Chapter Five

The school grounds were abuzz when Ellie wandered through the gates, her school bag slung over her shoulder. There were large groups everywhere huddled around their phones, excitedly commenting and reacting to what they were watching. Was there some sort of game on last night? Had there been a fight at school?

"Hey Ellie!"

Ellie turned and there was Olivia walking towards her, God! Could she have that skirt any shorter?!, with two other girls flanking her. Ellie rushed up to give her a welcome hug. Then saw Olivia turning about to look around. Ellie, noticed it too.

The yard noise had dropped away to little more than a few whispers and when Ellie turned to look, it seemed everyone had turned to stare at her. No not her, she realised, they were looking at the two girls next to Olivia. Their expressions were a mix of shock, amusement and awe.

What scandal had she missed involving her friends Ruby and Susan? She wondered.

Olivia took in the yard and then looked back to her two embarrassed friends before acting. She hurried the girls along, glaring at a few boys who gawked for too long and pushed her way past a few others. The noise level immediately rose again to new heights in their wake.

They found an empty classroom and ducked inside.

"What the fuck was that all about?!" Olivia demanded as soon as the door shut.

"You haven't seen the Youtube video then?" Susan asked sheepishly.

"Or the Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat posts too! It's everywhere Liv! We're in deep trouble" Ruby cried, crutching at Olivia's arm imploringly.

"I don't understand. What is it I haven't seen?! This is what happens when you can't find a charger one night! Show me what I've missed."

Susan opened her phone and showed Olivia with Ellie looking over her shoulder.

It was a movie scene. Well it looked like a movie scene at first but this was obviously filmed using a phone from a distance. One huge man took on a whole group of men in a blur of punches, kicks, strikes and stabs. Some of the men even had billiard cues and knives but the larger man systematically broke them like waves against a rock. Ellie had never seen anything like it. It was frightening to watch how skilled and quick this man was, how powerful he was, how amazing he was... Worst of all, Ellie had a strong feeling she knew him.

The footage, showed the man hurl one of his attackers like a toy across the room to smash into another man. Ellie looked at the others girls as they watched in awe, Ruby even had one hand up her skirt. Ellie, raised her eyebrows and adjusted her glasses before turning back to watch when Olivia gasped.

"Is that you?! It is!" Olivia said in shock.

Ellie saw the man walking with his arms around two girls towards the camera. It was definitely Ruby and Susan but that wasn't what made her gasp in surprise -- the man was her Dad. It was Jarrod!

"I know right!" Olivia said, turning to Ellie.

They watched the last few seconds as the man walked out with the girls before stopping the movie, rewinding to when the girls were clearly shown and pausing.

"Yep no hiding from that girls!" Olivia sighed, collapsing in a chair.

"What are we going to do? Everyone has seen it! We were out in a pub!" Ruby declared, pacing.

"You're both eighteen, aren't you?! You had that awesome party last month." Ellie chipped in reassuringly.

"Yes, but it was a school night" Susan explained.

"Hey weren't you hanging around that Deadsie wanker the guy just destroyed! Aren't you scared he and his gang will come after you?!" Ellie blurted. Olivia gave her a kick to shut up and Ellie quickly apologised.

"Well we weren't with him really. We were just stringing him along for free drinks and gifts." Ruby explained.

"He was pretty generous" Susan added

"But recently he started to get all violent and demand more. I think he wanted us to share ourselves around the gang or something so we slipped out that night. We knew we had made a mistake. Deadsie wasn't going to take no for an answer any more and he told us that if we didn't fuck him by the end of the night he was going to get the whole gang to rape us right there on the dancefloor. When he was taking drugs, we slipped out to the front bar. If it wasn't for Jarrod, we would have been in trouble!" Ruby finished.

"Jarrod said we were under his protection" Susan smiled at Olivia sheepishly.

Olivia grinned, "Sounds like quite a guy!" Ruby and Susan both sighed and then turned to each other nodding energetically with big smiles.

"Ellie!!!" Olivia said, with a mock smile of surprise and shock.

Ellie, looked down embarrassed. "I'm just curious."

"Actually, so am I!" Olivia declared, "Tell us the gory details!" she smiled dragging Ruby and Susan down into the chair next to her.

"He was amazing!" Susan finished the sentence for her.

"He was, wasn't he?!" Ruby shared a smile with Susan.

"He looked like he could've just taken you and done anything he wanted and there wouldn't be a person in the world who could stop him!" Olivia said wide-eyed while Ellie hovered on the outside of the group unsure whether she should be listening to this conversation but desperately eager to learn more.

"He probably could have but he let us take the lead!" Ruby said with a giggle.

"Tell me everything!" Olivia implored.

Susan and Ruby spent the next twenty minutes going through every little detail. On the bike ride home, in the driveway, on the couch and when they started coming out in costumes.

Ellie felt all her anger flush away immediately and panic kicked in.

Jarrod pulled up to the gate of the clubhouse. The street was dark. None of the factory buildings or houses in the street showed any signs of life other than the bikie compound. Two spotlights lit the driveway leading up to the roller door but beyond the walls it was eerily quiet.

At this time of night, he remembered it to be a hive of activity. Laughter, swearing and bikes revving and roaring was the normal course of events at this stage as members enjoyed a beer and shared stories. Tonight though, only the distant hum of freeway traffic broke the silence.

Regardless it did feel good to be in full leathers again, with his devil faced helmet, leather pants, boots and club jacket. The emblem of the gang, a flaming devil riding a Harley, was emblazed on the back of his jacket and was still painted on the spiked metal doors before him. It was great to be back but felt a little trepidation to what had changed in his absence.

He had spent most of the afternoon at the police station going over his statement. They had arrived just after Ellie left for school but it was nice to see that the officers that had arrived were familiar faces. By the end, he was free to go and they spent an hour or so sharing a drink, reminiscing about old times at clubhouse parties.

Jarrod pushed the intercom button and announced his arrival. After what seemed like minutes, some young prospect answered and after a few sceptical questions, eventually gathered a group to open the gate. The prospects were a bunch of pimple-faced kids playing at being tough. That was before he took off his helmet. He couldn't help but smirk when saw them suddenly flick from cool bravado to a mad scramble, their faces awash with fear when realisation fully dawned on their faces that he ACTUALLY WAS. It's Jarrod, the Butcher of Baronia.

They pulled aside the gate and he raced through with a roar. Jarrod noticed that the garage was full of Harley-Davidsons of all makes and years. There were hundreds of them but still, only half the garage was filled. The chapter must have left their bikes behind and taken cars. Since when would they go out on mass in cars? Things weren't right around here.

"Look after it for me" Jarrod instructed the group and then proceeded to the clubhouse proper. A Prospect ran to keep up and seemed eager to talk but Jarrod pulled him up short with a disapproving gaze before stepping through the door into the clubhouse.

The bar area had gone to the shitter! Jarrod scanned the large space. The long wooden bar remained the same but where were all the drinks stacked behind it and why were the stools so old and broken? The couches were stained and torn too and one of the mirrors on the side dancefloor, closest to the central dance pole, was badly cracked. The carpet was torn and stained too, and the place smelled worse than the prison dunnies! Where was the stereo? Where was the photos? Where was the honour board?

Jarrod stepped further into the room to pick his way past the furniture. He noticed old food with mould just sitting around on the floor and tables, and was that vomit on the carpet? It was fucking disgusting! Maybe living in the sterile prison environment and coming home to a clean and organised home had tainted his perspective somewhat but Jarrod could never remember the clubhouse ever being left to get this this state. Where was Old Mike?

Jarrod approached the bar and saw a bottle of Bourbon sitting just out of reach. He leaned over and opened it, taking a long swig.

Jarrod could just make the clink of dishes being washed behind the bar in the kitchen area.

"Mike! Mike! Where are you, you old bastard!?" Jarrod called towards the door behind the bar.

The sounds stopped and after a moment the door slowly edged open.

"Who's there?" A woman stepped out into the bar area, wiping her hands on a tea towel. She had her blond hair pulled back in a long ponytail, an undersized low-cut tight singlet revealed large full breasts and skin-tight denim jeans revealed long toned legs. One of her arms had a tattoo sleeve depicting skulls, roses and thorns. On her cheek, she had a large bruise but it did nothing to detract from her light green eyes.

He knew her instantly.

"Ava?!"

Ava's scowl changed to elation in a heartbeat. "Jarrod! Jarrod! Is it really you?!"

She darted around the bar and ran to wrap him up in a tight hug. Jarrod beamed down at her as she lifted her head up to reveal tear-filled eyes.

"Thank God you're back!"

"Let's have a drink to celebrate!" she said grabbing two bottle of spirits and pulling out a stool for him to sit at. Jarrod climbed up on the stool and accepted the glass once Ava had poured it.

"To old flames!" she winked.

Jarrod chuckled and downed his drink with Ava who immediately poured another.

"I thought you had left the Riders Av? What are you doing back?" Jarrod asked, his eyes lingering on her top a fraction too long.

"My old best friend needed help" Ava said sadly.

Jarrod face immediately fell.

Maggie. His Maggie. Ellie's mother. When he had met her, she was a wild party girl. A complete firecracker, just as likely to ride naked on the back of his bike as she was to out drink the biggest bikie in the club. Then the Battle of Boronia occurred and the Butcher was made.

Being forced away from his family almost killed him. The incarceration, the court case, the media seemed to eat away at Maggie. When he was sentenced, it broke her. Over the next year, she sunk further and further into depression and without him around, she reverted back to drugs. She died of an overdose a year later forcing Ellie into foster homes until her friend Olivia's family took her in for the final few years before she turned eighteen.

Jarrod always made sure Ellie's schooling was payed for and she was never a want for anything but the regret he felt for the loss of Maggie was still a daily agony. Ellie, and making she he was there for her, was the only thing that drove him forward.

"You were there for her? In the end?" Jarrod asked.

"I tried Jarrod. I really did. I can't tell you the amount of times I nursed her back to health after a bender or searched for days for her and pulled her out of strange houses, alleys or drug dens. Poor Ellie was so lost. Maggie was already dead even before she overdosed but I kept trying for Maggies sake" Ava cried, leaning forward to lay a reassuring hand on his leg.

"I killed her Av. As soon as I rode to the Merciless Clubhouse, as soon as I sort revenge for Hogs death, I killed her. As sure as driving a syringe into her arm myself, I killed her." Jarrod felt the tears well up and tried to force them down but then Ava was in his arms again and the tears fell unconstrained. They sat there, embracing for a long time until finally he pulled himself together and Ava pulled back.

"She killed herself Jarrod. You know it was her. She had a beautiful little girl to care for that she never did before you came and after you left. You gave her a chance of a new life but she didn't take it. You're not to blame for this Jarrod. Maggie was."

Jarrod shook his head. "I feel like I let Ellie down. She was forced into Foster care. Alone. I did that!"

"Yes, but you have a chance to fix that. She here. Ellie is a woman now. Not much younger than us really. You can't do anything about the past but you can make a difference now."

Jarrod nodded and wiped away the tears.

"Anyway, enough of this! If any of my brothers see me like this they'll think I'm a weak as shit!"

Ava smiled and said "No one would ever mistake you for being weak Jarrod" Ava chuckled squeezing his massive bicep, "outside or in." She let her hand linger on his arm and studied it further while standing close to him.

"Have you gotten bigger Jarrod since you went inside"

"In every way, Av!" he laughed reaching around to squeeze her ass and she playfully slapped him before returning to her stool.

"So, what has happened to this place Av? It's falling apart." Jarrod eventually asked scanning the room with a look of despair.

"When Hog died and you were sent inside Hal led the gang for a couple of years. Then Eddie came. Eddie brought a group of ex-Haka's with him and he bullied his way to the top within a year. Now he rules the Riders and has driven the gang into the ground."
