Chapter 11: Turning the Tides

In the ruins of Gatharham's Town Square, Samora stood before Dred with Tiafell, Nadia, Cirris, and Mirya watching from behind cover. As the sun set further, it was growing increasingly dark. The Witch held her broom above her head, the cleaning tool shun brightly and transformed into a white staff. It was lined with many gemstones along its length, truly a beautiful weapon. With a shout, she jammed one end into the ground, which caused several fireballs to scatter from the top. The flaming spheres flew into lamp posts, igniting them and illuminating the area.

"Afraid of the dark?" Dred was amused. He clenched the red blades in his four hands. They had black vein-like patterns that moved throughout the weapons as though they were alive.

"I only want to see if you look as disgusting as Father claims, you're even more sickening!" Samora answered with a venomous contempt in her voice. "Tell me Dred, what is it that this Trista wants with my children?" she asked, unaware of his true intentions.

The demon let out a low growl. "Fine, I will share this much with you. We needed the twins because of their latent magical potential. We were going to syphon it and then use that power to shatter the barrier that surrounds the Endless Forest."

"Why? What is in that forest that any of you could possibly want? Wait, no..." her mouth hung open.

"Tiafell. We needed your spawn so we could destroy that damned barrier and get him. But here he is, he may as well have gift wrapped himself for us! He has saved us years of work by leaving the forest on his own!" he laughed.

"What does she want with Tiafell?"

"You would have to ask Trista, but I have my own use for him as well. Only he will get the chance to ask her what she wants with him. The rest of you are going to meet your end right here. You will burn with what's left of this deserted town, and then I will take the halfling with me!!!"

"He was sent by that Trista bitch? When I get my hands on her.." Nadia growled.

"He called me 'halfling', after calling me a 'half demon' earlier. Why does he keep saying things that?" Tiafell pondered as he watched with an uneasiness growing from within.

Dred swung his red blades, sending red waves of energy toward the witch, which were dissolved by an invisible barrier in front of her. He then flew around to attempt to strike Samora from her right side, but a wall of stone rose from the ground to protect her. She leapt above the wall and cast a bolt of lightning from her staff, landing a direct hit on the demon. He grunted as he attempted to stab her with one of his many blades, the arm stretching quickly. She mounted her staff and flew out of the blade's path, but all of Dred's arms stretched and whipped in different directions, aiming at Samora from different angles. Though not easily, she was able to float around the incoming attacks. One that came close to hitting her struck the protective barrier surrounding her, putting a crack in it. The demon was following behind her, his long stretching arms continuing his failed attempts to hit the elusive target. As he hacked and slashed at Samora, the town around them was being destroyed further. The witch cast a lightning bolt from her weapon that hit a building, causing a chunk of it to fall with Dred under it. He flew out of its way but was struck from behind by an energy ball from Samora, an attack similar to her son's. He fell and hit the ground, then another chunk of debris landed on top of him, pinning him down. The witch used gravity magic to increase the weight of the object to try and flatten him.

"She's got him!!" Nadia cheered.

Dred roared as he was being crushed, with Samora increasing the pressure. The demon's arms twisted upward so he could slice the debris into small chunks, freeing himself. He flew quickly to Samora and slashed at her. The barrier protecting her shattered but she was able to fly back in time to avoid being cut, with her hat being clipped. She flew away from him to get some distance, but the monster chased her, swiping at her once again.

"You are beginning to annoy me, bitch!!" Dred yelled.

"He's gotten faster and stronger, drawing this battle out would be certain death. I need to properly restrain him long enough to use that spell!" Samora thought to herself.

"I don't care what she said, we have to help her!" Cirris told the others.

"But how? We can't keep up with that! Look at how seriously he's fighting Mom, that means he was toying with us! What can we do??" Mirya replied.

"We'll strike when Dred least expects it. I have a plan, listen carefully!" the four of them discussed Cirris' plan as the battle waged on.

Deciding to change tactics, Samora stopped flying and dismounted her staff. She raised her weapon to block one of Dred's blades. She was holding him back with both hands on her weapon, but the other blades were moving toward her. Before they hit her, various debris from the area appeared and shielded her.

"I'm disappointed Samora, but also not surprised. Your father was much more powerful than this when he was your age. The apple has fallen far from the tree" he mocked.

"Actually Dred, I have not lost any confidence that I can defeat you. As a matter of fact, I have you exactly where I want you!" she smirked at him.

"What..?" the demon was confused. He heard a rumbling from the ground beneath him. Before he could react, sand, rocks, and fragments from the street rose and surrounded him, encasing him inside a cocoon of earth with his arms sticking out of the sides. Ice formed at the base of the cocoon and spread until it, as well as Dred's arms, were frozen solid, leaving only his fingers and blades unfrozen. Samora cast lightning from her staff onto all four of Dred's metal blades at once, which amplified the voltage and ran throughout his body. His loud pained screams were heard from inside the cocoon. As his hands went limp, the blades fell onto the ground with loud clangs. They burned away almost immediately, seemingly unable to exist outside of Dred's grasp.

"That should hold him.." Samora spoke quietly as she began a long, detailed incantation. A mixture of white and gold light formed around her; the aura danced like flames.

"Cirris, is that..?" Mirya wondered.

"No doubt! It's holy magic! She'll destroy him with that for sure!" Cirris cheered.

"Holy magic..." Tiafell whispered to himself. He had never seen holy magic used before. The books he read about it claimed that it was incredibly difficult to use but it was the most effective magic against demons.

"That's why she trapped him inside all that earth. The incantation for holy magic takes a long time. I hope he'll stay trapped long enough for her to use it" Cirris added.

"That magic is just as effective against vampires. I hope I'm never on her bad side" Nadia said nervously. They watched anxiously as Samora continued to chant. The holy aura intensified as the moments passed.

"She should be close to finishing! Finish him, Mom!" Cirris yelled.

A very loud roar was heard from inside the cocoon, then it and the ice surrounding it shattered, Dred had broken free. He slammed his upper right fist into Samora's face, sending her to the ground and breaking her focus, ending her incantation. The holy energy surrounding her vanished, but Dred paid a price for it. The hand that he punched her with was burned away, with the stub turning white.

"Was that your plan? To eradicate me with holy magic?" he chuckled. "It was a good effort; it will be days before I can grow this hand back." He raised the stub that used to be his upper right hand. "But your only chance of defeating me has failed!"

Samora got back onto her feet, her cheek was red from the punch, but her confidence was what took the most damage. Dred was right, that was her one shot, and he would not allow her another chance to cast holy magic. Without it, she would not be able to defeat him. Though she was determined not to show it outwardly, she knew this was a fight she could no longer win. Blades reappeared in Dred's three functional hands.

"Shit! Alright, Mom really needs us now! Everyone knows what to do!" Cirris commanded. Tiafell, Nadia, and Mirya quietly left while Cirris gathered energy into his right hand, forming it into a ball that slowly grew larger.

Dred sighed. "I'm disappointed in you, Samora. Your father was a powerful wizard, but it seems that he didn't squirt any of his potential out when he fucked the whore that turned out to be your mother."

"My mother was a powerful witch herself. You dishonor her, and I will not stand for it!" Samora fumed as she raised her staff. She pointed it forward, sending flaming rocks at Dred, who sliced them away with quick slashes of his blades. Samora knew that she was only delaying her defeat. Her last hope was that the others escaped and left her behind. Maybe they would reach her father's tower, and he would be able to help them, to train them so they could succeed where she failed.

As her attack continued, she saw flaming purple bats whizzing by her, an entire colony was flying into Dred, causing him to flinch with collision. Every bat exploded upon impact in small fiery purple blasts. He was using his blades to shield himself as there were too many for him to cut down. Samora looked to her left and saw Nadia standing by her.

"Nadia? What are you doing? I told you to take cover!"

"Not a chance! We came here to help you, we're not about to let this pendejo kill you!" the vampire declared, continuing to pummel Dred with flaming bats.

"Vampire whore! I'll cut you down!" Dred shouted. He was able to free one of his blades, the lower right one. He pointed it forward and thrusted it at Nadia, only for his blade and hand to drop to the ground with a heavy crash. "What?? I can't move my hand!" He tried to lift his hand, but it was so heavy that he couldn't move it at all.

Mirya emerged from behind some rumble. "Gravity spells are highly advanced magic. I took it upon myself to learn one when I was 14. I still haven't quite mastered it yet, so my rate of success with it is low. It was a risk I was willing to take and look how well it paid off! Your hand and weapon weigh a thousand pounds each. Good luck moving two thousand pounds!" she smiled.

"Mirya!" Samora wanted to scold her, but she couldn't have been happier to see her daughter bravely helping and how dedicated she was to her magic.

Dred growled angrily, growing infuriated. "You are all trying my patience!!! I will cut you in half, starting with your pussies and going up through your skulls!!!" He had become so angry that he stopped shielding himself from the barrage of flaming bats, moving his blades away. His only concern was to kill the three women in front of him. The bats would hurt, but he was certain he would kill them before they would do significant damage. As he prepared to attack, he felt both his upper and lower left arms being severed at once. Dred's only remaining usable arm was the one with the burned off hand, which would not be growing back any time soon. The bats were a distraction, a realization he made after it was too late.

"God... damn you Tiafell!!!!!" Dred screamed at the top of his lungs as the elf walked in front of him, looking up at him with fierce eyes. Nadia stopped the swarm so they wouldn't strike her elven friend.

"Dred, I have a lot of questions for you. It's hard for me to narrow my questions down and I only have enough time to ask you one thing, so here it is. Why have you been referring to me as 'half demon' and 'halfing'?" Tiafell inquired.

The demon laughed. "Those fools in Elfandall never told you, did they? You are an elf/demon hybrid. You are the son of an incubus and an elven female." Tiafell's eyes widened in shock, along with Mirya's and Nadia's. Samora did not react. "You are a very special being, one of only two hybrids of your kind to ever exist. Your magical and physical potential cannot be measured, you have everything you need to become the most powerful being this world has ever known. Nothing is out of your grasp!"

"I... what...?" Tiafell was devastated to hear his words. They were hard to believe, but he was able to sense that everything Dred told him was true. In addition, he knew it deep inside, as if something inside was confirming it all for him. "I'm a..."

"Tiafell! Move out of the way!!" Cirris yelled, holding an energy ball that was the same size as Dred in his hand.

Tiafell snapped out of his thoughts and did as Cirris asked, along with everyone else. Cirris threw the energy at Dred, who was still trying to free his hand. He pulled until his arm that was pinned down by the gravity spell snapped off at the wrist, but it was too late. The energy hit its mark; Dred's blood curdling screams were heard as he was sent careening into a building that was barely standing. The impact caused the weakened foundation to give way, and the structure collapsed on top of him.

"Yeah! Eat shit, motherfucker!!" Cirris extended both of his middle fingers toward Dred.

"Mommy!!" Mirya ran to her mother and threw herself into her arms. Cirris joined her, hugging her from behind.

"Is everyone alright?" Nadia asked. She looked at Tiafell, who was lost in thought. "Tiafell?"

"It isn't over" the elf noted. "He's going to come back, and he won't be happy."

"He's right" Samora confirmed, standing up. "Holy magic is the only thing that will stop him. I should be scolding you all for not doing what I told you to do, but your disobedience has bought us a second chance! He is probably going to attack again before I can finish the incantation, so I'm going to need you all to buy me 30 seconds."

"We've got this Mom, you do what you need to do!" Cirris boldly stated, giving her a thumbs up. Everyone else nodded in agreement.

Tiafell looked in the direction of the collapsed building. "Get ready, he's going to break free any moment now!" he warned them.

Samora immediately began chanting, the gold and white aura formed at her feet and grew. A loud crash was heard, followed by the roar of an extremely enraged demon. The four youths ran toward the collapsed building, where they saw Dred hovering in front. His severed arms had grown back, though his upper right hand was still gone. His yellow eyes had turned blood red, the red veins that ran throughout his torso and arms were protruding and pulsing violently. His arms and body had become incredibly muscular, his biceps, pecs, shoulder muscles, and abs bulged outward. He was seething and trembling with rage.

"You bastards... you can't kill me... BUT YOU EXCEL AT PISSING ME OFF!!!"

"Stop throwing such a temper tantrum, you're worse than a spoiled child not getting their way!" Nadia said as she launched another barrage of purple bats at him. Dred didn't bother to block them, he flew forward, letting them hit. Just before he was on top of them, Cirris lifted his finger, causing dirt and sand to fly in front of the demon, stopping him momentarily.

"Stop delaying your fate!!!" he cursed, flying through the sand cloud. When he emerged on the other side, Nadia's fist connected with his chin in an uppercut that sent him spinning backwards through the air.

"He's become so blinded by his rage that he has gotten sloppy, we can do this if we stay calm!" Tiafell was encouraged as he waited for his chance to step in.

Dred stopped himself from spinning and hid within the sand cloud. One of his fists shot out of it and hit Nadia in her chest. The arm stretched and carried her until it smashed her against a wall with enough force to greatly damage it. When he pulled his fist away, she slumped over limply, unresponsive.

"NADIA!!!!" Tiafell screamed, no longer able to sense her presence. Fearing the worst, he charged Dred with tears in his eyes. The red mist from earlier returned and was flowing around the elf as he slashed at the demon, who was avoiding his attacks. Cirris and Mirya went to Nadia's side.

"Nadi? Wake up, please wake up!!" Mirya cried out, becoming emotional.

"She's breathing, but she is badly hurt" Cirris told her before looking at Tiafell. "Wow, look at him go!"

Dred was barely dodging the elf's relentless attacks. "Demon rage, proof of your demonic blood."

"Shut up! Nadia may be dead because of you! I'll make you pay!!" Tiafell roared as he continued his assault, snarling and growling like a wild beast. Despite his tenacity, none of his attacks were connecting. Dred, however, was able to counterattack, landing heavy punches onto Tiafell's body and across his face. However, this only seemed to make the elf angrier.

"That's it! Now you are taking your licks like a true demon!" Dred taunted him as one of his opponent's slashes finally hit, ripping his chest open, though it closed back within a couple of seconds.

"I will hack you into pieces, Dred..." Tiafell bellowed in a deep monstrous voice that was nothing like his usual gentle and effeminate one. "I will make you pay for what you did to Nadiaaaaa!!!" The enraged elf resumed his reckless assault.

Not being deterred, Dred continued to trade blows with Tiafell. The elf's slashes were finally connecting but the wounds closed themselves almost as soon as they were inflicted. Dred's punches were doing no noticeable damage to his hybrid opponent. The two of them were brawling in a vicious, ugly stalemate. That is, until a heavy blow to Tiafell's face landed with enough force to spin him around. Though he was uninjured, the impact ended his enraged state, leaving him dazed and vulnerable.

Dred drew his upper left fist back. "Done already? Then take a nap while I send the rest of your friends to join the vampire in Hell!!" Before he threw the punch, a glowing figure flew past them. It was Samora, flying on her staff and enveloped with a holy aura.

"Move away!!" she commanded as she unleashed a large wave of holy energy. Tiafell came to his senses and dove out of the way. Dred watched as the light sped toward him.

"You bitch!!" he screamed, very narrowly avoiding it to everyone's shock and dismay. He laughed triumphantly. "You got a second chance, and you still fucked it up!! Marlon will die of embarrassment and then roll over in his grave from his disappointment in you!!" he continued his hysterical laughter. Tears streamed down Samora's cheeks as she dropped to her knees in defeat. Cirris and Mirya held each other and the unconscious Nadia as they watched their last hope fail. Tiafell, however, was not about to let things end that way. He stood up and ran at top speed, picking up a discarded bow and arrow as he raced ahead. He stopped in front of the energy, standing in its path.

"Tiafell!! That magic will destroy you!!" Samora shouted.

"We fought too hard to let this fail.. We're going to win this!!!" the elf proclaimed as he readied an arrow, pulled the string back, and let go.

The arrow passed through the light and carried a white flame with it. He dove out of its path as it flew into the wilderness, dissipating when it hit a rock formation. The flaming white arrow flew toward Dred. The demon could only watch helplessly as the arrow struck him in his neck. His red eyes turned back to yellow as they shook in fear.

"NOOOOOO!!!" Dred screamed as the white flames moved from the arrow to his neck, quickly engulfing his entire body. He wailed in agony and flailed his arms around with the holy flames burning him. Flaming chunks fell from his form, burning away into nothing when they hit the ground. Everyone cheered, victory was theirs at last.

"You did it Tee-Tee!!" Mirya praised him.

"You're a badass, Tiafell!!" Cirris added. Samora, however, withheld her celebration.

"It's over, but only for now" she said sternly.

Dred stopped screaming and started laughing, despite more than half of his body and all his arms having been burned away. "Yes.. 'death' is only a temporary setback for me. Your 'victory' was only possible because I was summoned by fools who knew nothing about magic or demon summoning. Next time, I will have my full power, and I will use it to crush you all!" Dred was little more than a head, neck, and shoulders at that point.
