The captain assembled the company in a large hanger and had all the men stand at attention.
"We have need of five good men. I could just pick the men that I'd feel would be best for the job except there's a very good chance none of you will make it back alive. Because of that, I want to give you all the opportunity to volunteer. This mission is of vital importance. It must be carried out. However, as stated earlier, there is every likelihood that whoever goes will not be able to make it back. If I can't get at least five men, I will pick. I'll give you all until 0800 and then I need your answers."
"I volunteer." said a voice.
"Who said that?"
A young private stepped out of line. "I did, sir. I volunteer."
The captain walked over to him and looked the young man over. "How old are you, son?"
"19, sir."
The captain nodded. "Alright. Go see the lieutenant. You're dismissed until tomorrow. Say you're goodbyes if you have any."
"Yes, sir."
The captain watched as the young man marched off. He had just sent him to his death and he knew it. That was the price of having brass. The captain turned to the others. "Anyone else?"
There was silence and a lot of nervous looks. They all knew what it meant to be captured by the enemy. Usually, no quarter was given. If you died fighting to your last breath, they would only cut off your head as a trophy. If you surrendered they would torture you to death for fun, and then hack what was left of you to pieces to feed their animals.
"Alright. Well, like I said, you all have until tomorrow at 0800 to make up your minds. I need four more men. Dismissed."
...
Don was taken off this normal schedule of duties. This wasn't his normal off day so he didn't have anything immediately planned. The only thing he could think to do was actually go say goodbye.
He sat on a bench outside the barracks and looked down at his boots. Would he be able to do it? Just an hour earlier he would have said she could wait in that damn hotel until the war ended but now he was starting to think that he'd have to just go on down there and see her.
"Dude, what have you done?" said a voice as a hand came to his shoulder. Tom Black sat down next to him. Don looked over at him with surprise. Of all the people to express concern over Don's wellbeing, Tom was not one of them.
"My country needs me. That's why I signed up."
"You can still go change your mind."
"No I can't. I already signed the forms."
"You did? Do you know where you're going?"
"No. Doesn't matter. I'll go where they tell me to go and do what they tell me to do. What do you care anyway?"
"Yeah, I shouldn't care. But I do, man."
"Well, don't think I did this to get away from you. I have my own reasons."
"No, man, I didn't say that."
"And stop getting all mushy on me."
"I'm not. But listen, all that stuff I did. I did it to try to toughen you up."
"You don't have to apologize."
"Look, man. I know maybe it seemed to you like I was a jerk but ..."
"And now you're turning into a woman."
"I was doing it to protect you. If I didn't bully you one of the other guys would have."
"Yeah, cause that's real mature."
"Whatever man. I'm just coming to make peace with you."
"Fine. Peace. You done? I got goodbyes to give."
"Yeah, I'm done. Go. Go say your goodbyes."
Don didn't move.
"Hey, private. On your feet. That's an order."
"Sorry corporal. Until I ship out tomorrow, I don't have to obey your orders or anyone's orders. On top of that the Mps can't even arrest me."
"Shit! Really?"
"Really, really."
"So this is really serious."
"Yeah. Must be."
Don got to his feet. "Do you have any family?" he asked.
Tom nodded.
"I don't know if that makes you lucky or unlucky." Don said and then walked off.
...
Just off base there was a hotel. There was a lot of activity happing this day. Don walked up to the front desk and asked which room Donna Mallory was staying in.
"And you are?"
Don held his id out for her to see.
"Thank you, Mr. Mallory. She's in 204. Shall I call up to announce you?"
"No, thank you."
Only the second floor. Instead of using the elevator, he took the stairs. Before knocking he checked his uniform. Everything seemed ok but he didn't knock. He was just standing there in the hallway.
After he'd been standing out there for something like half an hour rehearsing what he wanted to say in his head, a navy officer came down the hall with three daisies in his hand. He walked right up to room 204 and knocked without even paying any attention to Don.
The door opened and the officer asked the woman if she was ready to go to lunch with him. Don heard Donna say she was but before anything could happen, Don pushed the officer into the room from behind. Donna yelled out in a frightened "yiah" and the officer almost fell down face first but got his balance and turned around in a fighting stance.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Don said as he slammed the door behind him.
The officer saw that it was only a lowly private and put his hands down and straightened his back. "That's assaulting an officer, private. You better be able to explain yourself." the officer said while putting his finger in Don's face.
Don quickly punched the officer in his exposed gut with one hand, kicked him off balance and grabbed that finger so he could twist it.
"I asked you a question, maggot. What the hell are you doing in here?"
"Donny, what are you doing?" Donna yelled.
"Shut up you whore." Then he turned his attention to the officer. "You want to date her. Huh?" he asked as he slapped the officer across the face.
"You're dead." the officer said with pain in his voice even as he was being forced to the ground by Don's grip. "You're going to prison. Your career is over."
"I asked you a fucking question." Don said and then punched the officer in the face. "Are you fucking deaf?" Don punched him again and blood was drawn. "What the hell are you doing in here?"
"Donny, please stop." Donna said as she came to him. He pushed her away and then pointed to tell her to sit.
"Now, worm, the way I see it, I could just kill you or maybe I'll go to command and let them know what kind of extra curricular activities you're getting up to." Don said.
"You're the one who's in deep shit, private."
"You make sure to give them my name. Donald Mallory. That's Donna Mallory you were about to take out. Did you know that? Huh? HUH?"
The officer's eyes grew wide.
"Oh, now he gets it." Don said. Then he turned to the woman. "And you shut your damn trap. I'll get to you later."
Don released the officer and the man got to his feet. Don went to the door and opened it and then pointed to the hallway. The officer corrected his uniform and then walked out with his head high. "I'll remember that name." he said as he looked over at the woman in disgust. "I'm going to make your career a living hell."
"You just go and try." Don said and slammed the door.
A moment passed and then Don turned to the woman who looked very afraid.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he asked her.
"Waiting for you to come see me."
"Did you not get the message that I didn't want you here?"
"No. I've been here for weeks and you've only ignored me."
"Yeah, that was me sending you the message that I didn't want you here. And who the hell was that guy?"
