Her brother Josh was 20 when I moved in; at first glance a jock through and through. Well manicured, built like my uncle at 6'1" and a sharp dresser when the occasion called for it sporting all of the top name brands. Up front everyone always assumed he was a typical sports focused guy with no personality and a cruel demeanor. After an hour with Josh, everyone would wind up disarmed by his charm and stoicism, dispelling all misconceptions of who he was from his appearance. Josh was at a summer training camp in Wisconsin for football when I moved there, doing what I thought was his only true love.
Mark and Paul, the twins, were a few months younger than I was and about to turn 19 at the end of the summer. They were the shortest of the family being only 5'10", but they were always the tallest presence in a room. They were thin but cut and played a lot of soccer and absolutely phenomenal musicians pulling from my uncles dramatic abilities. ClichΓ© twin-like mischief was always abound and they made it their business to pick on anyone and everyone whenever possible while still somehow making the masses fall for them. We spent the most time together growing up and I hoped this summer would be no exception. Having the largest room in the loft with three somewhat private dormers, I was setup in their room for the upcoming school season.
My youngest cousin Lacey at 18 and still already a remarkable 6'1" like Josh possessed an inexplicable ability to talk to anyone. Her unassuming and inquisitive approach to any topic made her very likeable and a confidant of sorts to even some of my older cousins or aunts and uncles outside of their family. Most would think she was a few years older than she was after speaking with her and not going into her last year of high school. Despite having the tiniest frame, being somewhat reserved and coming across naΓ―ve with her curiosity to other's thoughts/insights I would come to learn she had the sharpest wit and intellect of anyone I've ever known.
I'm still frequently flabbergasted that this family exists. How unlikely that two attractive, magnanimous adults could somehow be so successful in life and raising five equally attractive and magnanimous kids. Even more unlikely that they somehow surpassed their parent's charms and beauty in their own ways. But the least likely part of all of it, (and why I've often considered myself to be the luckiest person alive), are the things I did with all five of my cousins in the year I lived with them.
