Chapter 14: The Battle at Basilix Castle

Trista's castle seemed peaceful and mostly deserted during the day, most of the demons that dwelled within were nocturnal by nature. In the distance, a large army that numbered in the thousands was marching toward the structure. All of them were human, but of diverse ethnicities. Some were from Gashua while others were from Adrui, the continent on the other side of the world. They were also different types of warriors, such as swordsmen, mages, archers, and lancers. These brave fighters were a joint military force, a collaboration by their respective rulers to eliminate the threat that Trista and her forces posed to the entire world.

Meanwhile, Cardexx was in his quarters. His eyes were closed as he floated a few feet above the floor with his hands together and his legs folded under him. The door opened and Esteban walked in.

"Are you sleep when you do that?" he mockingly inquired. Cardexx opened his eyes and unfolded his legs, placing his feet on the floor.

"I am meditating, it keeps my mind clear and my emotions in check" he replied.

"I would likely need to do that if I were in your situation, SeΓ±or" he scoffed.

"What do you want, Esteban?"

"Hmph. That army we have been watching will be here at Basilix Castle in a few hours; I would prepare if I were you."

"I see."

"I shall go inform Lady Trista." Esteban turned to leave.

"I will inform Trista; you should worry about preparing your coven to face them." The two of them stared each other down for a few seconds. Esteban towered over him, but Cardexx was not intimidated in the slightest.

"Fine, have it your way" Esteban stepped out of his way, allowing him to leave. "You have no idea who you fuck with, CabrΓ³n. Should Lord Dred ever issue the command, I would be happy to show you." Esteban muttered before leaving the room.

Trista sat in front of a large mirror on the vanity table in her room, observing her eyes that were staying yellow. Despite the pang of despair in her heart, she applied makeup as if nothing was wrong. After applying everything else, she finished by sliding a tube of lipstick across her lips, coloring them black. She sucked her lips in for coverage, then puckered them out. As Trista finished applying her makeup, there was a knock on her door.

"Yes? Come in."

Cardexx opened the door. "Lady Trista, I have been informed that the army we have been watching will arrive this evening."

"I see. We will take the necessary steps to 'welcome' them. Let the others know."

"Understood" Cardexx closed the door and left. He took a deep breath, he hated the thought of it, but he knew there was no avoiding the bloodshed that was about to happen.

Trista sighed. "They have no idea what they are up against. This will be yet another act that will forever taunt my soul." She stood as female demons entered the room. First they striped her naked then draped her bare body with a dress that was designed to allow her to move freely. Next, they strapped armor around her chest and body, placing a horned helmet on her head and armguards. Once her staff manifested in her hand, she was ready for combat.

Cardexx prepared alone, stepping into thick boots and tying the laces. Then he tied greaves around his shins. Lastly, he pulled steel gauntlets over his hands and strapped armguards around his forearms, he wore no armor on his body. Once finished, he let a few punches fly, followed by some kicks into the air. With a stern expression, he hit his fists together, causing sparks to fly. The rest of their forces spent the rest of the morning and afternoon gathering weapons and armor. As the evening came, the joint army had surrounded the castle except for the back, which was facing the ocean. A gray-haired man wearing golden armor rode to the front of the crowd on his horse.

"This is it, what we have all come together for, this gathering made up of Gashuans and Adruians, banding together to fight a common enemy! This is where the demons and vampires that have plagued our lands and our homes in recent years have set up their base! Do not forget, they are led by a sorceress who is a succubus/elf hybrid. She will be the most beautiful woman you have ever seen, and she will attempt to seduce you, but you must resist her! She is a monster, just like the others that serve her! Strike them all down, show them the same brutality they have been showing our people!" He raised his sword and shouted a battle cry, his entire army doing the same. Pointing his weapon toward the castle, archers pulled their bows back and released flaming arrows that flew over the walls. The projectiles struck walls, the ground, and some demons, killing a few of them. Winged demons took to the sky above the castle walls, firing their own arrows and some using their own natural projectiles down such as needles, spikes, and fire. Many of the humans protected themselves with shields but some were struck down.

"Do not let up! Shoot them all out of the sky!!" the general shouted. Arrows continued to fly between the armies, with mages releasing spells of different elements at the air-borne creatures. The castle gates opened and released a horde of demons. There were various kinds of them: orcs, minotaurs, centaurs, arachne, bipedal lizard-like creatures, cyclopes, to name a few. Most of them carried shields and one-handed weapons but larger ones only wore armor, preferring to use their hands. The wave marched toward the humans.

The general raised his weapon. "Right wing, chaaaarge!!"

The right infantry rushed at the coming demon horde; their battle cries were deafening. The monsters responded by roaring and running to meet them. When the two groups collided, there was a thunderous collision of bodies and steel clashing together. It was an intense and bloody fight; humans were being torn or slashed to pieces with some of them being crushed by the larger demons. However, demons were also being killed. The smaller ones were going down as brutally as the humans were, with only the larger beasts having a clear advantage, but even those were falling due to humans working together against them, mages proving to be particularly effective against them. The grass was dyed red with blood as bodies, limbs, and entrails were spilled with every passing moment.

"Left flank! Left flank!" someone yelled. The ocean was to the left of the humans. Aquatic monsters were emerging from the sea. Fish-like humanoids carrying spears, quadrupedal sharks, and other sea monsters came ashore to aid their land-dwelling allies. The creatures charged toward the human army on their other side.

"We're being surrounded!!" an officer was growing quite concerned.

"Hold your ground, do not run to meet them, let them come to us! Do not separate our forces!" the general commanded.

The sea creatures clashed with the humans on the left side, resulting in a similar slaughter to the one still happening to their right. Many of the sea-borne monsters were eating the people they killed in battle. The battle cries and screams of the suffering were deafening.

Trista stood in the courtyard of the castle with Cardexx, Esteban, and Dred. "Their army is dwindling down, but how about we step in before we lose very many more of our own?" she offered.

"SΓ!" Esteban waved his rapier. "If you can block the sun, my coven can help as well!" Being a vampire lord, he was the only member of his coven that was unaffected by sunlight.

"A simple enough task" Trista giggled. Raising her staff toward the sky, she spoke a brief incantation. A moon-like object formed in front of the sun, creating an artificial eclipse. Although it was only a few hundred feet above them, it was enough to completely block all sunlight from the surrounding area.

Esteban pointed the tip of his blade at the opposing army. "Now! Go and show them all what the Red Crescent Coven can do!!" he ordered.

Hundreds of vampires wearing black robes with red crescent moon emblems woven into the back emerged from the surrounding buildings and ran toward the battlefield carrying an array of weapons. Some left through the gate while others climbed and leapt over the walls. All of them had ghostly pale faces with red glowing eyes, many of them bore their fangs as they neared their enemies. They joined their demonic allies on the right side and proceeded to massacre humans in large numbers. While a few of the vampires were killed, their enhanced speed and agility were enough to overwhelm their opponents in ways that the demons couldn't. Some were biting humans and drinking their blood.

"They do make things interesting, but I think we should still personally step in, wouldn't you all agree?" Trista proposed with a playful tone.

"My blade also thrusts for blood!" Esteban declared. Cardexx nodded without saying a word. Dred sprouted his lower pair of arms, and his red swords appeared in his four hands.

"Let them know what true horror is. Show them what Hell looks like before they get there" the demon growled. Trista raised her staff and shouted, causing the four of them to teleport in front of the human army.

"It's Trista and her generals! Kill them, and their army will be left in disarray without their leadership!" the general commanded. The front infantry charged, greatly outnumbering Trista and her generals.

"Have fun, boys!" the elf bowed invitingly toward her generals.

Esteban disappeared and skewered a soldier through his face in an instant. He ripped his rapier out through the side of his head as others surrounded him. Despite their greater numbers, not one of them was able to land a strike on the vampire lord, even with many of them attacking him at once. He lifted his finger, dark purple hands shot out of the ground and grabbed humans by their throats, pulling them down with enough force to snap their heads off their shoulders. Esteban was laughing boisterously as he dueled with and killed soldiers. Soldiers also approached Cardexx, who raised his fists in a martial arts stance.

"It's nothing personal, but you should not have come here. I'm sorry, but I have no other choice. I will make this as painless as possible.." He felt deep remorse for what was about to happen. The middle-aged demon showed incredible speed, strength, and skill as he was able to outmaneuver his opponents. Every punch and kick he landed crushed the armor and internal organs of each opponent, killing them instantly with no pain or suffering. Unlike his comrades, Cardexx took no joy in torturing his enemies and chose to show them mercy and give them honorable ends. Several men stood in before Trista as well, who was smiling at them all.

"Do not forget, she is part succubus! She will use her allure to seduce and kill you. Resist her!!" an officer shouted.

"Why do you boys want to hurt poor little me...?" Trista innocently asked, using her arms to press her breasts together. Many of the men fell for it, looking into her cleavage. "I'm only a helpless girl who wants big, strong men like yourselves to save her from all these demons!"

"Maybe.. we're making a mistake! We should save this woman!" one of the men suggested, a few of his comrades were agreeing with him.

"You idiots! You have let her seduce you! Snap out of it!" the officer yelled, but soon found himself ran through from behind by one of his own men. This caused the group to begin fighting among themselves, those who had been seduced by Trista were battling with those who resisted. The elven sorceress laughed in twisted joy as she watched them kill each other, it was too easy. Some of them realized what had happened and broke off from the infighting to attack Trista directly. She smiled as she engaged them, using her staff and barriers to block their strikes.

"You demented witch! You turned our brothers against each other! There's a special place in Hell just for you!" a young man screamed with tears in his eyes.

"Really?" Trista smirked. "Why don't you go and prepare it for me then?" She snapped her fingers, causing the young man to burst into intense flames that reduced him to bones within seconds, his skeletal remains crumbled into dust when they hit the ground. As the others continued their attempted assault, she proceeded to kill her opponents one by one, either burning them, blasting them with electricity, and in one case causing the ground to open and swallow three of them before closing it back. She had killed everyone that broke from the group that were still fighting each other, though most of those had already killed each other.

"That was fun, but I think it's time to put the rest of them to bed." Trista raised her hands toward the sky, the object blocking the sun expanded and turned into thick black clouds. A huge bolt of lightning struck the infighting group, killing them all at once. More bolts rained down and ripped through the battlefield, killing everyone they hit and sending their lifeless bodies flying into crowds of soldiers.

As this was happening, Dred was also engaging in battle. His long arms stretched as he swung his blades, slicing multiple humans in half with each motion, their armor provided no resistance. A few warriors had gotten close enough to cut or stab him, but the demon took no damage. Their attacks only proved to be their downfall as Dred finished them off by brutally hacking them to pieces. Archers fired arrows toward him, many of them hitting their mark. Though Dred's body was punctured by arrows all over, he still showed no sign of pain or injury. The ribbon-like appendages on his back stretched and grabbed the archers, then slammed them against each other or onto the ground with enough impact to snap their necks or backs. They were acting as additional arms for the demon. Heavily armored men guarded mages as they chanted spells for holy magic. Dred narrowed his eyes as he turned to face them.

"You humans are arrogant beyond measure, believing that you are holy and righteous enough to wield holy magic..." Dred held the edge of one of his blades to his cheek and cut himself across his face. Creating a "mouth", his jaw dropped and hung open low as if his jawbone had detached from his skull. There was a void inside the opening on his face with an orange light forming from within. Even with his "mouth" hanging open, he still spoke clearly.

"Be humbled and tremble in fear... as you bear witness to the unstoppable might of Dred, the future ruler over existence itself!!!"

Before anyone realized what was about to happen, an intense beam of orange light launched from Dred's "mouth". The beam ripped through the human army, erasing all traces of everyone in its path. Once it dissipated, a trail of smoldering earth was left behind. With the devastation caused by the combination of Dred's attack and Trista's lightning, the human army had been reduced to a few hundred in number. Soldiers were beginning to cower and retreat, only to be caught and murdered by demons or vampires.

With the battle reaching its end, Cardexx was finishing some of the remnants off. A soldier charged to attack him but was impaled through his head from behind by Esteban's rapier, the bloodied tip stopped an inch away the middle-aged man's eye.

Esteban pulled his long blade out, allowing the corpse to fall. "Can't be too careful out here, amigo. Accidents can happen on the battlefield, no?" he let out shrill, loud laughter as he smacked Cardexx on the shoulder before leaving to fight other humans. The other man was not amused.

The field in front of the castle was covered with so many bodies the ground beneath them could not be seen. Though demons and vampires were among the dead, most of them were human. Despite their valiant efforts, the human army had failed. Their numbers had dwindled down to less than a hundred, then to less than fifty.

"Halt!!" Trista yelled, her entire army heard her command and stopped attacking. The few remaining humans fell to the ground, too exhausted to stay on their feet. She made her way to the commanding officer, who had fallen to his knees. He was bloodied and wounded, no longer able to put up any resistance.

"Go on, finish me!" Although he was afraid, he wanted to save face and die bravely. "Let me join my men in death."

"Oh honey, I'm not going to kill you!" The elf spoke softly, bending over to look him in the eye. "I've decided to recruit you and your remaining men! You were all skilled enough to survive this long, I think that warrants giving you all a place in my army! You won't be human anymore however, I'm going to run some experiments and try turning you all into demons, or whatever else you may change into. I'm excited to see how it goes!"

"No! Kill us now! We'll never join you!"

"Oh, did I imply that you had a say in the matter? I'm sorry dear, but your consent is not a factor" she smiled wickedly at him. "Gather the survivors and lock them up. I grow weary, I must rest before I play with them."

Demon and vampires took the remaining humans as prisoners, carrying them into the castle. The commanding officer was shouting, trying to fight them off but was too wounded and fatigued to be effective.

"Damn you, damn you all to Hell!! We might have failed, but King Escandar and his royal army will have the last laugh. Long live King Escandar!!" he declared before disappearing into the keep. Some of the human corpses sat up, their eyes began glowing red and their skin had become pale, they were reborn as vampires.

"Lady Trista" Cardexx approached her. "This is a cruel and unjust fate for these warriors. Finish them off, let them die with their honor intact!"

"We need to replenish our forces. That handful we took won't be enough, but we have a rare opportunity here. We can experiment and discover what we can transform humans into. We know they can become vampires and revenants, maybe they can turn into demons as well."

"But Trista-"

"That's 'Lady Trista' to you! Do not step out of line again, do you understand?" she roared.

"As you wish.." Cardexx relented. Trista had never retaliated against him like that before, it deeply troubled him.

"Good. We'll leave the bodies where they are until we've all had a chance to rest. You should do the same." she stated coldly before heading into the castle.

Esteban was waiting for her at the entrance to the tower. "Lady Trista, shall I fuck you to celebrate our victory?" He proposed.

"I'm exhausted, I wish to rest" she flatly refused.

"Alright, sweet dreams, Bonita." Esteban bowed and allowed her to leave. The vampire lord noticed the sky was clearing and ordered his coven, and the new vampires, to retreat into the safety of the keep. His coven was able to take cover, but not all the new vampires made it inside. The sun's rays caught them and burned them to nothing. Cardexx stayed in the field, surveying the carnage before him.

"This is only a sample of the needless death that will soon sweep across Gashua, no, the entire world. Is there nothing I can do to prevent it? Am I doomed to participate in the coming carnage against my will?"

As he lamented, Dred appeared next to him, his four hands were empty. "You know, souls are interesting objects." Dred mused as a glowing white orb appeared in his upper left hand. Cardexx broke into a cold sweat, displaying fear that was rarely seen from him. "They are not easy to break, and yet one little squeeze..." his grip on the orb tightened, making light cracking sounds. Cardexx gasped loudly and dropped to his knees and one hand, clenching his chest with the other. "... can cause it's owner so much suffering."

"Do it..." Cardexx groaned. "Not existing would preferable over watching as you corrupt my daughter further! She thinks she is going to conquer the world and become Queen, but she is only doing your dirty work without realizing it!" He coughed; his agitation worsened his condition.
