Ezra watched as his brother, Daniel, his wife Su, and their daughter Candy got off the train. The late August day was sweltering, doubly so for the visitors used to Indiana's comparatively mild summers. Even this far north in California, it was like the sun sat on your shoulder. Hot in the shade. The family's faces expressed their discomfort as they squinted and wiped their brows. They walked toward him, Su trying to look pleasant, and Candy a little less nervous then she obviously was. Not Daniel though. His grim face was set in stone like it always had been, yet still expressed his distaste at dealing with his brother. He looked like he had stepped in something. He was doing that walk he did, the one that looked like he was hurrying a bit more than he needed to. He thought it looked hard for a middle aged man to do. It had looked intimidating to Ezra when Daniel regularly gave him bloody noses. Now it was just silly and performative.
Candy had graduated form high school last spring. When they had spoken, Daniel and Ezra's mom and dad had sung her praises. Straight As, never getting in trouble. No drinking or boys. She had just been a kid the last time Ezra had seen her a decade earlier. He was shocked at how much she had come to look like her mom. Ezra and his family were corn fed Midwesterners and Su was Korean. That had been quite the scandal when Daniel dated and married her, but the family eventually adapted.
As he approached, Daniel mechanically shook his hand. "Ezra," he said. "Thanks for agreeing to the plan." As always, he crushed Ezra's hand like he had something to prove. He did, of course.
Said plan was that Candy would stay with Ezra while she went to the small local university. It was a plan that Ezra was distinctly unhappy about, but Daniel, along with Su and Mom and Dad, had convinced him. More like strong-armed him. He couldn't stand up to all of them, especially with the house he lived alone in and being the only family member out west. They told him he wouldn't even notice she was there. He doubted it.
He especially doubted he wouldn't notice her with how she looked now. She took after her mom, with straight black hair in a sensible bob and black, slightly epicanthic eyes. Her round face smiled easily. Her mom was a thicker version of her, with just a little more tits and ass than her daughter. Candy's dress was quite conservative, to the point that it must have been uncomfortable in the heat. The sleeves were too long, and the collar was comically modest. It was light blue and looked like something from the Gold Rush when this town was founded. Still, he got a hint of her petite figure underneath. His mind rushed with what the dress might be hiding. Her being his niece didn't stop his dirty mind. Or his hardening member.
"We really appreciate it." Su said. The parents looked expectantly at Candy.
"Yeah," she said, pushing a lock of hair back from her forehead.
"Candace?" Her dad admonished.
"I mean, it's very nice, sir." She smiled at him. It wasn't completely fake. Her broad face flashed braced teeth.
Ezra was about to correct her. The only ones who ever called him sir were cashiers. But something about her calling him sir gratified him. Might as well let her if she was going to. God only knew what her parents had told her about how to behave.
Still, the situation was irritating and Ezra felt awkward at her gratitude. "It'll be fine," he grumbled.
Daniel tried to look nonchalant. "Dear, why don't you and Candace go get a cup of coffee so the men can talk?"
"Alright," Su said. "Let's go, Candace." The two of them walked off. Ezra didn't try to hide that he was looking at their asses, not that their modest dress made it easy.
"Ezra-" Daniel began.
"Look, you've already convinced me to do this. Don't sell past the close."
His brother faced him, his blue eyes cold. "I wasn't going to." Ezra didn't believe him. "We've had our differences in the past, and we know you want to support the family." They walked along together, Daniel tall, fit and clean cut while Ezra was stocky, stubbly, and long haired. "She's a well-behaved girl and respectful. She's not going to be bringing boys home or throwing parties."
Ezra scoffed, he actually wanted nothing to do with the family. "Oh I'm sure you've raised her better than that." His sarcasm was palpable.
Daniel ignored his tone. "We raised her like dad raised us. She's a good Christian girl. I know that doesn't mean anything to you, but Su and I know better."
Rolling his eyes, Ezra headed over to one of the benches. "It means plenty to me, just not the same as it does to you. You're a good Christian man yourself." It was kind of nice, being able to take shots at his brother like this. Like old times.
He sighed, following his brother. "You need to take good care of her." When he had watched Candy walking away, he knew
just how
he wanted to take care of her.
Ezra motioned for Daniel to sit on the bench with him. "She's an adult, I'm sure she can manage."
"There are all kinds of temptations for her, even at a nice Christian university like this one. I know she won't... What I'm saying is, she can look out for her own virtue. I'm not afraid of that."
Not liking where this was going, Ezra said. "Then what the hell are you afraid of?"
Daniel looked around. It wasn't so bad to Ezra seeing his sanctimonious brother this uncomfortable. When he spoke his voice was hushed. "You don't still... smoke pot? Or look at porn?"
With a bark of laughter, Ezra said. "So it's not enough to push your girl on me, now you want to tell me what to do in my own house?"
"You shouldn't do it regardless, none of it is godly." Daniel scowled, Ezra's reaction irritating him.
"Well, it might be good for you to give weed and porn a try. It would loosen you up. So you think I'm going to send back some kind of Jezebel when all this is over? Being out on her own is going to affect her a lot more than I would. Maybe she's better off not staying with a bad man like me!"
Daniel ground his teeth. This was clearly not where he anticipated this conversation going. "You just better take care of her gosh darn it. Treat her like one of your own. I don't want her getting into anything bad or I'll-"
"You'll what? Knock another of my teeth out?" Even back when they were kids, Ezra had a mouth on him, and Daniel would meet his words with violence. Awkward as Daniel's blustering was, Ezra knew he could lay him out easily still. He didn't care. "Go fuck yourself. What do you say to that?"
His eyes lit up. "I could still pop you one. You sure as heck would deserve it! If anything happens to her you'll regret it."
"Maybe not. I might even show her a good time, see how sweet Candy actually is."
Daniel's face twisted and Ezra knew he had hit a nerve. But Daniel's eyes darted to the side. Su and Candace were heading their way. He bared his teeth, as if he were biting his harshest words back. "Her name is Candace. She's an adult now. You never had any kids, so you don't know what a dad will do for his girl!"
Su was close enough now that they had to play nice. Still, she could tell something was up. "Dear, is everything ok?" She asked.
"Just having uncivilized man talk," Ezra responded. "I was just assuring my big brother that Candy was perfectly safe with me." His smile was saccharine. It taunted Daniel.
Su laughed. She didn't have much knowledge to go on other than what Daniel said about his brother. "She likes to be called Candace now, if you don't mind." Candy nodded, no less nervous.
"And if I do mind?" He said. It was too awkward even for Su now. Daniel seethed. Candy stared at him wide-eyed.
For a couple of seconds no one said anything. Su forced a laugh. "It sure is hot out here. We should probably get going." Ezra couldn't disagree and they headed toward the parking lot. Su offered to help Daniel carry the luggage. He declined. Ezra offered nothing.

Ezra already had a cigarette going. Why the hell not? He needed something for his nerves after dealing with Daniel. Candy hadn't said anything since she had got in the car. She stared out the window at the field of dry grass rolling by. Tense as he was, Ezra could tell that Candy was wound tight enough to break. Did she feel guilty for imposing on him? In all likelihood she did, though she hadn't had any say in this. According to her family's beliefs, she was Daniel's until she got married. So why feel bad? He decided to have some fun.
"So Candy, you just graduated. I'm surprised your parents let you go to school and didn't homeschool you." His eyes stayed on the road, but he made sure his voice carried the right tone.
"Yes, sir. Trinity high. And I prefer Candace, please."
A point he could needle her on already. Good. "So you're eighteen?" Strictly speaking, it would make him feel a bit better leering at her, though he had no further plans. But he wanted her to think about it. Think about why her uncle might ask her if she's an adult. Ezra was already feeling something obnoxious and dirty inside him.
She cleared her throat. "My birthday was in January, sir. I'm eighteen."
"So it's an all girls school?"
"There were boys too." She wouldn't face him.
"You have a boyfriend? That never works out when one goes away to college, you know. One or both of you find someone you can get your hands on. So do you?"
It took Candy a second to answer. "No, Sir."
"You like girls?"
Even in the other seat, Ezra could feel Candy stiffen. "No, sir. That's a sin."
"Pretty girl like you could get laid no problem in college. Boy or girl." Candy had no idea what to say to that. Ezra continued. "You dress like that all the time?"
"School had uniforms. Button up white shirt and plaid skirt."
"That's a little on the nose, isn't it?" He said.
