This story is prelude to Chapter 1. All characters depicted are 18 years or older. I whole heartedly recommend reading Chapter 1 before this one as this is nothing but spoilers for the reveals in that story.
Something awoke in the darkness. Delicious liquid fire had landed in it's mouth and had roused it. It heard the sound of two animals fighting nearby. It could smell more of the ambrosia coming from them. With a grunt and a snapping sound one beast bested the other and threw it aside, only to fall to the ground itself exhausted.
The awakened one saw the weakness in both and struck, first the weakened victor and then the slowly recovering loser. She drank them both dry.
Her hunger sated, she began to remember. Her name was Meagan, she was a monster hunter. She remembered being in a tunnel, other hunters around her. She remembered being grabbed and dragged through a hidden door. She remembered a man's face bearing an expression of pure anguish. He was reaching out to her as she was pulled away and the door slammed between them. Jake, his name was Jake, and she wanted him more than anything else in the world.
She remembered pain of teeth in her flesh, then the bliss of her life blood draining away. It had been the bliss that was the only mercy of a vampire.
"Oh, no no no," she whispered and ran her tongue along her incisors. Her eye teeth protruded to needle sharp points.
"Well, fuck," she muttered. She had gone from hunter to vampire in a manner of minutes. Was it minutes? She checked her watch. Yeah, ten minutes max. This was a worst case scenario from her hunter cell's point of view. They had all taken that silly oath that should one fall under evil's sway the rest would exterminate the fallen with the greatest possible mercy. Meagan had sworn the oath and sincerely thought that she would prefer to be truly dead than become a vampire. Now her new instincts were already telling her to preserve her existence, go on the attack, and kill them first.
Not Jake though. She wanted to keep him. They had been best friends since they were five years old and lovers since senior prom. She knew he intended to propose after this mission, but had waited to avoid jinxing it. Fat lot of good that superstition did. On the bright side, once she turned him they could have far more than the one mortal lifetime together.
Meagan carefully searched the tunnels, mostly following the smell of burned diesel fuel, the main ingredient in the Molotov cocktails Jake had been carrying. There were prison cells full of other victims of the Master, vampires driven feral through his psychic tortures. She found the heart of the nest, a large chamber with some bare comforts, most of which still smoldered.
She found the body of Professor Alvin, his throat ripped out and badly burned. She snapped his neck, just in case. It would have been his last wish that someone make sure he didn't become undead. Next to him the Master's amulet sitting on a pile of ash. Well damn, they had won after all. Meagan took it, she might as well have a keepsake.
There was another hour before sunset. Meagan accounted for the rest of the cell except Jake. The path to the surface was scorched by several fire bombs. She could picture him flinging them behind him to keep the maddened feral vampires at bay.
It felt good knowing he made it out. She had to wait for sunset before going above ground, so she used the time to make plans. Meagan knew Jacob would follow the contingency plans which meant that he would send messages to other cells to help clean up. If she and Jacob were going to disappear they needed to delay the hunters for as long as possible. Releasing the ferals into the city would keep them busy.
There were many things Jake would need to do, it would take him several hours moving from place to place to do them. Meagan might guess where he would be at any given time while doing them, but she knew exactly where he'd go immediately after.

It was a couple of hours after sunset when she knocked on the door of the apartment she and Jake called their home away from dorm, aka his mother Ramona's apartment.
