The mirror didn't lie. Neither did the subtle red marks on her back. With each passing day, the clasp got a little harder to close as well.
It wasn't long before Chloe realized it wasn't her underwear that had suddenly gotten smaller. Rather, it was her who was steadily growing
bigger.
"My, this is quite a surprise," her mom said, watching the girl's struggle to make the ends of her bra meet. "A late spurt, it would seem..."
Chloe's mother wasn't extraordinarily well-endowed, though she did sport an ample pair of round, lovely breasts. They got fuller after childbirth and remained so over the years, keeping a firm shape and still riding high even in her forties. Part of it was certainly due to the few pounds she had gained, which luckily seemed to have spread in a way that flattered rather than burdened her mature, womanly physique.
Her daughter, though? No, she wasn't chubby in the slightest. She was an athletic girl, running track and competing on the high school swim team; it gave her a decidedly lithe figure with a lot of sleek muscle tone. It was honestly surprising that with all the exercise she developed even the bust size she had carried previously, which, right after her eighteenth birthday, seemed to settle on a very respectable B-cup.
Not anymore, her mom thought with a wry smile. Yup, the girl was definitely growing again, her body deciding that for whatever reason it needed to cap off puberty by adding some more weight to her boobs.
"What am I going to do, Mom?" she asked dramatically, the clasp finally latched in place. "I'm like, spilling all over now. Look!"
She twirled around and faced her mother, practically shoving the tightly packed globes in the woman's face. Mom's eyes went wider and she gave out a light chuckle. She could clearly see how the her daughter's expanding bosom was indeed fighting the frilly white garment, as its material was stretched taut over the girl's growing bust.
"Well, we can obviously go and get you a few larger bras," she said, a smile curling the corners of her mouth. "But if I were you, I wouldn't throw the old ones just yet. Trust me, now that your lovelies are all bunched up like this, many more boys will start to notice..."
"Mom!" Chloe cried, a rosy blush coloring her cheeks. "I d-don't need this kind of attention, and definitely not in my senior year! I've barely got time as it is, what with all the classes, training, college exam prep..."
Her mom kept smiling as she gently grabbed the girl's shoulders. "Honey, it wouldn't hurt if you took it easy every once in a while," she said, letting out a soft sigh. "Listen, I know you're looking up to your brother, but me and Dad are already very,
very
proud of you! You know that, do you?"
"Yes, Mom, I know," said Chloe, taking a deep breath which put the focus back on the precarious state of her cleavage. "But either way, this"--she pointed at it--"is getting pretty uncomfortable, and school starts next week, so..."
"Alright, we will go shopping tomorrow. We'll get you fitted into some new bras, and maybe add a swimsuit or two for those last few weeks of summer," her mom promised, then added with the same playful smirk, "unless of course you are fine with wearing your old ones and perhaps showing a bit more skin, huh?"
"MOM!"
The older woman responded with a giggle, then pulled Chloe into a motherly hug. She noted there was definitely more soft flesh between them now. It made her hum wistfully, as she mused how her little Clo was really growing up now. She didn't mind it when the teenager wiggled impatiently, extricating herself from the embrace and politely asking her to leave.
When the door to her bedroom close, Chloe let out a sigh of relief. But she was still rather bemused, as she again turned to the mirror and hefted the curiously inflating spheres on her chest. Boys, huh? -- she thought. Yeah, they sure did notice her. Too bad that none of them were even remotely interesting to the cute strawberry blonde.
Yet there was someone else whom she couldn't easily ignore. Even though she tried, deep down she knew that sooner or later she'd have to do something about him. Whatever it would be, the good news was that she got a good few months to think it through.
After all, Lucas wasn't coming home again until Christmas.

A shiver ran through Chloe's body, as the nipping chill seeped through her turtleneck sweater and leggings. It was supposed to be a quick jaunt through the parking lot but the encroaching winter made it thoroughly unpleasant. She breathed out and watched the small puff of moisture dissolve in the humid air. She thought about running back to Ashley's car, to grab that jacket she told her would only be a burden once they were inside the packed shopping mall.
"You wouldn't be so cold if you put some meat on these bones," teased the shorter, decidedly more curvy brunette, dressed in a similar fashion yet seemingly unbothered by the low temperature. "And I mean in a few different places, not just in your chest!"
"Ha, ha," Chloe replied sarcastically. "Yes, you did notice correctly,
again,
that my boobs are kinda big now. That doesn't mean I gotta put on more weight elsewhere, you know? I'd have to lose it anyway come spring, because my track trainer is a hard-ass and he'd have a fit if --"
"Right, right, I know," Ashley stopped her, flashing a wry smile. "You cannot ruin your perfect figure... Gee, aren't we a bit touchy today?"
The blonde sighed. "Sorry, Ash, it's just a little exhausting. Ever since these things popped out"--she vaguely motioned below her neck--"I've been dealing with, uh, a lot of different comments. It's a bit much sometimes..."
"Oh, I can totally imagine," the other girl said sympathetically. "I mean, I'm not exactly small there myself, and I constantly catch guys who apparently cannot look me straight in the face. It's funny, in a way..."
"It's annoying."
"Well, is it really?" the brunette asked with a smirk, to which her friend responded with a raised eyebrow. "See, Clo, that's why I don't get you sometimes. Yes, I'm with Hayden now, but you know what I do when I notice a cute hunk who's looking at me? I smile, and wink, and maybe even flirt a little, because it's all harmless fun and there's nothing wrong with that. But you? You got
all
the attention now, and you aren't taking advantage! What's the matter? I know for a fact you aren't gay, so --"
"Shut it, Ash," Chloe interrupted her, visibly irritated. "I'm not going to talk about it now, okay?"
Ashley gave an exaggerated shrug. "Alright, suit yourself. I'm still your friend, though, always have and always will be, so don't expect me to stop bugging you anytime soon!"
Chloe let out a heavy sigh, choosing not to comment on Ashley's dogged persistence. She could be a pain in the ass sometimes, especially with her feisty and vivacious presence that could downright annoy the more reserved blonde. In the end, though, this pale, dark-haired, slightly plump but very curvaceous girl had indeed been Chloe's best friend since childhood, so she had long since learned to overlook these minor foibles.
"Okay, here we go," Ashley said, as they stepped on the sidewalk right before the entrance to the mall. "I hope you didn't forget what kinda gifts you're getting for your folks?"
"It's all in here," Chloe replied, brandishing her phone from which she read out loud, "A leather belt and a tie for Dad; a brooch for Mom that'd match the shawl I know he's getting her; and for you, my dear Ashley..."
She snorted a laugh. "Yeah, right! Like we aren't going to buy those gifts separately, eh?... Come on, let's hurry up before everything's gone!"
They walked into the foyer, immediately hitting the seasonal bustle with all its noise and crowds. It was about two weeks before Christmas and the stores were predictably overrun by anxious shoppers. Chloe and Ashley would brave this chaos over the next two hours, ticking off many items from their respective lists, as they hauled around increasingly more numerous and heavier bags.
Eventually, they decided to take a break and sit down in a cozy coffee shop. A table had just freed up in the corner and they seized upon it immediately, dropping their bags with deep sighs of relief before queuing up at the barista. A few minutes later they returned, along with two peppermint mochas, one small slice of cake for Ashley, and much wider smiles on both their faces.
"Guess what, I think I'm almost done," said the brunette, taking a bite and scrolling through her phone. "There doesn't seem to be any toy store here, so I'll have to go somewhere else to find that action figure for my little brother. So now it's just the lingerie store, to get something that Hayden will enjoy taking off of me... Hmm, what do you think? Should I go for a dark or light set? And what style? There are so many choices!"
Chloe rolled her eyes. "Yeah, let's just say that
these
problems you'll be solving yourself," she said pointedly. "I don't wanna set foot in any place with underwear for, like, the next five years."
"Ah, yes, I 'member," Ashley said, letting out a furtive giggle. "You were always complaining how you had to take measurements for a new bra, again."
"Yup, basically every month," Chloe said with a sigh. "I got quite a collection now."
The other girl pondered something for a moment, before an impish grin curled her glossy dark lips. "Well, sure, but do you have enough bras of the
sexy
kind?"
"Huh...?"
"Oh, you know," she teased her friend further. "One day, you might grow up and decide that boys don't actually have cooties. And when that happens, you'll be glad to have something from Victoria's Secret to make a guy's jaw drop!"
The blonde sighed into her cup. "This again?"
"Yes, bestie, this again," Ashley said, giving her an almost solemn nod. Her demeanor changed quite suddenly, and she looked at her friend with concern in her eyes. "Tell me, what's going on? You didn't go out with anyone for like -- geez, I don't even know how long! Gotta be months now, since you broke up with Tyler... I'm starting to get a little worried here, you know?"
"It's nothing," Chloe replied instantly.
"Okay," Ashley took a little more time to add, "but is it also
no one?"
