Valentine's day was around the corner. All of my friends would be spending it with their girlfriends. I am 30 years old and was going to spend it at home alone again.
They decided to set me up on a blind date. I knew that resistance to this idea was futile. So I agreed to go on this date. They and their girlfriends knew someone in my exact position and felt she needed a date also.
I told them to have her meet me at Bertinelli's at seven. I also told them that I'd be wearing a black tuxedo with a red tie. I got to the restaurant at 6:50pm. I told the Matre'd that I was expecting a young lady to join me.
At seven I saw a beautiful lady enter the restaurant. She was wearing an exquisite white dress. I couldn't see her face but I hoped she was my date for valentine's day.
The matre'd brought her to the table and I was shocked when I discovered who she was.
"Aunt Sydney?" I said.
"Jonathan?" she replied. "This is awkward Jonathan."
"I know aunt Sydney."
"Enough with the aunt Sydney I'm just plain Sydney tonight."
"Okay Sydney. I'm just having a hard time believing that my friends set me up with my aunt."
"I can't believe that they didn't know that we were related Jonathan."
We laughed about the situation and enjoyed our dinner.
"I thought you had a girlfriend."
"And I thought you had a boyfriend."
I said that to keep the family off my back. "likewise Sydney. If they find out about this we'll be up the creek without a boat and a paddle."
"Let's just make sure that they don't find out."
"alright."
"Why are you wearing a tuxedo?"
"It's Valentine's day and guys can't get in if they aren't wearing one. I do know that I can't take you back to your house."
"And going back to yours is totally out of the question."
"the only thing we can do is get a room and wait until morning to go home. I'll pay for the room and a change of clothes for the night."
The waiter brought the check and I paid it. I knew she had someone drop her off at the restaurant. I owned a Cadillac Escalade ESV. I helped her in and we left the restaurant. We stopped at a department store and got some sleeping apparel. Then we went to the Hyatt Regency hotel downtown.
"Mr. Markham, would you like your usual suite?" the desk clerk asked.
"Yes I would Anthony."
"Jonathan, you have a regular suite here?"
"that I do Sydney."
"Here's the key to the presidential suite." Anthony said.
We went to our room and changed clothes for the night.
