" She beamed.
"It's really going to be 'cool' later when the temp drops into the single digits. Don't play outside after dark or you'll turn into a 'Banana popsicle'."
"That was a lame joke, Jimmy." She wasn't wrong, that is why I've never tried stand-up. We dragged our luggage into our separate bedrooms, then Savannah wanted to play immediately after.
"Let's get to work on that snowman!"
"Can't we rest a bit first?" I was tired, I was the one doing all the heavy lifting.
"You can rest later, we don't have very long before the sun goes down!"
"Fine.. make sure you bundle up first, Hannah." Hannah is another favorite of mine. She gave me a dirty look, then ran into her bedroom. I went into mine and applied a thick layer of clothing. Once properly dressed, we went out the front door. There was definitely enough snow on the ground to make a snowman, we could have given him a wife and kids if we wanted, and mother nature was about to drop enough for him to have extended family as well. Savanna excitedly helped me roll some decent sized balls to make up the two parts of the body and the head, but was perfectly content to let me lift them on top of each other, nice of her.
"He needs eyes, a nose, a mouth, and arms!" She stated.
"No shit, Sherlock." She narrowed her eyebrows at me. "Let's see what we can find in the cabin, we need to warm up anyway."
I had never felt so happy to feel warm as I was the moment we stepped back inside. The thermometer outside said 25, it was 29 earlier. The temperature was dropping fast, but Savannah's spirits were rising. I was taking my time to warm up, but she was on a mission to find snowman body parts. She found some coal in a bag packed away in one of the back rooms.
