Jill, 38, was a petite brunette. Only 5'5 she had the attitude of a honey badger, but her double D's made her look like a porn star. Chad, 18, and recently graduated high school had topped out at 6'3. Being a quarterback who recently accepted a scholarship, Chad knew this was going to be his last summer home before going off to college. To Chad's surprise his mother, Jill, had already suggested several trips throughout the summer to celebrate his journey to college.
"Got everything? Bug spray? Tents--"
"Mom, everything is in the van, we've been ready for an hour."
"Jeez, I just wanted to make sure."
Standing in the living room Jill walked around the house with a clipboard full of tick marks and notes, most crossed off. She glanced around when she heard Chad rush upstairs.
"Shit! I almost forgot!"
"Like I said..." Jill muttered.
"I heard that!" shouted Chad from upstairs.
Several minutes went by before she smiled, nodded to herself and set down the clipboard. Grabbing her purse and keys, she stopped at the stairs hearing no sounds from Chad's room.
"Chad, comm 'on! We need to go soon, or it will be dark when we get to the campsite."
[Silence]
"Chad?" Her voice quivered.
Slowly she placed one hand on the railing and one foot on the first step. Suddenly, Chad popped around the corner upstairs and barreled down the stairs with a pair of wireless earphones in each ear.
"Figures..."
"Sorry, I couldn't hear you, what?"
"Nothing, are you ready?"
Nodding to the music while he danced out of the house, his mom shook her head annoyed while she locked up. Driving for several hours Jill's eyes widened upon the realization she had driven the wrong direction.
"Shit," she whispered.
"What?"
"Nothing, I forgot to reserve a campsite."
Chad stopped his rhythmic movement to the music and sat up in his chair before removing the ear buds.
"You...you...forgot to make a reservation. Wow...living on the wild side."
"Whatever, we'll stop at a hotel ton--"
"Hotel?! No way, its still light, we will find a spot to camp."
Chad opened his phone and within minutes found a spot. Arriving with a couple hours of daylight left, Chad quickly setup the two-person tent, both sleeping bags on each side of the ten by ten.
"Alright mom, I want to go on a hike before the sunsets, do you need anything else?"
"Nope, tent is setup, I'll unpack everything, go enjoy your hike. Be careful.
"I won't go far. I just want to see the sunset on the ridge up ahead. Also, don't eat my brownies, they're in my bag, they are very special brownies if you know what I mean."
His moms jaw dropped open and she began looking over her shoulders.
"Are you serious, I was driving with an illegal substance?"
"They are weed brownies...calm down Ms. Kingpin. Also, why are you whispering, no one is around for miles."
"Well, you better enjoy them here because I am not driving back with those in the car."
Chad slightly shook his head and chuckled. Jill watched him go up the trail with nothing but a water bottle.
