An entire week had passed with Dalton now home. Work picked up for Foster and now he found himself with fifteen unanswered emails, a growing grocery list from Kayla, and two voice mails he still hadn't even listened to. He had contacted Tara over a week ago. They texted back and forth a few times and since then she's tried to reach out in several forms and he just didn't have time to reply to her either. By the time he walked through the door at the end of his work day, Dalton was ready to have his dad all to himself. Kayla had been a life saver. The house was always picked up and dinner was always ready. The first two days, he walked through the door with fast food to get a hurt expression from Kayla when she saw the bags. So, he stopped picking up dinner which saved him 30-45 minutes a day.
He and Kayla hadn't discussed their movie night and nothing similar had happened again. Joslynn had been staying at her boyfriend's house more often now, which seemed to make Kayla a little sad. When the second week hit, Foster knew he was going to need to give Kayla a break. He walked through the front door after a short Friday, equally as ready for a break.
"Hey Kayla. Is Dalton down for a nap?" he asked, seeing her sitting on the couch with her tan legs crossed, reading a book. She nodded, and then looked back down at her book. He reached for his wallet and pulled out some cash he had been setting aside for her.
"I'm sorry it took me two weeks to pay you. I guess we didn't discuss time of pay. I'm also sorry I haven't thanked you enough this week. You came in here and saved us. I don't know what I would have done without you, Kayla."
She wiggled in her seat and blushed, looking up at him. "It's really been my pleasure. I enjoy Dalton. Thank you, Foster."
"Well, I wanted to give you some time off. Go do whatever you want over the weekend. If you could just be back here Tuesday, that would be great!" he said. Foster's mom had been begging to spend some time with Dalton, and he had planned a guys weekend in the mountains to unwind as well.
Kayla looked a little bummed for a second, but then nodded and smiled. "Is it OK if I stay here? I mean...at night? I don't really have anywhere else to stay." she asked.
"Kayla, I asked you to move in here so this is your place too. You have a key. You're welcome here anytime." she surprised him by jumping up and giving him a hug. Her breasts pressed against his chest and her silky hair swept over his arm, giving him a chill that traveled all the way down into the pit of his stomach.
"Thanks, Foster." she whispered in his ear, before releasing him to run back and check on Dalton.
His mom picked up Dalton before dinner. "Ohhhh little man," she cooed, hugging Dalton up in her arms. "I have waited so long for grandma time! Are you ready for Chuck E. Cheese?" she asked. Dalton's eyes lit up and he started bouncing all over the house.
"So when is she coming back home, Foster?" his mom asked. "I just don't understand a mom up and leaving this wonderful little bundle." she added, patting Dalton on the head.
"The last time I heard from her, she was still at the wellness center but contemplating a move where she could find herself. I guess she's wanting a whole new start without us. At least that's the way it sounds to me." Foster answered sadly.
"Oh well, honey. You're doing just fine here. Just do the best you can, like you have been. We can't control other people's actions." His mom always gave answers like that. The kind that you could find on a Pinterest quote board. More than likely where she found them herself.
Foster's phone pinged for a text, and he scooped his phone out of his pocket after closing the door behind his mom and Dalton.

Hey man, can't make guys weekend. Honey-do list keeping me home.
"Shit!" Foster thought. He sent out a group text checking on the rest of the guys. All out. Sick kids, wife is leaving for the weekend, have to work. He threw the phone onto the couch. Frustrated and very disappointed, he slammed out of the back door in hopes that the fresh air would help. Kayla was listening to music while her hair was fanned out on a beach towel, her skin glowing with tanning oil. Seeing her like that was the last thing he needed, especially in an empty house.
He faintly heard his phone ringing through the screen door. Running inside, he hopped over the couch and grabbed it. "Saved by the bell," he thought to himself.
"Hello?" he answered breathlessly. He hadn't even bothered to look on the name before answering, but smiled at the sound of Tara's voice.
"Catch ya jacking off again?" she asked, giggling.
"Tara! Hey! No, I ran across the house to catch you." he laughed.
"My hero." she sighed melodramatically.
Foster chuckled. "What can I do for ya, my lady?"
"Well, that's a loaded question. However, what I called for is...I'm coming into town this weekend for a birthday dinner on Sunday. I left two hours ago and thought I'd see if you had plans this weekend."
"You're kidding, right?" he gasped.
"Yeah, you caught me. I just wanted to fuck with you." she answered sarcastically. "No!! I'm not kidding! You had said in your last email that your wife was gone for awhile. I thought maybe it would be safe for me to swoop in and at least give you a hug if nothing else. But, what I'm really thinking is..."
"BOOBY BAR." they both yelled in unison, and then burst into laughter. Foster quieted, remembering Kayla was just outside.
"Yes! Guys weekend was just canceled on me and mom has Dalton." he said, excited.
"Well it's nice to know you can answer the guys back when they text you to plan a guys weekend. You ass! I've been trying to get a hold of you for days!" she chided.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry. Work was crazy this week and guys weekend was planned with most of the guys I see everyday at work. I never mean to ignore you." he apologized.
"Oh stop! I know that. I was giving you shit. So I'm stay... at the Holi... Inn. When I get che... in and ch..., I'll call you." she was cutting in and out of service.
