This is a repost of an old story from when I was on here under a different username.
Ryan Carson sat at the kitchen table, his attention fixed on the screen of his mobile phone. Ryan would occasionally glance up and look at his mother, Ellie, as she prepared dinner. Their routine was the same every weekday, Ryan arrived home from college and made a start on any coursework he had to complete, when Ellie arrived home she would change and start cooking dinner. Glad to get out of her business attire, Ellie usually wore leggings and a loose t-shirt around the house. Ryan noticed that as she cooked she hummed or sang a favourite tune.
Tonight was no different, except for Ellie wearing a short vest top, probably due to the hot weather. Ryan watched his mother as she moved around, his eyes fixed on her cute butt. Not wanting to get caught Ryan went back to looking at his phone screen, Ellie smiled as she knew Ryan had been watching her. Despite her son thinking he was being discreet, Ellie knew he watched her. She didn't mind, it was nice to know someone so young was interested in her. Ellie was only thirty-five years old. Ryan admired his mother's slim figure. Her long hair and young looks captivated Ryan.
"Ryan, can you lay the table, please." Ellie asked as she smiled at her son. Ryan nodded and set about laying two places, he poured them both a glass of orange juice. Ellie put the plates down and sat opposite her son, they rarely spoke while eating. Conversation was reserved for later when they had eaten and tidied up.
Ellie watched as her son cleared away the plates and washed everything up, she noted how much Ryan was like his late father. When Ryan was finished he followed his mother into the lounge, usually they would sit and discuss their days or watch TV. Tonight Ryan wanted to talk to his mother, he just wasn't sure how she would respond.
"Mum, do you mind if I ask you something?" Ryan asked nervously.
Ellie looked at the concern etched on her son's face, she feared that he had bad news. "Of course you can, what do you want to talk about?" Ellie replied, steeling herself for a shock.
"I wanted to talk about Dad. If that's okay, I mean if you don't mind." Ryan felt the butterflies in his stomach. His father was something they hadn't discussed at great length, mostly because he didn't want to upset his mother.
"Sure. I guess so. If you don't mind me asking, what brought this on, wanting to talk about your Dad?" Ellie replied.
"It's just something that happened at college, some of the guys were talking about their Dads'. I realised that I didn't really know much about my Dad, apart from the few times you have mentioned him. I have wanted to ask you for some time, I just don't want to upset you, that's all." Ryan looked at his mother to see how she would react to the question. He was relieved when she smiled.
"Oh Ryan, you could have asked me anytime, I don't mind talking about your Father." Ryan relaxed and let out a breath.
"Can you tell me everything Mum, you know how you met and stuff like that?"
Ellie shuffled in her seat to get comfortable.
"Okay, I'll tell you everything, well almost everything." Ellie giggled. "I met Tony, your Dad when we were at secondary school, we were both twelve-years old. I liked him from the first time we spoke."
"I didn't know he felt the same way about me. The school was having an end of term disco for all the students, your Dad asked me if I would go with him. Naturally I was pleased he asked me, by now I really fancied your Dad. A lot of other girls were jealous that I was the one he picked to accompany him. We had a great time and your Dad walked me home at the end of the evening, he said goodnight and kissed me on the cheek. From that night we were boyfriend and girlfriend, and some of the other girls were really pissed off." Ellie paused and watched Ryan smile waiting for her to continue.
"Although we were considered a couple, other girls still chased after your Dad, I also had other boys show an interest in me. Eventually people worked out we were a couple and left us alone, my family were unsure if it was healthy, as they put it, for me to have a boyfriend at such a young age. We didn't spend all of our free time together, we still had our own friends. My parents finally realised that we liked each other a lot, in fact I knew I loved your Dad."
"That was a young age to know you were in love Mum, you must have been what, fourteen at the time?"
"I was about that age when I realised I was in love, and not some silly schoolgirl crush. Your Dad and I were sitting in the park one summer evening. It was during the school holidays, a large group of us had been there talking and playing games. As the group thinned out, your Dad said he would walk me home. As we stood up he stared at me, then he smiled and told me he loved me. We stood and kissed as some of the others whistled and called out for us to get a room." Ellie laughed as she recalled that evening. "We decided not to say anything to our families about how serious we were, my parents would have told me I was being stupid."
"Did they not like Dad? I know grandma always spoke badly about him." Ryan asked.
"No they liked him, until things went wrong. My parents thought I was too young, they were sure we would split up when we left school and started working. You know, when you start meeting other people and whatever, you realise that maybe there Is someone else out there for you. I really don't know if that would have happened or not." Ellie paused, Ryan noticed her eyes welling up.
"Mum, I'm sorry. You can stop if you don't want to carry on."
"No, I'm okay. I was pretty sure your Dad was the one for me, he told me the same thing on several occasions. How I found out your Dad was a good man, well boy at the time, was when I got pregnant. We had been at a party, it was the older brother of one of our friends' birthday party. We had a few drinks and danced. We stayed the night and I got pregnant when we had sex for the first time. When I worked out I was pregnant a few weeks later, I cried so much. Your Dad held me, I think he cried as well. We were both terrified, we had to tell our parents, obviously I couldn't hide the fact. As I expected my parents went mad, they wanted to call the police and get your Dad arrested. His parents were not exactly pleased, but they wanted to meet and discuss things." Ellie paused again and looked at her son, he nodded and smiled.
"We sat around your Dad's parent's house while the parents talked about the situation, nobody asked us what we thought or what we should do. That was until your Dad stepped up and asked if we had any say about it. My mother screamed that he had done enough, my Dad stared at him with a look of hatred I had never seen before."
"My mother wanted me to have a termination. I stood up and told them all there was no way I was having an abortion, your Dad hugged me and agreed with me. After everyone calmed down, we had a civil conversation, well more civil than it was before."
"Everyone knew that trying to talk me into having an abortion was a lost cause. Finally, it was agreed that I would have the baby. My mother would look after it while I completed school. Your Dad's parents paid for most of the stuff we needed, the cot and other things."
"That must have been tough for you Mum?" Ryan asked, then realised how stupid that statement was.
Ellie shuffled in her seat. "It was really tough. I was far too young to know how tough it was going to be. All the girls at school asked me a million questions, none of which I had an answer for. I told them the morning sickness was a bitch, as I got bigger getting comfortable was another problem. After you were born I returned to school. I had a lot of work to catch up on, even though I had work sent home when I wasn't able to attend school. Your Dad helped me when he could, he visited every night to see me, and you. Your Dad was brilliant, he took to being a Dad very well, despite being so young. When I left school and started working that was when your grandmother showed her true colours. I had been working for about two months, your Dad had just started a job. That was when my mother said I had to leave home, apparently she didn't want me and you there any longer. My Dad agreed with her, I honestly think she bullied him into it. When your Dad's parents found out they took us in." Ryan gasped in surprise. "Can you get me a cold drink please. Ryan?"
Ryan got a drink for himself and his mother. "I never knew that about Grandma?" Ryan sat down and looked at his mother. "Mum, we can stop if you want to." Ellie shook her head.
"I'll carry on, Ryan. Now I knew your Dad's family had money, not that it bothered me. I would have still loved your Dad if they were broke. Your grandfather made his money in property rental, he had one house that he agreed to let us have. It was a tiny starter home, but it was home for the three of us. By now I had hardly any contact with my family, they visited when it suited them. Your Dad's parents helped us a lot in the beginning, without them we would have been on the streets." Ryan thought about his grandparents, he remembered his Dad's parents, his mothers, not so much.
"We had just got settled in the house when your Dad passed away." Ellie paused to sip her drink. Ryan wondered if he shouldn't have asked about his Dad. "Your Dad collapsed at work, he was dead before the ambulance got to him. My parents said they were sorry, but kept their distance, they never even showed up for his funeral."
"Seriously, I can't believe they would do that! They might not have liked him, but that was plain cruel."
"That was the final straw for me, I stopped having any contact with them. Your Dad's parents helped me out until you started school. It was a while after that your grandfather decided to retire, he sold off all the property that he owned, except one." Ellie looked up and waved her hands. "Your grandpa gifted me this house. They retired and kept in touch until they both passed away, my parents passed away before your Dad's."
Ryan moved across to the couch and hugged his mother. He was sorry that he had asked her about his Dad. Ellie said he had a right to know and she would have had to tell him at some point. Ryan felt a little better, despite apologising several times.
"Don't apologise Ryan, you have a right to know. If you want to know what your Dad looked like, then go look in the mirror. I can't believe how much like him you are. Your Dad was a great guy, he put us before anything or anyone else."
For the rest of the evening Ryan talked about other things, his mother looked tired after explaining everything to him earlier. That night in bed Ryan felt guilty, he quietly cursed himself for asking about his Dad. He wanted to know, but not at the expense of his Mother's happiness. Ellie lay in bed thinking of what she had revealed to her son earlier. Clearly he was smart enough to work out that she was a teenage Mum, that didn't take a genius to figure that out.
The following morning Ryan hugged his mother and apologised again for asking about his Father. Ellie assured him it was okay, she kissed his cheek and left for work. Life continued as normal after that day. Ryan had started to help his mother more by making a start on dinner. Ellie appreciated the help, although her son's culinary skills had room for improvement. Ellie was due to spend a few days away on business, she cooked and froze several meals for Ryan. The truth was that Ellie was worried that Ryan probably wouldn't cook if he was on his own.
"There are meals in the freezer Ryan, you have no excuse not to eat. Apart from that the usual rules apply, no parties and look after the house." Ellie advised her son. Ryan nodded in agreement.
Ellie knew that Ryan would probably have a friend over, she assumed it would be a male friend. Ryan had other ideas. With the house to himself, Ryan invited Angie over. Angie was a friend with benefits, she attended the same college as Ryan. Angie wouldn't have cared less if Ellie was at home or not, in her mind sex was to be enjoyed. Ryan liked Angie, partly because she was hot in bed. The other reason, although he would never admit it, was Angie looked similar to his mother.
