Chapter 27: The Army of Five: Part 2

Tiafell and King Escandar stood ready to resume their battle, having agreed to go all out. The declaration caused anxiety among their teams, who watched nervously.

"The King is enjoying this way too much; he can't control himself when he's like this." Serin groaned.

"None of us can compete with him when he's at his best! It takes the four of us to calm him down!" Oletta stated.

"Tiafell doesn't like fighting, normally." Nadia began. "But when his demonic nature takes over, he loses himself and really gets into it."

"This could get scary..." Mirya shivered.

"Or exciting!!" Kanah chimed. Vasati sat with them but was not participating in the conversation. Instead, her eyes were locked on her childhood friend.

"Back in Elfandall, you were always so determined to prove yourself, training harder than everyone else. Your growth was so incredible, you achieved more in a few months than what takes most elves years. But I never imagined you would become strong enough to provoke Gashua's most powerful fighter into giving his all. Just what have you been through, my friend?" Vasati held her hands over her chest, too anxious to cheer for either of them.

The two combatants stared at each other, neither of them moving. After a few tense moments, Escandar intentionally flinched, hoping to provoke the elf into attacking. The ploy worked, Tiafell dashed in front of him, thrusting his sword. The King stepped aside, then swiped his massive wooden claymore at the hybrid's head, who ducked to avoid it. Seeing Escandar's mid-section open, Tiafell landed a stiff punch to his gut. However, his much larger opponent was unphased, responding with a lariat to the elf's collarbone. The force was enough to spin the elf around his arm and land on his stomach. Tiafell's friends stood with concern.

"Stop this! He'll kill him if he hasn't already!" Brion protested.

"I'm sorry, but we can't!" Rhydra responded. "The King's orders are absolute; we must not interfere!"

"Relax, everyone." Vasati stepped in. "I can sense that Tiafell is fine."

"Amazing, a hit like that would have killed most people." Hinako replied.

Tiafell pushed himself up. "I think he knocked me unconscious for a moment, I remember nothing from the time he hit me to when I hit the ground." He uttered.

Not giving him a chance to fully stand, Escandar attempted to kick Tiafell in the ribs. The elf rolled out of the way, then jumped at him, swiping at his head. Escandar tilted his head to narrowly avoid a devastating strike, causing his elven adversary to soar past him. Landing on his feet, Tiafell ran in the opposite direction.

"If you think I can't attack you from a distance, you're sadly mistaken!" With a roar, Escandar slashed the ground in front of him, sending a wave of dirt and rocks surging forward. The monarch used magic to increase the size and speed of the wave. "He'll have no choice but to jump over it, that's when I'll swat him out of the air like a fly!"

The monarch ran just behind the wave, expecting to see the elf jumping over it at any moment. To his shock, Tiafell instead plowed through it, enveloped in a protective blue veil. The smaller fighter then rammed his elbow into the King's gut, having gained incredible momentum. This not only caused Escandar to cry out in pain, the strike also sent him rolling head-over-heels across the ground, eventually coming to stop on his back. The Elite Royal Guard couldn't believe what they had witnessed, Tiafell's friends roared in applause.

"That's the way to do it!!" Cirris cheered.

"TEE-TEE!!" Mirya screamed.

"He's fucking crazy! There's no way he didn't get hurt going through all those rocks!" Oletta shouted.

"He protected himself. It's hard to see from here, but he cast a veil around his body, shielding him from the debris." Hinako informed her. "He thinks on his feet, I like it!"

"Whose side are you on anyway?"

"The King's of course, but I give credit where credit is due." The Oriental mage answered.

Escandar laid on the ground with a smile on his face. "Damn he's good, I haven't had this much fun in ages!" Tiafell jumped above him, intending to land a finishing blow. "But you still have a lot to learn, you make mistakes!"

The King lifted his foot, his boot catching Tiafell in the stomach. Having the wind knocked out of him, the elf could only be helplessly flung away, limply bouncing across the ground. Escandar took his time standing, still reeling from the hit that knocked him off his feet. Rather than moving in to finish Tiafell off, he took the opportunity to regroup.

"Tiafell is quite skilled and strong, but King Escandar is the better, more experienced fighter. He shall prevail in the end." Serin observed.

"Come on, Tiafell. You can do this." Nadia spoke quietly.

Tiafell sat up and slowly rose to his feet. He held his arm across his abdomen, clearly injured, but showed no sign that he was ready to stop fighting. He held his weapon out with his other hand.

"You are doing well, lad. However, you are near your limit. Why not surrender and avoid getting hurt even more?" Escandar asked.

"Never!" Tiafell answered defiantly. "I will never give up! Whether it's fighting you, Dred, or Esteban, surrender is not an option! I won't quit until I've found Alto and brought him back to Vasati either!"

"Oh Tiafell..." Vasati could sense the news about their friend still weighed heavily on the hybrid elf's heart.

"Ah yes, Vasati's fiancΓ©. Should you find him, what will you say? 'Sorry I abandoned you? Sorry for leaving you to die'?" The King taunted him. His words cut into Tiafell's heart, making him drop his guard. "Wide open!" Escandar rushed forward to attack. However, Tiafell regained his composure just in time to block the strike, their wooden weapons clashing once again.

"That was below the belt, I thought you were more honorable than that!" Tiafell protested.

"Your enemies will use whatever dirty tricks they want to win! If you can't handle criticism from an ally, you have no business fighting Dred or any of his associates!" Escandar lectured him.

"So, we're allies now?"

"That remains to be seen. I'll decide that after this fight ends!!"

The two fighters pulled back, then began a series of attacks, blocks, and parries. They made use of the open arena, darting around as their flurries raged across the battlefield. The spectators watched from the stands, barely taking their eyes off them. After a stalemate that lasted several minutes, the weapons of both fighters snapped, breaking at the hilts. Escandar and Tiafell looked at their broken swords in disbelief, then at each other.

"They broke each other's weapons!" Kanah yelled.

"What's going to happen now?" Brion stared wide-eyed.

"Isn't it obvious? When your weapon is gone, you rely on good ol' fisticuffs!" Oletta put her fists together.

King Escandar laughed loudly. "So much for that!" He tossed his useless hilt away, then raised his fists. "How are you with hand-to-hand combat?"

Tiafell discarded his broken weapon, then took a fighting stance. "I consider myself to be fairly decent." He grinned. Light red mist once again swirled around his body.

"I can feel his demonic energy; this could get ugly." Nadia gulped.

"Or it could work to his advantage if he stays in control." Cirris told her. "You've got this, buddy!"

Tiafell and Escandar inched their way toward each other. Once they were close enough, the King thrusted his left fist. The elf bobbed to his left, then attempted an uppercut with his right hand. Escandar backed his head away, then threw a right hook. Tiafell lifted his arms up to block it in a stunning display of strength.

"I should have snapped your little twigs for arms in half! I can't believe how strong you are!" Escandar complemented him.

"I could say the same about you." Tiafell returned the sentiment. "Not that you look weak at all, but you're far stronger than almost everyone I've ever faced!"

"'Almost everyone?' And who is stronger than me?"

"My father. I may be able to hold my own against you, but at my current level, I would be no match for him if he was still alive."

"I see. So that's where your unbelievable power comes from." Escandar nodded. "In any case, you still have yet to best me!"

The King drew his right fist back to throw a hard straight punch. Tiafell ducked and plowed his right fist into Escandar's gut, this time doing noticeable damage as his ab muscles caved in slightly due to the impact. The large man screamed loudly with saliva flying from his mouth, his eyes bugging out. Everyone in the stands were shocked, all of them silent. Not wasting another moment, Tiafell grabbed the King by his suit and, though struggling greatly, managed to lift him over his head. His opponent's massive arms and legs hung limply as the elf held him.

"Okay, no! There is no way in HELL that skinny elf can lift a 460 lb. man over his head and hold him like that! He can't weigh much more than a hundred pounds soaking wet himself!!" Oletta was beside herself; her comrades were in a similar state of disbelief.

"Was he this strong during the attack in Steelweld last month?" Cirris was just as shocked.

"I... don't think so..." Nadia was similarly surprised. "Heh, I took him down with a single kick the evening we met over a year ago, but now I wouldn't dare try to fight him for real."

Growling, Tiafell slammed Escandar onto the ground, causing a loud crash that shook the walls. He then fell to drop an elbow onto his opponent's chest. The King cried out and writhed in pain. Tiafell got up, hoping to deliver another elbow, but Escandar quickly rose to one knee. He grabbed the elf by his throat and jammed his fist into the smaller fighter's face, sending him flying back and onto the ground.

"Man, Tiafell is tough for sure, but I'm happy I didn't face King Escandar." Brion commented. The King slowly got up, holding one of his hands over his chest where he received the elbow drop. Tiafell was motionless, laying on his side.

"Looks like I win, lad. You fought well; I would be honored if you were to stand by my side in battle." Escandar winced.

"Thank you, but I'm not finished yet..." Tiafell painfully pushed himself up, his lip bleeding heavily. "You and I are kindred spirits; I won't be satisfied until we have a definitive winner either." He stood again but nearly fell back down when his knees briefly gave out from under him. Though his opponent was wounded, Tiafell was in worse shape, barely on his feet.

"No matter how badly they want to keep fighting, I cannot see this battle going on for much longer." Rhydra surmised.

"You're right. They are both on their last legs, and those legs are looking wobbly." Hinako said.

Escandar shuffled over to Tiafell, showing no sign of mounting an attack. "You and I are too wounded to move around very much anymore. May I suggest a way to end this?"

"Go on." Tiafell looked at him, his body twitching.

"It's simple, the first to drop their opponent one last time will be the winner, how does that sound?"

"Alright, I'm game."

"Good, then on the count of three. One..."

"Two..."

Both fighters yelled "THREE!" at the same time. Escandar landed the first punch onto the hybrid elf's jaw, almost dropping him and ending the duel immediately. Dazed, Tiafell retaliated with another jab to his gut, which doubled the King over, then planted an uppercut that rocked his head back. Recovering, Escandar threw his right fist forward, which the elf barely blocked. The impact pushed the elf back, his feet sliding through the dirt.

"They both hit as hard as the other, but due to His Majesty's size, his punches easily move Tiafell away." Brion pointed out.

"While Tiafell's barely move him." Rhydra added.

"He doesn't need to move him far, just onto the ground! Come on, Tee-Tee!!" Mirya cupped her hands around her mouth as she cheered.

Serin shook her head. "I swear, those two are peas in a pod. Physically, they couldn't be more different. Tiafell looks like a delicate flower, while King Escandar is the epitome of masculinity. But they both have the same stubbornness that refuses to quit, and raw brute strength very few have ever achieved."

The two fighters continued to exchange blow after blow, neither of them willing to give in. Side stepping another punch, Tiafell landed an uppercut to the King's chin that nearly toppled him over. The monarch threw his head forward to headbutt his smaller adversary, who thrusted his own at the King's. Their skulls collided with a sickening pop. They stood motionless, until Escandar's eyes rolled into the back of his head. He fell limply onto his right side, unconscious. The mouths of all four members of the Elite Royal Guard hung open while Tiafell's friends loudly celebrated.

"HE DID IT! HE WON!!" Kanah gleefully hugged Mirya, who returned the gesture.

"Tiafell!!" Cirris shouted.

It took a moment for Vasati to remember her duty to call the match. "A-As per the rules laid out by the King, Tiafell is the winner by knockout!" Tiafell's friends quickly emptied the stands with the Elite Royal Guard and Vasati following slowly behind them.

"Way to go, Tiafell!" Brion praised his friend once they were by his side.

"Tee-Tee?" Mirya looked at him with concern.

Tiafell stood silently, not having moved at all since his forehead collided with Escandar's. His face was painted with his own blood, his eyes were glossed over, and his mouth was slightly open.

"Tiafell? Hey, come on, snap out of it, buddy!" Cirris shook him.

A small smile formed on the elf's face as he slowly raised his hand to give his friends a thumbs up, acknowledging their presence. His eyes closed and he fell forward, slumping over Escandar's shins.

Vasati and the four guards joined them. "Man, they really beat the holy shit out of each other!" Oletta was impressed.

Serin sighed. "Hinako, heal those two punch drunk dummies if you will." The Oriental mage immediately got to work; a warm gentle light surrounded the fighters who were collapsed together on the ground.

"So, have we proven ourselves? Was this enough?" Nadia asked, defiantly. The guards shared glances.

"Yes, all of you have proven your worthiness to join us in the upcoming war against the enemies who threaten Gashua. I'm sure the King feels the same way and will say as much once he awakens." Rhydra confirmed.

High fives were shared between Tiafell's friends. All that was left was for their friend and the King to be healed. Due to the extent of their injuries, it took twenty minutes for the magic to restore them, and another ten for Escandar to regain consciousness. Tiafell was still out.

"What happened?" the King inquired, sitting up.

"You went and lost, Your Majesty." Serin answered him with a scolding tone in her voice. "Honestly, you can be so reckless sometimes."

King Escandar let out a hearty laugh. "Oh well, it was fun though!" He stood and addressed the visitors. "They may have already said so, but all of you have proven yourselves worthy of fighting with us! I would like to apologize for our behavior in the throne room, it was a part of the test." He turned his attention to Vasati. "You put on quite the performance as well. I can tell you put quite a bit of fear into them, which only served to push them further!"

"I wasn't pretending, My Lord. I knew it was all an act, but I was still concerned for their safety. I know how all of you are!" Vasati told him.

"Yeah, we can lay it on thick, can't we?" The King chuckled, Tiafell stirred and sat up.

"Tee-Tee!" Mirya knelt by his side with everyone else crowding around him. "How do you feel?"

"Light-headed, but okay I guess." He answered her, then noticed everyone around him. "So, it's over? What happened?"

"You won, young man." Escandar answered, offering his hand. "You beat me fair and square, and earned the right to fight alongside us." The elf took the massive hand in front of him, allowing the King to help him up.

"Thank you, truly!" Tiafell smiled, shaking the King's hand. "You have earned your reputation as 'Gashua's Strongest Warrior'!"

"In all honesty, I may have just lost that title!" The bulky monarch chuckled. "This calls for a celebration later tonight in my quarters!" The King's proposal shocked his guards.

"You mean, they're going to join us for...?" Oletta's eyes widened.

"Yes. After seeing what they can do on the battlefield, I want to see what they're like in the bedroom!" Escandar laughed. "Anyway, great job everyone! I want to treat you all to a proper feast, but it's too late to prepare one. We'll do it after Samora and Trista arrive! I'm afraid you'll have to settle for the food on the first floor this evening. It's good, but our personal chefs make much better meals. Wash up, eat, and rest, then report to my quarters at 10:30 tonight. Don't be late!" The King left with his guards, leaving Vasati behind with the others.

"Congratulations everyone! I was nervous the entire time, but all of you truly impressed me!" The female elf was sincere, but she was the most impressed with Tiafell.

"Does he want what I think he does?" Tiafell asked her.

"Yes. His Majesty has invited all of you to participate in an orgy with him and his guards. It's rare for him to invite anyone, I'm the only one they have asked since I've been here."

"Holy shit." Cirris chuckled.

"Woah, you've done it with all of them?" Mirya asked.

"No. They have invited me a few times, but I made a promise that I would not have any kind of sex until Alto is returned to me safely. And if he isn't, I will never make love again..." Vasati swallowed a lump in her throat.

Tiafell stood in front of her. "I will find him and bring him back to you, to us! I swear it on my life!" He looked at her with solid resolve. Seeing his determination, hope she once thought lost returned to her heart and soul.

"Yes, I believe you." The female elf wiped her eyes. "If anyone can, it's you!" She composed herself. "Come with me, I can take you to the public cafeteria."

With that, Tiafell and his friends returned to the locker room where they showered separately and changed back into the clothes they had on before. Vasati then escorted them back into the keep, to a dining area on the first floor. This section was free to the public and included a buffet, much to Kanah's delight. After eating, they were taken to the 19th floor, which served as lodging for the King's guests.

"The King's quarters are two floors up. Rest, sleep, do whatever you need to relax before you join His Majesty and his guard for the 'festivities'. I shall leave so you all can rest. Have a wonderful time!" After saying her goodbyes, Vasati left.

"I can't believe how powerful Tiafell is! I don't know much about demons, but are you really just an elf/incubus hybrid? You seem to be far more powerful than the sum of your parts would suggest." The female elf remained preoccupied with her thoughts while tending to Princess Ingra for the rest of the evening.

The group took her advice and rested, most of them took naps to replenish their energy from the grueling fights from earlier.

Shortly before 10:30 that night, everyone piled into the elevator and pressed the button to the 21st floor. Upon arrival, they were met with large wooden doors, which they pushed open and entered.

King Escandar's chambers were large and lavish. Pictures of the King and his guard lined the walls hanging above couches, a massive bed for the man's big body was placed against the back wall, the floor was padded with a soft red carpet with gold and silver lions sewn across the surface. Inside, Escandar and his Elite Royal Guard were waiting, each of them wearing robes.
