Tommy was relaxing at home when there was a call. Since it was almost Midnight he mutters, "Who the fuck would call me Now, even on a Saturday night."
He answered, "Hello."
A female voice asked me, "Is this Thomas Redd?"
"Yes. Who's calling please?" 'God I hope it's not a fucking telemarketer.' Tommy thinks.
"This is the St. Matthews' hospital Emergency Room. I'm Rachel, a nurse here. I have some bad news Thomas. Your sister is here in the ER and since you are her emergency contact, we called."
"Is Tia Okay? Is she gonna ..." Tommy chokes not being able to say it, Die.
"She's been beat up pretty bad but that will heal. You should come in and we can discuss the rest. How soon can you be here?"
Without thinking he says, "I'll be there in less than 15 minutes, Thank you."
Without waiting he hangs up and grabs his keys, cell and wallet then hits the door on the run. He jumps in his car and cranks it up and peels away in a hurry to get to his older sister. He rolls a couple stop signs and pushes it at a couple lights but makes the trek in less than ten minutes. He finds the first parking spot in the ER parking lot and jumps out and runs inside scared shitless. He rushes in through the front doors looking for a desk or somewhere to check in.
He finds it and in a rush he says, "I'm Tom Redd I got a call my sister is here, she said her name is Rachel."
"One second Mr. Redd. Let me get her."
"Actually, can I just see my sister first? They can find me there."
"Let me get Rachel, she wants to talk to you first."
Tommys' anxiety ratchets up a couple notches when it's already at an all time high. "Hurry please." A nervous and scared Tommy says.
The clerk can see he's a wreck and grabs the phone and overhead pages Rachel. A minute later a woman in scrubs walks up to Tommy and asks,
"Thomas?"
"Tommy. Yes. That's me, is my sister Okay? I'm pretty freaked out because you haven't said why she's here."
"Let's step in over here for some privacy." She motions to a nearby consultation room.
Tommy bolts into the room but can't sit down, his worry is all over his face.
"Please have a seat Mr. Redd." Rachel says.
"Please ma'am, just tell me. I'm freaking out and I need to see Tia."
"Please." She repeats calmly motioning to a chair.
Tommy throws himself into a chair just to get the answers he needs. She takes a seat next to him and takes his hand trying to comfort him while saying, "Tommy, your sister was assaulted. She was beaten pretty badly but that should be healed in a few weeks at most. The mental scars may take longer. Tommy, she was sexually assaulted. Apparently it was a date gone really wrong. She will need help at home for awhile as she heals but the biggest thing she will need is love and support. Can you do that for her? Or should we call someone else better suited?"
Tommy looks shocked. 'Tia was raped? How could this happen? She is such a sweetheart. How could someone do this to her?'
"Tommy? Are you hearing me? Is there someone else?" Rachel pushes.
"No. It's just us. Our parents are dead. Grandparents too. It's just us."
"Tommy. You have to pull yourself together. Tia is going to need you for a while. Can you do that?" She asks again, squeezing his hand.
Tommy takes a deep breath knowing he will have to. "Yes ma'am. I can do that. I will have to. She has always been there for me. I guess now it's my turn. But dammit, why does it have to be something so huge." Tommy breaths deep again. "Can I see her now please?" Tommy almost begs.
"Yes, just remember it looks worse than it is and sadly could have been worse. Let's go see her, follow me." Tommy is shaking with the tension but nods, 'Yes.'
They leave the room and head further into the ER after Rachel badges them through a security door. They move to an actual room with a door rather than one of the curtained cubicles. Rachel stops him outside again.
"Remember she is super fragile right now. Downplay her injuries and try not to react too strongly."
Tommy nods, "Yes ma'am I'll do my best."
They step in and Rachel says to a pulled curtain, "Tia it's nurse Rachel. I have Tommy with me. Are you ready for him?"
"Please."
Tommy steps around the curtain after taking a deep breath. He looks at his big sister and starts crying seeing her battered face all bruised, her left eye blackened and swollen. Scraps on her forehead and a big handprint on her left cheek also, obviously from a slap. Her right arm is in a soft cast and a sling from her elbow down to her fingers.
She starts crying too and plaintively whispers, "Oh Tommy."
Tommy steps to his sisters' side and gently takes her in his arms and they cry together. Rachel steps out giving them privacy.
After a couple minutes Tommy pulls himself together. Remembering it's up to him to be strong for her now. He just stands there rocking her slowly waiting for her to calm down saying, "I got you Tia. You're safe. I got you. Tommy is here."
After another minute she pulls back pushing herself back from him with a moan.
When she pulls back he can see she is in pain and asks, "Do you need something for the pain Tia? I'm sure they will give you something."
She shakes her head 'No.' She lays back into her pillows with a slight grimace but once she is back her face relaxes and she sighs. Tommy sits carefully on the bedside facing his sister, concern on his face.
"Can you tell me what happened Tia? They only told me ... what happened. Without saying much."
She takes a shuddering breath and nods. "I was stupid Tommy. I knew there was something off but couldn't figure out what it was until too late."
"NO. This is Not your fault. This is him. Who is he? I'm gonna put Him in the hospital."
"No Tommy! He's a big guy, he'd hurt you. I couldn't handle that. Please promise me you won't go after him. I need you!" Her tears start sliding down her face as she begs him.
"Okay, okay. Did you report him to the police? Please tell me you did."
She's nodding as he asks about the police. He grabs her some tissues and hands them to her, placing them in her left hand.
"Good."
"They were here right after I came in. That nurse said they had to report it. But since I had called 911 they knew already."
Tommy took the tissues back and wiped his sisters' face, drying her tears himself gently. She smiles weakly in Thanks.
With another shuddering breath she continues, "He was a guy from work. I usually don't date coworkers' but he seemed so nice, so I gave it a shot. The first couple dates were fine. He was attentive and pleasant, Gentlemanly, you know?" Tommy just nods. "Tonight he took me to a very nice restaurant and spent a good amount. I could tell he was trying hard to impress me. Something was bothering me though so when he walked me to my door..." She shudders.
Tommy takes her hand and gives a gentle squeeze.
She takes a big breath and goes on, "When we get to the door his body language changed. I gave him a sweet kiss on the cheek and said, 'Goodnight' and turned to my door to unlock it. He almost hollers, 'That's it? A peck on the cheek after a big night like this? You're not going to invite me in?' He was getting red in the face as he went on. I said, 'Not tonight. Goodnight Charlie.' That's when he grabbed me and slapped me." Her hand unconsciously coming up to her bruised face. Her tears return.
Tommy says, "Tia, you don't need to say any more. I got the picture. I'm so sorry this happened to you Sis, no one deserves to be treated like this." Tommy tries to dry her tears again but Tia doesn't let his hand go.
She nods. "Well, after he ... after he hurt me to add insult to injury he punched me saying, 'I don't take no for an answer. Goodnight to you Tia.' Then he punched me and the lights went out. I woke up and crawled to my purse and called 911. They brought me here."
The pain on Tias' face is mirrored on Tommys' and he says again. "I want to kill this guy. But I'll let the cops deal with him. I'm going to take care of my big sister like she did for me so many times." He chuckles, "Since we were kids through last week."
Tia smiles a little but it hurts her face and she stops, grimacing instead.
"How long will they have you here?" Tommy asks. "I don't know yet, they did mention at least overnight."
"Let me go find out Okay?" He lets go of her hand and she reluctantly lets go too. "Don't worry Sis, I'll be right back." Tia nods.
Tommy steps out and looks for Rachel. He sees her at a big desk near the center of the room. He steps over to her and asks, "How long will my sister have to be here?"
She looks at the monitor at Tias' chart before answering, "The doctor hasn't put that in yet. I think we are waiting for the CT Scan to come back. Let me check though."
Then steps away. She steps into a small office off the side. He hears her talking but nothing of what's said. She returns a minute later. "Dr. Fleming is keeping her though the day after tomorrow, well now today. It's late, she needs to rest and then most likely Monday she will be allowed to go home. But that will be up to the doctor on Monday. They will want to see if she is able to go safely first."
"Okay, Thank you."
