Dad walked me out of the office. The stares from his co-workers were blatant as my cheeks flamed. Dad had his arm around my waist, as we walked to the elevator. He didn't say a word until the elevator opened and I stepped in.
Leaning forward, he said, "Don't worry, they don't know who you are."
He gave me a small kiss on the lips. I didn't kiss him back. He didn't seem bothered by it. I assume he thought I was just embarrassed, but it was because he had hurt my feelings. I knew that it was best that they didn't know that I was his daughter. That would have been much too hard for us to explain, should we have been confronted. It was strange being relieved that they weren't aware of the nature of our relationship, but also being hurt because they didn't know I was his daughter. Had he told anyone he even had a daughter?
I took the elevator back to the first floor and went home, not sure what to do for the rest of the day. We had agreed we would talk that night over dinner. Dad was going to pick me up and take me out. He said it was vital to discuss the situation before we went any further, but he didn't trust himself to keep his hands off of me if we met privately.
I was more than a little irritated. After all the times he had the chance to be but wasn't, now he was rational when I didn't want him to be. I wanted him to react emotionally. He wouldn't allow himself to act on his sexual desire and I lamented his self-control. The only reason I conceded to a public meeting was due to him refusing to do this any other way.
I spent the whole day anxiously awaiting our date. I had decided to change into something else, though not knowing where we were going, I wasn't sure what to wear. I texted him when I knew he was off work. He had said he had to stop by the house to change. I knew it would be over an hour before he was to pick me up.
Where are we going? I don't know what to wear.
Hate to do this. Something came up. Sorry.
That sounded more like him, second-guessing and avoiding me. I was angry. He promised me we would talk and he wouldn't go on as if nothing happened.
Really? You said you wouldn't do this.
We'll talk, I promise.
I threw my phone on my bed. I was standing in front of my closet, still wrapped in my towel, staring at my clothes. I wasn't going to let him do this again. I pulled out a pair of skinny jeans and a top. Fancy and sexy was not what I was trying. I wanted comfortable while I tore my father a new asshole.
Getting dressed quickly, I was out the door in less than ten minutes. It took me about 40 minutes to get to my destination. When I pulled up, I saw a car I did not recognize in the driveway. I would have thought it was my dad's if it weren't for the fact that he had always parked in the garage and that the car was a pink Miata. Way too ostentatious for him.
I walked up to the door, trying the handle before pulling out my keys and unlocking the door. The knowledge that he had a woman within the walls of his house, behind a locked door, burned through me. I walked in quietly, straining my ears to hear anything. Voices were coming from the dining room.
"βhaven't touched a thing, are you sure you are alright?" an unknown feminine voice said.
"I'm fine." I heard my father say.
I walked toward the conversation, stepping into the dining room, a room we had never used while I had been living there. My father sat across from an attractive woman. They sat encased in dim lighting, with lit candles between them on the table. Neither had noticed my presence, as they ate the food in front of them.
They were on a date.
"You have got to be kidding me," I said.
My dad jumped out of his chair.
"Lilith! What are you doing here?"
The woman looked at me eagerly.
"Lilith? This is your daughter?" she asked.
I rolled my eyes and made my way to the exit, but my dad had caught me in the hallway, not even halfway to the front door.
"I can explain," he whispered.
"I don't care about any explanations,
Dad
." I didn't bother lowering my voice.
He flinched.
He continued, anyway, "She and I have been dating sinceβsince you moved out. I was going to tell you tonight, but she surprised me with this." He waved his hand in the direction of the dining room.
"Why didn't you tell me this afternoon after weβ"
"Is everything okay out here?" the woman interrupted, peeking her head around the corner.
I turned to glare at her. What I saw made me angrier. Now that I was looking at her closely enough, I noticed that she resembled me. Or at least, how I looked before I dyed and straightened my hair. She wasn't my doppelganger, but if we told a stranger we were sisters, they'd believe us. I shook my arm out of my father's grip and smiled at her.
"Everything is fine," I said, sweetly. "I didn't mean to intrude on your date."
She smiled back and walked forward holding out her hand. I took it.
"Not an intrusion at all! I am so glad I finally get to meet you. Your dad talks about you all the time," she said. "My name is Janey."
"Oh, are you the florist?"
She looked at me, confused.
"I'm in advertising."
I tried to look embarrassed.
"Oh, my bad, I got you mixed up with someone else."
She glanced at my dad, then back at me, pursing her lips.
"No problem," she said, curtly.
I walked past her and into the kitchen, calling behind me "Mind if I join you? I haven't eaten all day."
Without an answer, as loudly as I could, I began serving myself with the food left on the stove and island countertop, before going into the dining room and sitting down. They were still standing, as I began to eat. Slowly, Janey shifted over and sat in her chair. My dad didn't move.
"Lilith, I'm not sure that's a good idea," he said.
"Don't be ridiculous. Jamie doesn't mind, do you?" I smiled at Janey, intentionally saying the wrong name.
She smiled back, but I could tell it was fake.
"It's Janey," the tone in Dad's voice expressed irritation.
"Oh, I'm sorry, it gets hard to remember sometimes," I said to her.
"Lilith, stop that," he demanded. "I know what you're trying to do."
I ignored him, but his words just made me even angrier. If he wanted to continue what we had started in his office, he wouldn't care that I was trying to make Janey think he was seeing more than one woman. If he wanted to continue what we had started, he wouldn't have blown me off to have a date with her. Sure, maybe I was acting immature, but we had crossed a line that we couldn't go back over, and instead of being honest with me, Dad ditched me for someone who looked a hell of a lot like me. When I realized that he had canceled to be on a date with someone else, I realized that he wanted to meet in public because he was going to tell me he had changed his mind. Otherwise, he would have made that conversation the priority, instead of this woman. I was furious and devastated.
I turned back to Janey, stuffing a carrot into my mouth.
"Did you make this?" I asked, with my mouth still full.
"Yes," she replied. "I wanted to surprise your father with a nice dinner."
"Oh," I said thoughtfully, "I guess you didn't realize he doesn't like carrots."
