We had been driving for what felt like 3 days but realistically it was only 3 hours. The air conditioning in the van worked for about 12 minutes out of the driveway before it started blasting hot air and seemed to be completely broken. We were all excited for the trip still but way too uncomfortable to have energy.
The van may have been way too hot but it was spacious. We were all sweaty and miserable but we at least had room to spread out. Sam and Phil behind me were moved apart as far as possible so they could spread their legs and mellow out. The side windows in the back had curtains to block out the light and all our luggage and equipment in the back was stacked up high enough to block the back window. Additionally I had installed a curtain between the front and middle row of seats a year ago to block the light so we could sleep in the back on long road trips like this one.
The three of us in the back were trying to sleep. We knew we had another 2 hours of driving and were just hoping it would be over fast.
"Do you boys need a rest stop?" My mother asked. "There's highway washrooms and water fountains ahead."
"Yeah, I want to get out of this damn van" I responded.
We pulled up to stop and all got out of the van. We stretched and shamelessly stared at my mom when she stretched, arching her back and pointing her chest to the sky.
I turned my attention away quickly to not get caught staring and noticed that at the side of the road there were two girls with backpacks trying to hitch a ride.
They looked a little bit older than me, and a lot alike. They were both blonde and wearing ripped jeans and sunglasses. One was wearing a black T-shirt with an animation of a cat skull on it and the other a red T-shirt with a cube printed on it.
They were both really sexy but looked a little dirty from the road. The one in the red t-shirt had noticeably larger breasts and both of them were slim but fit.
The one in the black T-shirt turned her head. She must have seen me in the corner of her eye then dropped her hand and walked straight over to me.
"Hey there. My name is Sara Waters. That's my sister Jamie over there. We're trying to hitch a ride up to Evergreen National Park, I don't suppose you're headed up there and have room for us?"
I was a little astonished at the fact this girl was even talking to me so I stammered and could only say "ughhh...."
Suddenly my mom popped up out of what seemed like nowhere and said "Sure we do! We have exactly two extra seats. The air conditioning is broken but I don't think the boys will mind if you two squeeze in. We're actually headed to Evergreen as well."
I heard another "Shotgun!" and door slamming then turned around to see Sam and jumped in to the front seat. Clearly he didn't realize we were taking on passengers.
Ian and Phil were grinning like Idiots when they saw Sara and Jamie approach the van with me. I introduced them and was about to Offer to get in the backseat with my friends when Jamie pushed past and climbed in between them.
"I get carsick if I don't sit in the back." Jamie said while she fumbled for her seatbelt.
