Brendan was the first to wake up and decided he wanted to go to the convenience store next door. The last 24 hours had kicked his hankering for nicotine into overdrive and he couldn't ignore the cravings anymore. The first thing he noticed as he entered was 2 pickup trucks parked outside with multiple men that he knew and many he didn't recognize. Brendan went into the store and bought his cigarettes and when he came out he noticed that all the men by the trucks were watching him so he decided to keep what he was sure to be a confrontation out of the motel room and outside where he could control the situation. As Brendan got to his vehicle he opened the drivers door and brushed his finger across the finger scanner that held his M1911 and 2 extra magazines. Making sure to keep his movements suppressed so as to not alert the men that had obviously been sent by his mother to return him and his sister to her home. Brendan pocketed an extra mag and made it look like he was busy getting a cigarette lit. As Brendan listened he could hear the men approaching from behind but paid them no heed as he wanted them closer in order to swiftly dispatch them if needed. Brendan had endured hours of vigorous self defense lessons his father had pushed onto him saying that the skills he was teaching him could come in handy someday so when the closest man put his hand on his shoulder Brendan reacted purely on instinct.
Brendan grabbed the man's hand flipping his arm up and over his head putting the man into an arm bar that would keep the man under his control and swung the gun around to face the rest of the men. The men stopped visibly shaken by the sudden and violent apprehension of one of their men.
"I'm gonna ask this only once," Brendan stated, "who sent you? My mother?"
"Son, we don't want any trouble. We just came at the behest of your mother to bring you and your sister back home."
"Yeah? Tough shit. She chose her way of handling things and now my sister and I are headed as far as possible from her and this state. You either leave peacefully or the next action I take will be in defense of my sister and I."
Brendans' threat was clear to these men. If they didn't leave him and his sister alone they could be facing a bullet to chest or head however one of the men didn't take him seriously and made a move to advance on Brendan thinking if they all moved at once he couldn't possibly hold them all back Brendan wasn't having any of it. With one swift movement Brendan kicked the back of the knee of the man he currently held in the arm bar dropping him to the floor and took a two handed stance firing off a single round into the advancing man's knee. "Last warning gentlemen, leave or be fired upon!"
Brendan took the butt of his pistol and swung it down on the back of the first man's head knocking him out with a measured strike just below the nape of the skull. Bringing his gun level with the men again he took a steadying stance prepared to use lethal force if need be to protect his sister. The men, realizing that there was no talking him down and knowing he had training they were not made aware of, decided to pick up their stricken comrades and took off back to their trucks. Brendan rushed into the motel room and saw his sister was already hurriedly packing their belongings and dressed.
"Sherry we gotta go! Now!" Brendan helped his sister get their belongings into the Jimmy and jumped into the driver's seat and waited for his sister to hop into the cab before he threw the truck into reverse and peeled out of the motel parking lot. He knew it would only be a matter of time before cops showed up asking what happened and he wanted to be far ahead of them before anymore trouble could be had.
As Brendan threw the Jimmy into third gear and floored it hoping to hit the highway before anyone could pursue them Sherry looked at him and asked, "what just happened back there? And did I hear a gunshot? Are you hurt?"
Brendan took a long drag from a newly lit cigarette rolling down his window. "It was an ambush. Mom sent those men after us to bring us back and I had to use my gun to stop one of them from advancing. FUCK!" Brendan hit the steering wheel with the palm of his hand causing the vehicle to jerk, scaring Sherry. "Of course she had to take drastic measures. I'm just glad dad warned us last night."
Sherry contemplated what Brendan had said and knew her brother needed her now more than ever. He hated violence and always had but was willing to use it in order to protect her, she just didn't realize just how far he'd be willing to go. Sherry realized there was a lot she hadn't realized about her lover and that scared her a little but she knew that their course had been set and nothing was gonna stop them from being together.
"Brendan, as soon as you can stop at a rest area so we can regroup and make sure we lose any pursuers that may be on our tail. I hope you have prepared for this because now I'm terrified of what she may try next." Sherry was visibly shaken but the look of determination on her face melted Brendan as he reached for her hand.
"Nothing's gonna stop us from being together but the next step would be the involvement of police so yes I have prepared for such a thing. Look in the glovebox you'll find a new set of registered plates. As soon as we park we're gonna take off the old plates and put on the new ones so that any police that we see won't be able to track us with the use of license plate recognition software. The plates are registered to one of 3 aliases that I prepared with dad's insistence. Not even he knows the full extent of the aliases he had me prepare."
Sherry was shocked to hear just how prepared her brother and father had been for an emergency. She sat there wondering why her dad had Brendan prepare for such an occasion but didn't have time to wonder too much as they pulled into a rest area. She got out and was handed a drill to replace the plates while Brendan went to the back of the Jimmy and pulled out a phone.
"I thought we weren't using phones? Isn't it dangerous?"
Brendan showed her the phone he had pulled out and saw that it was what was considered a burner phone. "One time use only then I dump it in the nearest toilet. I gotta make a phone call to someone real quick." Brendan keyed in the phone number for someone he thought he'd never have to call but he considered this desperate times.
