Chapter 23: A New Goal

In the distant past, two armies stood across from each other. One army consisted of an alliance between humans and elves, the other was a massive group of monsters and demons of various shapes and sizes. The demon leader was a fourteen-foot-tall centaur-like creature with pitch black skin all around. It had glowing yellow eyes, long white hair, red horns on its head, and off-white teeth that were on the outside of its mouth. There were four arms on its torso holding red blades in each hand. The demon stood on four feline legs with large sharp claws protruding from between each toe. Its tail was thick but narrowed closer to the tip.

A young wizard stepped forth and addressed the beast in front of him. "I am Marlon, one of the leaders of the 'United Gashuan Alliance'! State your name, foul beast!"

The leader of the demon army sneered, speaking with a deep raspy voice and a slight lisp, louder and more monstrous than his future counterpart's. "I am Dred, King of the Underworld! So far, no one in your world has truly challenged us. But with as many of you as there are and based on the power I feel radiating from you, perhaps you will be the only entertainment we'll find here!"

"This dream again." Samora was observing. "These are Father's memories of when he originally fought Dred." The witch had seen this recurring dream many times since the merger between her mind and Marlon's, witnessing the events through his eyes. The creature in this dream was Dred in his true form. The two rushed into battle against while their armies clashed.

The dream showed fleeting moments from the battle that made one thing clear: Dred was a far more dangerous adversary in his original body. Marlon, though in his prime, fought an increasingly uphill battle. Even the wizard's most powerful holy magic attacks did minimal damage to the beast, his wounds healing instantly. Despite this, the young wizard was able to hold his own for several hours. However, though his strength waned, and he received injuries, Dred remained as fresh as he was when the fight started. The entire landscape around them was reshaped as the Demon King's mouth blasts flattened terrain, leveled hills, and reduced entire forests to ashes.

"Father's magic was unrivaled; any other opponent would have been obliterated within seconds! Yet, it still wasn't enough. The Dred we face today is nothing compared to the monster he once was." Samora commented.

"You should be proud, Marlon." Dred complemented his nemesis who was on the verge of defeat. "You kept up with me for the entire day whereas everyone died in less than a minute. However, you have reached your limit." The large demon raised one of his weapons. "I shall name this blade after you, the one that I will split you down the middle with. Goodbye, Wizard!"

Marlon held his staff out, paralyzing the Demon King. "I have no choice; killing you is clearly not an option, so there is only one way to defeat you now!!" Hooked white chains flew from his staff, digging into Dred's torso. The demon roared as the wizard tugged, slowly pulling his soul out of his body. He was trying to pull his entire soul out, but his strength was fading fast, only being able to pull the top half out. With sword in hand, he bifurcated Dred's soul at the waist, allowing it to be removed from his body. With the dominant half of his spirit removed, the creature's body collapsed lifelessly with a booming crash and dissolved into nothing.

"What... what have you done to me????" Dred screamed in shock and extreme anger over being reduced to a floating ghostly torso.

"I have won, no, Elistria has won! Your conquest of our world has failed!!!" Exhausted, Marlon used the last of his power to form a crystal around what remained of Dred, encapsulating him and shrinking to a size that fit into the palm that fit in the wizard's hand. With their leader gone, many of the surviving demons scattered to live out their lives, becoming the ancestors of the demons that lived in Gashua to the present. The dream skipped ahead days later to Marlon leaving the crystal behind in a cave, sealing the entrance with heavy stones.

"I have seen this many times now, but it never ceases to amaze me. I fear for us all if Dred ever regains his true form." Samora spoke as she watched. Suddenly, her dream changed to a scene she had never seen before. There was a city with tall buildings, all of them burning. Dred was in his original body, towering over a different opponent, both surrounded by the city in flames. This new foe was none other than Tiafell. The elf let out a battle cry and leapt into the air, clashing swords with the King of the Underworld.

"TIAFELL!!!!!" Samora screamed, sitting up in her bed. Panting heavily, she snapped back to reality and saw that she was in her bedroom in the tower. Her bare chest heaved from the terrifying image that awakened her. "By the gods, what was that? Please let that only be a dream, I never want to see Tiafell face that monster!!" She fell back onto her pillow, struggling to calm down.

"Of course that will never happen. Dred cannot regain his true body so long as he remains in our world, he can only regenerate up to what Father left him with. He would need to return to the Underworld, which is protected by an unbreakable barrier. But still, I cannot quell this anxiety in my heart." Samora put her arm over her eyes, her efforts to reassure herself falling short. "Tiafell must obtain this 'divine energy' soon, I get the feeling things are going to get much worse before they get better." She was not able to go back to sleep that night.

Fifteen days had passed since the harrowing Battle for Steelweld. Everyone was fully recovered, even Tiafell who was the most injured. Just after sunrise that morning, Samora went to visit Marlon's grave as she did every day. There was a new headstone to mark the legendary wizard's final resting place. It read:

"Here lies Marlon,

Gashua's Hero,

Wise Teacher,

And Beloved Father."

"Good morning, Father, Erafell." Samora knelt before their graves. "I hope you two have been catching up. Everyone is doing well; their wounds are healed, and they've resumed their training already. I'm going to give them today to rest, and then I'll send them to Janazheim tomorrow morning to meet with King Escandar. I need to stay behind with Trista so I can finish her treatment, it should be over the day after tomorrow."

She sighed deeply. "I miss you both so much, but I can't keep moping around. The time has come for me to be the leader those young men and women need." The witch stood. "Plus, I have my own job to do. I must decipher that book in the Royal Library and learn everything we need to destroy Dred. Rest and watch us, we are going to put an end to all of this once and for all! I will check in with you two later, until then." She returned to the tower to make breakfast for the others. After finishing, she was setting the table when the others arrived.

"Ah, good morning, everyone!" She greeted them.

"'Morning." Cirris yawned.

"Haven't you slept enough?" Nadia shook her head.

"You and Mirya wore me out last night!" He groaned, Nadia and Mirya grinned at each other and high-fived.

"Well, I'm happy that you are all back to normal, truly." Samora wasn't lying, all of them had been gloomy since returning to the tower. But as they rested and recovered, their spirits lifted. Her eyes lingered on Tiafell for a moment, thinking back on the vision she saw involving him and Dred's original form.

"Breakfast looks incredible as always, Miss Samora." Brion complimented her.

"You, Mirya, and Tiafell are so polite! The others could learn a thing or two from you." The witch glanced at Nadia and Cirris, then to Kanah, who was greedily shoveling food into her mouth, stopping only to belch loudly. "Anyway, after I take Trista's food to her, there is something I must discuss with you all."

"She will be able to leave her room and join us in two days, right?" Tiafell inquired, eagerly awaiting a positive response.

"Yes, her treatment will be complete then, but she won't be joining you. All of you are going on a trip tomorrow. I will explain when I come back, I won't be long."

"Oh..." Tiafell sat down, clearly disappointed.

"Don't worry, sweetie. She'll join all of us soon enough. I'll be right back." Samora left to go upstairs.

"I assume this means we are leaving for Janazheim in the morning." Brion said.

"Looks that way. Shit, it's going to be a long trip." Cirris groaned. Nadia grabbed a sausage from his plate and ate it. "What the hell?? Eat your own damn food, Fang Girl!!"

Nadia chewed and swallowed. "Ya snooze, ya lose, Dickhead! Other people's food tastes better, especially when they aren't paying attention!" She stuck her tongue out at him.

"Two can play THAT game!" Cirris attempted to snatch some bacon from her plate, only to have his hand smacked away.

"I'm happy to see those two bickering again. I think you're right, Tee-Tee, this is how they express their affection for each other!" Mirya giggled.

"Yes, it certainly is!" Tiafell and the others watched Nadia and Cirris to their amusement.

Sensing Samora's approach, Trista hastily put on a thin gown that highlighted her figure and drew attention to her breasts. The door opened.

"Hel-looo! Good morning!" Samora happily greeted the female elf.

"Hi." Trista bashfully greeted her, drawing her shoulders up and squeezing her breasts together with her arms. The outlines of her nipples were visible.

"Did you sleep well, dear?"

"I did! And you?"

"No, not really." Samora placed the tray on the table and sat next to Trista. "To tell the truth, I had a dream that terrified me and kept me awake the rest of the night."

"A nightmare?"

"Yes. As I've told you, most of my dreams of late are my father's memories playing back. Last night, I saw his battle with Dred during the Great Demon War, a dream I have witnessed many times now. But..." The witch's hands began to shake. "Afterwards, I saw something new. Dred was in his original body and Tiafell was fighting him!"

Trista put her hand on Samora's. "Oh no, I would be terrified to see him facing that creature! Was Dred really that much stronger in the past?"

"I'm afraid so. I pray he never regains that form, I'm not sure we would be able to stop him."

"But what about that 'divine energy' you told me about? Wouldn't Tiafell still be a match for him?"

"I'm not sure, but Father was confident it would be enough, no matter what. Which is why I must read that book as soon as possible. Speaking of which, they are leaving for Janazheim tomorrow morning so they can meet with King Escandar and hopefully convince him to help us. You and I will leave the day after your treatment is finished. Once there, I plan to focus all of my time and energy on deciphering the entire book."

"That will be two days after they leave. I appreciate you helping me, but I can hardly wait to get out of this room! I'm going stir crazy!"

"I know, sweetie." Samora stroked her cheek. "Try and hang in there, it'll be over the day after tomorrow. The others have been spending time with you, right?"

"Yes, but not all of them. Tiafell comes several times a day, as you know. Nadia and Cirris have begun warming up to me, and Mirya seems to like me quite a bit now. She's been calling me 'Tristy'!" She chuckled a bit. "Brion and Kanah haven't visited me once."

"Mirya only gives nicknames to those she really likes, so you've passed her 'test'! Brion and Kanah will come around, they need more time is all." Samora patted Trista's knee and stood. "Anyway, I should get back down there so I can tell them what's going on."

"Wait, Samora? Can I ask you something first?"

"Yes?"

"You still haven't told the others about divine energy yet, have you? Why tell me and not them?"

"Well," Samora began. "They are going to have a lot of questions, so I decided it would be better to wait until I can answer them. As for you, I know you're terribly bored, lonely, and crave conversation. Plus, it's exciting to hear about, given what little I know about it, is it not?"

"Yes, it certainly is. Thank you for that." Trista smiled, moving hair away from her face. "I understand, explaining it to everyone at once would save time as well."

Samora kissed her forehead. "Thank you for being so understanding, hun. I'll come back later to check on you, and some of the others will likely stop by too. Hang in there a bit longer, I have a surprise planned for when you're able to leave this room!"

"'Kay!" Trista melted every time Samora kissed her like that. The witch left the room, leaving the elf swooning. "I'm half succubus, but SHE'S the one working her magic on ME..."

"I don't know how much longer I can resist Trisa. Because she looks and acts so much like her mother, she's harder for me to resist than Tiafell is!" Samora was sweating as she went back. Composing herself, she walked back into the dining room to see Nadia and Cirris standing in front of each other.

"You're going to PAY for eating my last strip of bacon, cabrΓ³n!" Nadia fumed.

"Do your worst!" Cirris fired back.

Samora stood beside them, loudly clearing her throat. "I'm happy to see you two in such high spirits again, but this is the DINING ROOM! Take it outside or sit down and finish your meal. You don't want to know the ways I can punish you with Father's magic." She projected a threatening aura that frightened everyone in the room.

"Yes, Ma'am!!" The two of them folded and returned to their seats. Being the mother figure to the group, Samora had to scold them often. But deep down, it comforted her recently broken heart to see them acting like themselves again.

"So." she sat at the head of the table, where Marlon used to sit. "As I mentioned earlier, the six of you are going on a trip in the morning. It's time for you to go to Janazheim. Even on horseback, it will take a month to get there."

"It's smack-dab in the middle of Gashua, right?" Cirris asked.

"That's correct." Samora answered. "800 years ago, the Kingdom of Gashua had not been established. But after Dred's defeat, the land on which that famous battle took place became the Kingdom's birthplace, and thus Janazheim was built there. It is the largest and most densely populated town on this continent. More than 44,000 people live there." This stunned everyone, especially Tiafell.

"Forty-four THOUSAND???? I can barely comprehend ONE!!!!" Tiafell exclaimed.

"That's not all, the city is home to scientific and engineering marvels that are slowly expanding throughout the Kingdom, but many of which have yet to leave the confines of the walls. Be prepared to see things beyond your imagination."

"Yeah, it's a pretty wild place!" Nadia interjected. "I went there once to hunt. I was only able to feed on a single person before the Royal Army was on my trail! I haven't been back since. Anyway, it makes towns such as Bridgecross look old-fashioned and behind the times!"

"Woah, and Bridgecross was incredible!" Tiafell was amazed beyond words.

"Way to go, Fang Girl." Cirris teased, earning him a scornful look from the dhampir.

"King Escandar takes the safety of his people seriously. I never met him myself, but based on Father's memories, he proudly serves his people well, unlike his father and grandfather who put their own pleasure ahead of the Kingdom. However, he can be quite stubborn and hard to persuade. I would not be surprised if the only way you can convince him to help us is to face him and his Elite Royal Guard in combat."

Kanah's hands smacked the table. "Are you saying we'll need to fight 'The Army of Five'???"

"Not in an actual battle, but yes, it is a definite possibility. You will fight them using wooden weapons, like you did while training in Steelweld. If it comes to that, know that victory is not your goal, though I doubt it's possible anyway. They are going to test your courage and resolve to face enemies much stronger than you are. Your strength in the face of overwhelming adversity will be measured. Skill is also going to be a factor. The longer you last against them, the better."

"We'll show them we're not to be fucked with! All of us are strong, but Tiafell is in a league of his own! If any of us surprise them, it'll be him!" Nadia praised her friend.

"I hope so." Tiafell wasn't so confident. "When I fought my father, I failed to land a single blow. My injuries may have healed, but my pride is still as wounded as it was on that day."

"Don't let it discourage you." Samora sympathetically assured him. "Cardexx was a master of 'Subayaite', an ancient Gashuan martial arts style known to be one of the most respected for its difficulty to learn and fight against. That, combined with his natural abilities as a demon, made him an opponent very few could match. He had been practicing longer than you've been alive, so it's only natural that you would be no match for him. Oletta of the Elite Royal Guard is also proficient in this technique."

"I had no idea." The elf was happy to learn something else about his father but also saddened. "It's a shame he didn't survive. He was not a bad man, he deserved better."

"He will be avenged, I promise." Samora said with conviction. "But right now, we must focus on our current task: convincing King Escandar to aid us. Rest today, you all have a long journey ahead of you."

"Understood, but I suggest we train on the road in case we do have to fight them. We'll need to polish our fighting styles as much as possible." Brion pointed out.

"Not a bad idea but be careful not to wear yourselves out. You must get there as soon as possible, traveling also takes its toll on the mind and body."

With that, the group agreed to take it easy the entire day, saving their strength for the long journey ahead of them.

That night, Trista took a bath in her room. Once finished, she stood and reached for a towel to dry herself. She sensed someone coming and heard a knock.

"Hey, Trista. May I come in?" It was Tiafell on the other side of the door.

Trista wrapped the towel around her body, then sat on her bed. "Of course you can, you don't need to ask!"

Her brother opened the door and stepped inside. "Hey, so tomorrow, we're-.. OH I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt!!!" He stammered.

"I just finished; you're not interrupting anything." Trista giggled, patting the spot on the bed next to her, Tiafell sat down. "Anyway, what were you saying?" She placed her hand on his thigh.

"Um, yeah. We're heading to the Capital in the morning. Samora says it takes a month to get there." Instead of looking into his sister's eyes, his sights were glued to her breasts that were barely covered by the towel, looking deeply into her cleavage.

"Sounds like quite a trip, I will miss you. But yes, I know about it already. Samora and I are leaving after my treatment is finished, so we'll only be a couple days behind."

"She mentioned that too. I can hardly wait to spend time with you outside of this room." Tiafell still couldn't look his sister in her eyes.

"Like what you see, Tia?" Trista purred. "Be honest!"

His face turned a hot red. "Um... yes, yes I do..."

"Hee-hee, I thought as much. You know..." Trista put her hand on his chest, rubbing it in circles. "I think it would be nice if you and I spent a 'special night' together before you leave in the morning. How does that sound to you?" She brought her face close to his, her breath was hot against his cheek. "Would you like to fuck your big sister?" She whispered.
