My two sisters and I moved in with our mother to save money. We quickly discovered other benefits of living and playing together. It all started a few months ago when I proposed the idea at a family get together.
Peggy popped the cork on another bottle of champagne. The cork ricocheted off the ceiling. We all laughed. Starting our third bottle, everything seemed funny.
It was the first time we'd all been together since Christmas. We lived within an hour of each other, texted and emailed semi-regularly but just never got together. Our sister Cathy's divorce was final today. Mom thought she'd need support from her family so had invited us all to her house.
Actually, Cathy was in a great mood, relieved that it was finally over.
Her opening toast was "Here's to good riddance of bad rubbish."
She was the last of us to divorce. Mine was a few months ago, Mom's last year and Peggy's a couple years ago. It wasn't that we married young, we were all out of college, it's just that we aren't good at picking partners and some of them and us weren't good at the monogamy thing. Mom hung in the longest.
The conversation, actually more like the chatter had been pretty light all evening.
Cathy held up the last piece of pizza, said, "Champagne and pizza, food of the God's."
Mom asked, "Should I order some more?"
We all shook our heads, no.
Mom said authoritatively, "Just so you all know, no one's driving anywhere. There's plenty of room, you'll all stay here tonight."
Peggy says, "I'm tall tight."
Mom laughs, "Yeah you sound tall tight. Don't make me take away your keys."
We sat in silence for a while.
I looked at Cathy, said, "On a serious note, what are you going to do with your house? Are you planning on selling it?"
"I'm not sure. I love it but it's really more house than I need. I can afford the mortgage, but it won't leave a lot of discretionary money. I'll just have to tighten my belt and be careful."
Peggy said, "I know what you mean. By the time I pay my mortgage, utilities, taxes and buy food there's nothing left for fun. I just live paycheck to paycheck."
I chimed in, "I hear your pain. I'm flat-out house poor."
Everyone added comments. I'd like to buy a new car. I'd like to be able to take a real vacation. I'd like to be able to afford eggs. The egg comment drew laughter.
I said, "I've been thinking about this quite a while. We live in the best climate in the country. We have beaches, mountains, of course desert, loads of entertainment and other attractions. We have it all, our problem is we can't afford to enjoy much of it. One income just can't handle our house payments."
Peggy, "So what do we do, downsize? Move to a small apartment? Move out of state?"
I said, "It's probably the champagne talking but I'm gonna tell you my idea. You'll probably think I'm crazy but hear me out."
Cathy, "We all know you're crazy with or without champagne."
Everyone chuckled.
I asked, "What if we team up? For example, what if Cathy and I sell one of our houses? That should be easy. The price of real estate is skyrocketing, it's a sellers' market. So, we sell one house and move in together and share housing expenses, mortgage, utilities, upkeep etc. Right off the bat we've each cut our housing costs in half. We'd be able to breathe again."
Cathy, "I like the sound of half a mortgage payment. It has a pleasant ring to it. And actually, Peg and I have discussed moving in together."
Peggy, "Yeah, we have. It does make some sense. If I could cut my mortgage payment, I could replace my old clunker."
Laughing she adds, "And afford to buy meat and eggs."
Mom says, "Well, I haven't wanted to worry you all, but I'm in the same boat too. My alimony ends soon and there's no way I can afford to stay here on my salary."
I said, "Ok then here's something else to consider. What if all three of us sell our houses? We can move in here with Mom and split her payment 4 ways. We'll have some cash in the bank and cut our monthly nut a bunch. We'll have our own little family commune, and Mom won't have to move."
Peggy, "Sounds a little crowded to me?"
Me, "It might be a little crowded but think about it. The house has 3 big bedrooms plus a mother-in-law suite with a kitchen. This place is huge."
Peggy. "Don't forget the pool house, it's got a little kitchen too. But the idea is a bit wild. There's a lot of details to talk about. Mom, what do you think?"
We all looked at Mom. She was wiping tears.
I said, "Mom I'm sorry I brought this up. Just forget everything we've said. Please don't cry."
She brushed away a tear, said, "I'm not upset. I'm happy. Just thinking that we would all be together and I won't have to move gives me joy. I have some friends that were about to lose their home, and their kids moved in with them. It worked good for them. If some or all of you decide to do it, it'll be fine with me. We can make it work. But you all need to take some time and think it over it'd be a big change."
Over the next month or so we exchanged numerous group texts and actually called each other frequently. My idea was getting legs. One evening the girls and I got together at my house and talked into the wee hours. Cathy made a pro and con list. By the time we broke up we'd crossed off most of the cons. We worked through a lot of logistics. Both girls wanted their own kitchen so Peggy picked the mother-in-law suite and Cathy picked the pool house. That left me with the two bedrooms, which was fine with me. As they were leaving, I told them I was ready to make the move. I had already called a realtor friend. They both said they were seriously considering it but wanted to talk to an attorney first. We all agreed that it was a good idea.
The next morning, I signed the listing. She showed the house three times on the first day. All three made over full price offers. I was ecstatic. I accepted the cash offer. They wanted a quick closing. I was in business.
I told the girls and met with Mom. I agreed to pay half the mortgage, utilities and upkeep. I sold some of my stuff, gave some away and put the rest in storage. I moved into the pool house temporarily until the girls made a decision.
It was evening when I hauled some of my stuff into Mom's.
She helped me get organized then said, "It's a beautiful evening let's go for a swim."
I agreed. I ordered some Cuban sandwiches and fried plantains from a local eatery.
She went in the house, returned in her bathing suit carrying a couple bottles of Prosecco, said, "I'm so excited you're finally here. We're going to celebrate."
I stuck a bottle in the fridge and opened the other. We swam and played in the pool, enjoyed our sandwiches and sipped the bubbly for a while. We finished a bottle and moved to lounges. I opened the second bottle and filled our glasses.
Mom was giggling, said. "I feel like a newlywed. How about a dance? I haven't danced in forever."
She fiddled with her phone, soon we had music. We danced, laughed and continued the champagne. She preferred slow songs holding me tight against her. The last couple of tunes she had her arms around my neck, head on my chest slowly swaying.
I had just stowed the dead soldier in the trash when she said. "I'm a little woozy. Think it's time for me to say good night."
I said, "I need to whiz. After that, I'll walk you to your room."
I took care of business. When I came out, she was lying on my bed, naked. Her bathing suit was on the floor. She was on her side, on top of the covers.
She was breathing and softly snoring, which I took as a good sign. I tried to talk to her but she was obviously out cold. I stood and stared. I had never seen her naked. She had nice boobs. They weren't large but perfectly shaped with perky nipples. The skin on her torso was smooth but pale in contrast to her tanned legs and shoulders, her butt was round and firm, her legs well-muscled and toned. Her feet and tiny polished toes were cute.
I tried once again to wake her. No response. I took a blanket from the closet, covered her, turned out the lights and made my way to her room. I stripped off my swim trunks and settled into her bed. I inhaled her scent as I drifted off to sleep.
I heard her voice as I awakened.
She was standing next to the bed in a short nightgown. My eyes travelled from those cute feet up her long legs. She was smiling as she asked how I was feeling.
