THE TATTOOED WOMAN
Thought I'd try something a little different.
I borrowed heavily from some of the concepts to be found in stories by

Chapter 5: Blood and Fire
The Dark Elves slipped through the darkness like wraiths. Clad in mail and leather, wielding blades of darkened steel and with their hoods drawn over their silver hair, they were all but shadows. Azure scouted the way as usual, and she may as well have been a ghost for all the noise she made. She flitted between the trees like a wisp, moving silently as she approached the ivy-covered outer bastion of the walled structure that was their objective.
The buildings appeared to form an old chapel or temple complex of some kind, perchance an old priory or monastic grange. The walls were of crumbling stone and those windows she could see were dark apertures secured with rusted iron bars.
The place was situated high up on the side of a glen, and all but hidden by deep woods of pine, birch, and rowan. The remains of a rough track led towards the crumbling walls and a ramshackle gate.
To one side there looked to be an orchard, with neat rows of apple, pear and even some plum trees, and there were plentiful bushes of gooseberries and raspberries, but Azure's keen eyes spotted a few misgiving signs, for the fruit appeared to be unpicked, and left rotting.
Nearer the walls was a herb garden and a sizeable allotment of potatoes, turnips, peas and other vegetables, but again, the place looked untended of late and as she moved closer she felt her hackles rising. The woman plucked a piece of grass and idly picked her teeth as she watched and considered. It was too quiet she mused, and she was uncomfortably certain the chill she felt running down her spine was not entirely due to the cold weather.
The canny Dark Elf slid closer to the gate, once it would have been a sturdy wooden barrier, with hefty-looking iron hinges, but the wood was old, and rotten in places, but her keen eyes noted that there were a few signs that some effort had been made at upkeep and the hinges had at least been greased, with pig fat from the smell. She slithered silently over the gate and dropped nimbly to the ground; landing poised in a half-crouch, with blade at the ready as she peered about.
She saw she was in a short passage that passed under the building above her, and ahead she could see that it opened out into what looked like a cloister of sorts, a square courtyard, open to the sky and surrounded by buildings and a walkway that was lined along this side by a series of decorative arches. She had seen similar architecture before while raiding other human settlements. She shivered, it was cold here, and an eerie mist hung low about the place.
Azure shook her head and grinned as she took in the silence, the mist and the foreboding atmosphere
, "Well, this isn't creepy at all."
Turning, she eased aside the bar that secured the gate and swung it ajar, before leaning out to wave back towards the thick woods. Figures rose from the undergrowth and emerged from the gloom under the trees, moving swiftly to join her.
Ashunara nodded to the scout, flashing her a flashed her a wicked grin as she whispered, "Skilfully done Azure, as always."
The Captain turned to her companions, "Tallis, you and two of the Orcs will remain here. We know not what we're going to run into inside this fucking place and this is our way out, so you hold this gate girl. I want nothing creeping in here behind us, understand?"
The young Dark-Elf looked slightly downcast at being left behind until Ashunara gripped her shoulder, "I'm relying on you Tallis! Hold this ground for us, you hear?"
Looking into the steady eyes of her Captain the younger woman gave a fierce grin and whispered, "None shall pass."
"Good girl."
Nyx thumped her on the shoulder as she slid by, "Watch our backs, lass."
Tallis nodded as the others filed past. Two of the Orcs remained by her, one nocking a viciously barbed arrow into the recurved horn bow it carried while the other gripped its axe, fixed its hide-covered shield in place and gave the girl and cheerful grin. Together the three merged with the shadows by the gate to wait.
Looking about the cloister Ashunara could see that the main chapel building was to her left. She saw there were chimneys atop the wing directly opposite her position and so guessed that to be the kitchens and refectory. The wing to her right was probably the infirmary, while the dormitory probably ran across the top of the gate, above where she was crouched. The place was silent, no smoke wafted from the chimneys and no lamp or candlelight could be seen through the windows.
Nyx grimaced and her tone was as dry as a desert, "Quiet as the grave, obviously nothing at all to worry about, clearly abandoned."
Ashunara grinned, "Yea right, clearly nothing to worry about at all. I mean, what could
possibly
go wrong in a place this cheerful?"
The Captain gestured off to the right, "Nyx, take Azure and two Orcs and sweep that building, I'll take Lashelle and the other two through the refectory over there. If all goes well, we'll meet by the door of the main chapel in a few minutes and go in together."
Nyx nodded, "Aye, Sir."
Ashunara ran her eyes over everyone, "Remember, any of you bastards gets killed without my permission and I'll shove my boot up your arse. Let's go."
Nyx grinned, "Just your boot? Cos you never know, sounds like that might be fun."
"Fuck off Nyx."
