Tyler was sitting in the back seat of his dad's car. They were on the way to the park for Tyler's baseball game. The team had qualified for the semi-finals and Tyler could barely contain his excitement. "Son, I just want you to know that whatever happens today, I'm very proud of you." Tyler's dad looked back at him in the rear-view mirror beaming with pride. Tyler was about to say something to his dad when a pair of headlights appeared in front of them. The sound of screeching tires filled the air as the other vehicle hurtled into them. Just as they were about to collide, Tyler woke up in a cold sweat, shouting out for his dad. His breathing was shallow and rapid as he looked around his dark room, trying to get his bearings. He saw the glow of his clock in the darkness, reading 5:30am. He rubbed his face in his hands and took a moment to calm down.
It was always the same nightmare for the past seven years, ever since his dad died in the car crash. A drunk driver lost control of their vehicle and slammed into them. His dad died on impact and a piece of glass lodged itself into Tyler's right arm, severing his muscle. The injury hadn't been life threatening, but he lost some feeling in his arm. He wouldn't be able to play baseball again and now had a scar run down his arm. His bedroom door opened and his younger sister, Megan, walked in, rubbing her eyes.
"Hey, are you ok? You banged against the wall in your sleep and woke me up."
"Oh, sorry. I'm... ok." Megan sat down on the side of his bed.
"Are you sure? You don't sound ok." She ruffled his hair and stared at his face. "It was that dream about dad again, wasn't it?" Tyler nodded and Megan let out a yawn.
"Yeah, I'm sorry for waking you. I know you have a big day at school today." He gave her a reassuring smile and hugged her. "Go back to bed, I'll be ok." Megan kissed his cheek and went back to her room. Tyler lied back down on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He knew he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. He got out of bed and walked down to the kitchen. He opened the fridge and grabbed everything he would need to cook breakfast. It had become a daily routine for him to make breakfast for his family. His mom fell into a deep depression after his dad died and Tyler took it upon himself to take care of cooking and cleaning in the household. He turned on the coffee machine as he started to fry up an omelet and some pancakes. He heard footsteps coming down the stairs and reached for a mug to set down by the machine.
His oldest sister, Meredith, walked into the kitchen, stifling a yawn and grabbing the mug off the counter and pouring herself some coffee. She stood just a little shorter than Tyler. She was wearing a black pinstripe suit with black open-toed heels with her dark red hair pulled into a bun. At 28, she interned as an assistant in a law office and was working towards becoming a lawyer in her own right. She was required to work long hours and always showed up early. It had become such a routine that Tyler always knew she would be the first one down in the morning and always had coffee ready for her. She was always in such a rush that she never stayed to eat breakfast, but Tyler wasn't going to let that slide this morning.
"Good morning, Meri." Tyler flipped the omelet in the pan over to allow it more time to cook.
"Hey Ty, have you seen my keys? I really need to get to the office." Tyler slid the omelet out of the pan and onto a plate.
"Yeah, I've got them right here." He jingled her keys and smirked at his sister. She went to grab them from him but he jerked them away and handed her the plate.
"The office is only a twenty-minute drive from here and you have enough time to eat. You're always rushing around like a chicken with its head cut off. You need to slow down every now and then. Please, sit down and eat." He stared into her bright green eyes and noted a slight reddening of her cheeks. She sighed and sat down at the kitchen table.
"Fine, I guess it wouldn't hurt to have breakfast before leaving." Tyler smiled and went back to the stove. He started mixing pancake batter as Meredith ate her breakfast. "This is really good. You even remembered that I like hot sauce cooked into it."
"Yeah, I know dad used to make unique breakfasts for each of us. He taught me what everyone liked before..." Tyler went silent as his nightmare came back to him and he tried to push it out of his mind. Meredith paused mid-bite and looked up at Tyler. She saw him standing frozen in place. She could only imagine what was running through his mind. She got out of her chair and came up behind him, hugging him tight.
