Sohee lay uncomfortably on the exam table, her feet in the stirrups. Even the slightest movement caused the paper under her to make crinkling noises as she waited. She was undressed from the waist down, a paper sheet covering her so that only the doctor would be able to see and examine her when he came in. And when he did, she instantly recognized him, because he was her father in law. "Are you ready?" he asked as he stood next to her.

Suddenly, Sohee realized God had given her the answer. If David's sperm were no good, what about using his father's sperm through artificial insemination? The baby would then have David's genes. But how to get David and his father to agree to this? First, she had to convince David. One Saturday night after dinner she broached the subject with David from a genetic perspective - they wanted children to be genetically related to both of them. Since David had no siblings, the closest male would be his father. After much discussion, he agreed that his father would be the ideal option but how to bring it up? Sohee decided to take a medical approach. When they discussed the issues with David's father, he took a very clinical and pragmatic view and felt that if he could help in any way, he would. The main problem was keeping the identity of the father of the baby a secret.

They were in a tight knit medical and church community. Many people would probably have a hard time accepting that Sohee was carrying her father in law's baby even though it would be through artificial insemination. So they came up with a plan. Sohee would come in to see David's father's partner for a procedure called intrauterine insemination where the sperm was prepped and placed inside her uterus. When she was fertile she would go to the office with a specimen container with David's semen. Once she got there, David's father would take the specimen to the lab but on the way would switch it with his semen. That way, no one else would know who was the true father of the baby. Everyone would assume the baby was David's.

Everyone was on board for the plan and they decided to put the plan in motion the next month. But the one thing that bothered Sohee wasn't the fact that it was her father in law's sperm they were using. She just felt it was such an impersonal and sterile way to conceive. She felt that God intended to create new life out of a man and woman becoming one flesh. And the procedure did have risks. Finally the morning came when her ovulation test turned positive. She called the office to come in for the procedure and was told the doctor she usually saw was out for a family emergency. Given that David's father was the only other infertility specialist, she no choice but to cancel. At the end of the day, she walked upstairs from her clinic to Dr. Moon's office to talk to him. Her father in law listened as she outlined her concerns.

"So what do YOU want to do?" he asked when she was done.

"I really don't know. I've been wrestling with this and the only solution is one I can't ask of you. Though if we think of it from a purely medical perspective, it would be safer and easier and take the same amount of time."

"Tell me honestly, what do you want? And what does David think?"

"I haven't told David because he would not understand. He doesn't even understand why a woman would let a male gynecologist do a pelvic exam. "You know I will do anything for you guys. If this is truly what you think is best, I will help you."

And with that, Sohee found herself laying on the examination table with her feet in the stirrups waiting for her father in law to impregnate her.
