"Lily!" Laura rushed from door to door looking for her daughter, who should definitely be ready by now.
Lily, however, was definitely not ready. She and her best friend Emma were still giggling on her bed, fresh from taking showers and not even clothed.
"There you girls are!" Laura sighed, "we need to get you ready, family's already arriving."
Lily would have thought her mom was exaggerating but right on time they all heard the familiar sound of her grandfather's classic car horn in their driveway.
"Your uncles are already here, come on, come on." Laura shooed them off the bed and went to Lily's bathroom to grab a hairbrush, only to swing back around and quickly help wring out their brunette locks.
If Laura squinted her eyes she might not even be able to tell which one she gave birth to, that's how alike and close Lily and Emma were, ever since they were little girls. Now her precious girls were full-grown adults and ready to start their lives. For all she knew, tonight would be one of the last times their family would be able to have a get-together like this.
"Mom? Are you okay?" Lily turned around to embrace her mother and Emma joined, they gave Laura a quick squeeze before she brushed them off.
"I'm fine, just being a little sentimental, I suppose. Now, you're not even dressed yet, have you decided what you're wearing tonight?" Laura huffed, but she knew the girls wouldn't think she was seriously chastising them, she could never be so cold.
"Can't we just go down like this?" Emma whined.
Even Laura laughed at this, "don't be silly, we promised dinner and a show! You need to put on a show!" Laura began to shuffle towards the door, "now hurry up girls, your brother and father can only entertain for so long."
Lily watched her mom grimace and leave before she sprang into action, shuffling through her closet until she found exactly what she was looking for. "Emmayyyyy...." Lily whispered in awe of what she found.
"Oh my gosh, Lily! That's perfect!"
The girls quickly helped each other get dressed before joining the party downstairs.
Downstairs, Uncle Max, Uncle Gary, and Gary's wife, Ellen, were all sitting in the living room listening to Henry's latest work tale.
"I had pulled her over for her tail light, and keep in mind- I didn't know what she looked like. She rolls down the window, my jaw drops, almost as gorgeous as Laura." Henry pulled his wife Laura into a half embrace while he was still seated.
"Oh stop it, Henry!" Laura's laugh filled the room.
"No, I'm serious. So I say, 'sorry ma'am, did you know your tail light is out?' She tells me, 'of course not officer, I'll get that checked out right away.' So I give her a warning and tell her to show that to the next officer that pulls her over before she gets it fixed."
"But!" Jonas interrupts his dad's story, Henry lets out a chuckle but lets his son continue. "But what she didn't know was he put the wrong date on the warning. So it says she got it a week ago."
Their audience of uncles and aunts knew where this was going, as it was Henry's oldest trick in the book, and also how he had met Jonas and Lily's mother, Laura. Nevertheless, they "oohed" and "awed" as Jonas narrated.
"Then, Dad tells me on the radio, 'hey Henry, check out the Ford coming your way. Their tail light is out.' And sure enough, the tail light is out so I pull her over. And she shows me her warning, but at the time I didn't even know it was wrong. I told her, 'Miss this was given to you a week ago,' and I show her the date. I tell her I'm going to have to fine her for not fixing it. She begs me not to, asks if there's anything else she can do, and then I realized. She really means anything, so then-" Jonas stopped in his tracks as he looked at the two beauties stepping down the stairs, making their way to the living room.
"Wow..." Jonas lets out breathlessly, instantly needing to adjust his jeans.
Laura runs up to the girls, followed by Henry's brothers Max and Gary, and Aunt Ellen.
"I can't believe this is what you chose to wear," Laura was in awe at the choice, it was the same thing she wore when she was newly introduced to Henry's family.
Uncle Gary laughed, "this takes me back! You two are gorgeous, and you look just like your mom, Lily!"
Uncle Max, only a decade older than Lily and Emma gave them a tight hug, "my little girls, all grown up!"
Henry came over and pulled the girls towards him, "your little girls? Max, they're all mine!"
At this time Laura started guiding the guests to the dining room and Henry pulled the girls aside.
