Growing up, everyone has that one relative that's their favorite. Admit it. We all have one. We all have that one relative that we are drawn to, click with, or with whom we have great chemistry. Mine was my Uncle Will, seven years younger than Mom, his older sister. He joined the Air Force right out of high school at 18 years old. I didn't really get to know who he was until I was around 6 or 7. We lived in Fort Walton Beach, Florida at the time and Uncle Will's second assignment was at Eglin Air Force Base, about a 25 minute drive from the house. His first assignments were, of course, basic and job specialty training in San Antonio, and overseas to an air base in Germany. Once a month, Mom would get letters and packages from him. He always sent me some souvenirs like shirts, dolls, or hoodies.
During his four years at Eglin, I got to see him quite often. He was over at the house a lot and he was fun to be around. He would read to me, tuck me in on the nights he stayed over at the house, and play in the yard with me but my favorite childhood memories were when we would go riding on his motorcycle. He had a red Honda Goldwing motorcycle and the helmets we wore had a bluetooth and microphone so we could talk back and forth while we road around. Sometimes, we rode over to Destin to Maggie's to eat seafood. It was his favorite seafood restaurant and it became mine as well. He always told Mom where we were going and the route we would be taking just in case there was an emergency or if something happened.
Four years at Eglin came and went real fast, it seemed. When it was time for Will to go to his next duty station, it was off to Japan. I was heartbroken and sad. I didn't understand military commitment but Will promised me we would stay in touch as often as possible and to not be sad. Of course, I cried like a baby when I watched his plane take off from the airport but I knew I would see him again one day. Will was true to his word. He FaceTimed or Skyped me at least three times a week while he was in Japan, usually Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. If he was going to miss a FaceTime or Skype, he would let me know ahead of time so I wouldn't be sad.
It had been two years into his assignment in Japan. He was taking leave and was going to be home for 45 days. Mom told me he would be coming to stay with us and I was overcome with joy. I remember getting ready to go to the airport. Mom had put on jeans and a t-shirt. I wanted to look pretty for Uncle Will so I put on a dark green dress with yellow flowers and some cute matching sandals. I saw him when he walked into baggage claim. I squealed with happiness and ran to jump into his arms. I squeezed him so hard but I don't think he minded because he held me like he was holding onto his favorite teddy bear. Mom walked up to him and gave him a big hug after I let go and landed on my feet.
We drove home and I just listened as he and Mom talked. I was so happy that he was home for a bit so all I could do was smile and gush because my favorite person was in the front passenger seat. While Will was home, he talked about Japan, being in the Air Force, and how happy he was to be home. He helped Mom do some things around the house that were manly tasks and I volunteered to jump in and help just so I could be near him. But what I enjoyed most was when the three of us were in the kitchen cooking. Just as Grandma had taught Mom, I learned to cook from Mom. I was a good cook and I loved to experiment with new recipes. Mom and Will never got sick so I guess they liked my cooking.
On a few occasions, Will and I went riding on his motorcycle. We went to Maggie's a couple of times and we even found some spots where we could have a picnic. I absolutely loved the quality time I was getting to spend with Uncle Will. He was THE MOST important man in my life since I had not seen nor heard from my actual father since I was two years old. Mom didn't know where he was nor did any of his family. He hadn't contact anyone so his disappearance was a mystery.
Will had to go back to Japan but I wasn't as sad this time around because I knew he only had two more years left before he had another stateside assignment. He flew back to Japan and we kept up our communication schedule. It made the next two years fly by, it seemed. What was really awesome about his next military move was that he was coming back to Eglin, but to a different unit. I was ecstatic. On one of the last FaceTime calls we had before he came back stateside, Mom asked him if he wanted to stay with us. We had an extra room that wasn't being used and she was sure I would love him being with us. He accepted. When they hung up, I cried in my Mom's arms and thanked her for being so generous.
"Jody, I know how much you love your Uncle Will and I know how much he loves you. I just thought it would be really nice if you had him here since he has been more like a Dad to you than an uncle."
When Will came back stateside, I had just turned 16 and gotten my license. School had just gotten out for the summer three weeks earlier. Mom let me go to the airport by myself to pick up Uncle Will. Mom had texted Will to let him know I was picking him up because she had some clients to meet with at her job. I had chosen to wear a dress to pick him up the airport. It was black and came to mid-thigh. It was conservative and I loved the way it hugged my body. I also wore some black wedge heels and I had taken care to make sure my hair, make up and perfume were perfect.
I saw Will as he made his way toward me at baggage claim. It was like things were moving in slow motion as he walked toward me. We reached out to each other to hug and it was like time had stood still. It was a nice hug and I was so happy he was home, although it was only for four years. He complimented on how beautiful I looked and I thanked him. He gathered his bags and we walked out to the parking garage to Mom's car. We drove home and we talked like we were Dad and daughter. I even let it slip once when I called him Dad instead of Uncle Will. He just smiled and told me it was OK, that it would be an honor to have me as his daughter.
We got home and I helped him with his stuff and showed him to what was now his new bedroom. Mom and I went all out in decorating it. She bought him all new bedroom furniture, a plant for the corner of the room, a new TV and TV stand, and a large papasan chair for the other corner of the room in case he wanted to sit and read in the evenings. I helped him unpack and we ate lunch. After we ate, we went outside and sat on the front porch in the swing and I laid my head on his shoulder. About 30 minutes later, he told me he was really sleepy from the long flight and that he was going to go lay down and take a nap.
I told him that was fine and that I was going to change and lay down as well. He went into his room, took off his shoes, and laid down to sleep on his new bed. I took off my dress, washed my face, changed into some loose fitting PJ shorts and a t-shirt, and fell asleep on my bed as well. When I woke up, I was a little startled to see Mom laying next to me, facing me. She was gently rubbing my face and forehead.
"Mom, is everything ok?"
"Yes baby. You just looked so peaceful sleeping and I wanted to enjoy that feeling again, like when you were a baby. When you were tiny, I sat and watched you sleep so many times. You were, and still are, a blessing and I love you so very much."
"I love you too Mom, more than anything."
"As much as you love your Uncle Will?"
I got a sheepish grin on my face and giggled. "Yes Mom. As much as I love Uncle Will. You two are everything to me. Today I accidentally let it slip and I called him Dad. I hope it didn't make him feel uncomfortable."
"Yeah he told me and no, it didn't make him feel weird. He loves you Jody, more than you will ever know."
"Is he awake?"
"Yeah, he had to run to the base to see where his new unit was located and also what time he has to be there next Monday."
"OK."
For the next two years, Will, Mom, and I were like a family - a real family. There were many nights we watched TV together, went to the beach, played board games, went to play putt putt, rode go-karts at the go kart track, or just spent time reading. Will and I often went riding on his motorcycle and I think that was my favorite part of him being home. We often talked about life, cracked jokes, or would sing off key really badly to songs on the radio.
I had turned 18 and was heading into my senior year in high school. Uncle Will had one year before he had to leave to go to his next assignment. My body had developed and I had filled out in all the places that boys noticed. Some noticed too much because they were always saying stupid things and their idea of a date was jumping in the sack. I had 36D breasts, not bad by today's standards. I had curves and I had a nice round butt. Sure, I got a lot of attention from the boys at school but the only MAN I wanted to notice me was my Uncle Will. He was the only male in my life that mattered. I loved him with every ounce of my soul.
I had about three weeks before the school year started. As was the tradition every year, Mom and I would take one Saturday before school started and one Saturday during the Christmas holidays to pick out new clothes for me to wear during the year. I was sitting on one corner of my bed texting one of my best girlfriends from school when Mom tapped on the door.
"Hey Mom, what's up?"
"Today is school shopping day. You excited?"
"Yes indeed I am. Are you?"
"Yes darling. I will be ready in about 15 minutes. Does that work for you?'
"OK. I'll be out in a few."
I met Mom in the living room. Will had Staff Duty NCO for 24 hours at his unit. I texted him -
J - Hey Uncle Will. I hope your day isn't sucking too bad.
W - Hey Jody. So far. So good. No issues and no emergencies and I hope it stays that way all day and all night.
J - Me too. Mom and I are going shopping for clothes for me for school. Just wanted you to know where we were.
W - I hope you have fun. And thanks for letting me know.
J - I can't wait to show you what I got.
W - I look forward to it. Does that mean I get a modeling session from my favorite girl?
J - Of course. Am I really your favorite girl?
W - Yes you are love. You always have been.
J - I love spending time with you. You act like you actually like me being around you.
W - I don't. I LOVE spending time with you. Every moment we spend together is time that I cherish.
J - Aaaaawwww. Do you mean that?
