"Being able to speak the language would help." I sigh and get out of the bath and dress in my casual wear that smells of salt and smile again at Katelyn being embarrassed, she didn't seem like someone that was easily flustered.

The range of food was good, at least they have resources here. The more people that leave the less that will be grown, traded, etc.. I am literally the only person in this room at the only Inn that I saw in town, I've been to towns where the Inn was rowdier than the taverns. And I seriously believe this place, is both Inn and Tavern.

Sabina comes out and checks on me, "Do you have something stronger than this?" Some kind of pomegranate and blackberry drink that is good, but a bit too sweet to chug down all day.

"I can get you one, Mom says you've been out at sea for a while and two might do you in for the night.."

"I'm being mothered now?"

"I believe it is more about you being awake when she gets back," she does have a point, but my room is right here, so there are no worries about me getting into trouble, oh, Sabina is probably just as capable of answering my Saedin question as is her mother.

"Any sailors left in town that could help Saedin get the boat here? I'm assuming a town called Riverside would have docks and boats and sailors?"

"Most here know-how. I could get a few and head down there to visit Heran, wouldn't mind seeing where you landed," she smiles and turns, my eyes lift from her backside to her eyes after I notice she stopped, she shakes her head and I act as if I wasn't doing anything at all.

"I'll stop by their house in the morning on my trip around the town to see what's out there and let them know you'll be coming. Do you have maps?"

"The constable would have maps," she replies and I wonder how many years behind they are here compared to home, most things are somewhat comparable, the regional difference being in a warmer climate and the lack of people seems the only major difference, not as many magic users over time would make for some of the things I take for granted.

"Kae?" I hear Sabina and I snap out of my little daydream.

"Ha, sorry got lost there for a moment, I counted four guard-looking individuals in the Hall, is that it for the fighting types? I haven't asked anyone about this place yet to try and figure out what we have."

"Yeah."

"What is trade like?"

"It's random, but with the war and raiders it's been tough. We used to be a stop between Twin Rivers and the Ocean coastline, people fleeing would stop briefly but don't part with the items we need as they needed them also. We live off the land so it doesn't take much, Tremont and Saedin were arguing over the next crops from what mother was saying."

"I'd like to get twin rivers or other places to recognize us as a trading community."

"Us?" Katelyn says walking up behind.

"Well, I'm here so.." she surprised me, I have been saying us and we a bit.

"We have nothing to trade." Katelyn sits with us.

"What did you used to trade?"

"A place to stop and rest before the long journey along the coastline or big fish-fishing, bait, guides, the closest town to where it all happened was a big draw, but if people know there is going to be a raid, they'll wait it out, obviously. The necro war is to our east, many would come just to stand outside and have a story to tell, if we could get permission to clean it out, it could be both an attraction and a copper and tin mine."

"Permission to clear it out? What does that mean, is it dangerous?" This sounds like a tourist town in the middle of nowhere, an odd combination, table that thought for now until after the raiders.

"Ugh, okay, well I think just having ships from here going to the larger cities, buying and selling would put Riverside back on the map. Saedin could make a fair bit more on the Jaguar at an apothecary or collector from a major city."

"Kaethorn is going back in the morning to tell him I will get some to help get the boat from the shore to here."

"You? Volunteered to do something?" Katelyn smirks at her daughter.

"Hey! This is important and I would like to help Aunt Agitha."

"Speaking of important help, is there any ale in here?" I ask and both give me the look.

"What!? It's been a while."

"I'll get it," Katelyn talks as she enters the kitchen area, "Went to talk to Tremont, he is worried about you, but more worried if you aren't here."

"What was he telling them today?"

"The same thing as every week, we need to hang on, things will turn around, we still have enough people to keep going. Twin Rivers is considering sending troops down to us once things settle down."

"I was thinking more, we need to trade, learn how to fight and become self-sufficient."

"Why wouldn't you just go to Twin Rivers; or even beyond to the real cities to the north and east."

"I'm a Ranger."

"A wanderer?" Katelyn's seems to stiffen on the prospect of the word.

"Where I come from a Ranger lives in the woods, communes with animals, maintains plant life and keeps the balance between nature and humans."

"You killed the Jaguar's?"

"They were a threat to everything that lives here, once out of food and live stock, you were next, they weren't acting right, or listening." I think back to the no markings of their territory, I could understand missing their scent at the edges, but we were dead center, where everything should have smelled of them.

"You can talk to animals?" She says with the same unbelieving smile I get often.

"I can reach out and call those that are willing to come to me."

Closing my eyes and reaching out I am surprised at the increased distance. "The bigger animals are already returning to this area. There was also a score of people that stayed in their homes during the town hall meeting, along with a hybrid wolf stuck in a home at the southern edge of town."

"The Masterson's pup, you'll see him running around town. The pup was outside, so I asked her to come see me and led her way. Standing up I went over, opened the door, and sat back down.

"Do you have a bowl of water? The pup is going to come see me."

"Why not." Katelyn passes her daughter and when she returned the pup walked through the door and came over. It was small and had floppy ears and legs that were a bit short to hunt.

"Hey girl," she walked over and laid down on the floor in front of me.

"So how do you talk to her?" Katelyn asks.

"What! You can talk to her?" Sabrina asks shocked.

"That what he says, and he did say she was going to come here," Katelyn replies to her daughter and scratches the hybrid behind the ears.

"For most animals, it is more images or directions, for the smarter animals like pigs, wolves, crows, owls, you can do more, this little hybrid was thirsty."

Katelyn puts the bowl on the floor and the pup looks at me and whines.

"Go ahead."

"Wow, she is a right nightmare most of the time, the Masterson's keep her in the home when they are not there to keep an eye on her."

"She has wolf in her, but I've never seen anything like this."

"She was brought here from the east where they breed different types of pups."

"Time to go home little lady, the cats are gone, you can rest now." Pup barked and ran out the door back to her house.

"That was the coolest thing I have ever seen," Sabina says walking to the door and watching the pup run down the street home.

"Mom, can we keep him" Sabina points at me walking back in, "we'll feed him and give him ale and keep him in a room upstairs." Katelyn laughs and looks at me.

"We'll see, pups make messes inside and chew on the furniture."

"Funny."

"Okay, I appreciate everything you two are doing, and need to get up early so I'm going to head upstairs for the evening, good night, ladies."

"So, can we keep him? The others are going to want to pull him away." Sabina asks her mother.

"We?"

"You can't expect me to just sit around listening to you two every day when there's nobody worth a damn in this town."

"Hmmm, we'll see, you are correct as we cannot claim him as the others will revolt, it is up to him to make the claims."

"Should we be nicer?"

"You have been, any nicer and you would scare him away. He is not a shy boy, and definitely not one that beds every wet hole he comes across." Katelyn smiles at Sabina. "He seems to be very candid, just be yourself,." she gets an eyeroll, "seriously, the only reason you are alone is by choice, you weren't shy with the ones you turned down, don't be shy with the one that you finally decide on."

Having had one girlfriend up through right now, listening to them casually talk about me is surreal, I get the situation, but still, though it makes it easier when you know, out loud, exactly what is wanted.

'Please, the only reason you got Cin was that she took it,' Grayson says as I walk into my room.

'Katelyn did also,' Cinthia says in approval, 'Food, sex and support, men are simple. Go to sleep Kae, you have someone to meet.'

'Minerva?' a bit blurry but I know the gait of her walk towards me. My attempts to go to her don't work as I'm stuck in place so there is nothing to do but wait.

'It is good to see you again Kae, I can see you have finally stopped all of that other nonsense and found yourself a home?'

'Ugh, yeah, I think so.' She is getting closer, but still not clear, I've missed her the most, adoptive mother and mentor since I was seven, 'feels pretty good here.'

'The more you pour into your grove, the stronger you will get Kae. This is our true purpose, not running about fighting land wars.'

'This feels more like saving the survivors of the last war,' I must be dreaming.

'Of course you are dreaming Kae, though, it doesn't make our meeting any less real. I've been waiting for you to settle down. Tell Saedin tomorrow that Syed has been waiting for him to take up his moment as long as I've been waiting for you to take up yours.'

------------

"Kaethorn?" I hear and look up to see Sabina stepping out of the kitchen as I hit the bottom step, lost in my own head thinking about the dreams last night.

"Hmmmm, what are you doing up this early?

"If you are not going to take a horse, you should eat a small meal and I packed a few snacks." Sabina meets me as I enter the common area.

"I'll be back late tonight or tomorrow depending on how long it takes to work my way around town and to scope out the spots to the north that will make a good pinch point. Hmmm, this is good for gruel"

"Gruel? It's cereal with honey and nuts to fill you up without making you slosh around when running about." Sabina nudges me to the side, it's nice when people understand humor. "Anyway, I should get down there around midday."

"Thank you for this Sabina, your mother was correct." I sling the backpack over my one shoulder, pull up my hood and sling Ello over my other shoulder.

"About?"

Stepping over and leaning down her eyes widen and her lips press together as I kiss her forehead. "What was going to be a long day of travel has already been lifted and made better by you being yourself."

"Seriously? You heard that? Gods, just get out of here before I die of embarrassment." Sabina pushes me towards the door.

"I got a talking to also, figured it would better for the both of us if we just act like this isn't weird." Sabina just stares at me as I walk out the door.

Sabina turns to the chuckle from her mother as she comes out of the back room. "With nobody staying here I guess sound does carry more." Katelyn clears the table and starts giggling on her way back through the kitchen door. "Well, at least you got his first kiss."

"That is not funny mother." Sabina frowns after her but will take the small embarrassing victory, "Ignore that this is weird? Oh, yeah, I guess he's not wrong, so that was a yes, right?" Sabina follows her mother into the back. "That sounded like a yes."

It takes half the time to get back to Saedin's home, I call out a few times as I get close.

"Kaethorn!" Heran calls back outside the door with Agitha.

"What brings you back so soon?" Agitha asks and motions for me to enter.

"Sabina is going to bring some people down to help Saedin with the boat."

"You met Sabina and I'm guessing Katelyn?" Agitha smiles, "I should have figured she'd latch onto you."

"Yep, your family just keeps taking me in, staying at the Inn and figured I'd have a look around, where is Saedin?"

"He's down there now making sure the boat isn't pulled back out."

"Ahh, I guess I'll head that way, I have a message from someone named Syed." Agitha and Heran pull back shocked.

"His father? He passed away years ago?"

"Well, it was a dream, and delivered from my mentor who is also no longer with us, so that makes sense." Agitha gives me the look that I should maybe keep going with the information.

"Oh right, He is pleased that Saedin is finally taking up his intended path."

"Is he?" Heran asks.

"Well, one way to get the town back in shape is to have someone like your father helping us trade with the larger cities. The supplies are going to run out if we can't get trade re-established."

"Us, we? You're staying?!" Heran jumps at me.

"Whoa, young lady, are you able to hit ten out of ten yet?"

"What! You just left yesterday." She pushes me but she is the one moved back from it.

"Excuses, excuses, I've got my own town, your father owns a trading company and your mother has the only things worth exporting, all you had to do was shoot ten arrows." Agitha raises an eyebrow and I laugh. "I'll run down and talk to Saedin as this message was meant for him, but there was no reason to keep anything from you two." I start back through the yard and yell back. "They tried to give me a home, you can take it in addition to this one as your village house as I prefer the Inn."

"He moves fast." Agitha comments at me as I disappear into the woods.

"Yeah!" Heran smiles.

"Nah, no, not going to happen Heran, he is much too old for you. Stick with Anders that you've been sneaking around." Agitha shakes her head and walks back inside.

"What did he mean about you?" Heran asks following her, "Are we going to move into town?"

"I believe he means the woodwork," she says with a frown, but then smiles, "I doubt we have much choice as he doesn't seem to give reason or room for argument." Agitha looks around her home and though she loves this place for the memories. "The Gods have clearly attached us to Kaethorn's path so we might as well make the best of it."

"Yes! I prayed for this day to come." Heran hugs her mother.

"So did I baby, I just didn't think it would wash up on our shores and sweep us along like this. If you promise to behave, we should stay at your aunt's Inn and repay her for looking after us for so long."

"Mom, I'm old enough to.."

"Fine, we'll stay here then." Agitha turns and walks towards her room.

"Okay! Okay, I'll leave him alone, but if the Gods agree with him towards me, is that okay?" Heran asks and Agitha nods. Based on Kaethorn's mannerisms each time Heran advances on him she feels that is a safe compromise.

"As long as you are more honest than you've been about Anders. I know Kaethorn saw you two based on his statement and your reaction. That boy has traveled countless hours to be with you, you shouldn't throw him away so casually. Would you have me throw Saedin to the side because Kaethorn is exciting and new?"

"What!" No!" They stare at each other until Heran looks away. "I understand."

"You are young and impressionable and none of this is your fault for being caught up in it dear, just remember those that put your needs first, year after year, before chasing someone that has their own path to follow."

"I have no doubt that your aunt Katelyn and Sabina have eyes for Kaethorn without a nice man like Anders to keep them company."

"After your shocking statement about dad, I get it, I'd die if either of you left for a stranger; no matter how amazing he might be."

"To be honest with you dear, I only agreed to him pursuing you because I've seen his reactions to your advances and knew you were safe. He reacts more like an uncle would than a suitor.."

Finding Saedin setting posts into the sand behind the boat I called out to see him come around the side.

"What news brings you back here so soon? Saedin wades back to shore and shakes my hand.

"I've already talked to Agitha and Heran, looks like I'm going to stay at Katelyn's inn for a while and make these woods my home."

Saedin chuckles, "She is a good woman, but beware, she like her sister is both beautiful and smart enough to snare their prey before you have time to put up a fight."

"I've noticed. Sabina is going to bring a group down here to help you get this beast to the dock in town."

"Okay? I'm guessing you have a reason for this help?" Saedin asks with a look like he already knows.

"You know why, that town is dying and needs trade to survive the next season."

"And I'm to be that trade? How would that work?" He looks at the boat, "she is definitely big enough to reach the coastal ports. What would I be trading?"

"In the beginning, it would be buying and showing that we are still here and intend to stay that way."

"We?" He smiles and nods. "We were going to move there as soon as I got her loaded and ready to sail, I guess this will give us something to do."

"Last night I had a dream of my mentor, she trained me in her grove and came about making my own. At the end, she asked me to tell you that Syed has been waiting for this moment."

Saedin just nods and looks back at the boat again. "It wouldn't surprise me that he bred the jaguars and caused the storm just to make this happen." He gives a short laugh. "My family goes back generations in the sailing and trading, even had a great uncle that was a pirate." Saedin looks up and shakes his fist.

"I'm going to work my way around the east side of the town and up the river to find a good spot to meet our raider friends if they decide to visit."

"I knew after two strides out of the woods that you were not one to mess with, no matter your outward disposition, but don't foolishly throw yourself against them."

"No worries there my friend, I'd like to get all of the gear from your home to the town in the next few days, I have a plan if you have a moment?"

"What's the plan?"

"We have enough bows for every person in town, these bows are special made to reach further than others with less strength needed. Enough hunting arrows to train them and if the raiders do come we will get you one or two more boats to help with your trading company.

"Ahh, a trading company now, that was fast." He smiles and shakes his head.

"Of course, the more status you have, the better the reputation of the town, try and keep up." I shake my head and he gives a quick snort of laughter.

"Of course, and here I was just working to keep this one from being reclaimed, such short-sightedness. From what I understand I'll need Agitha to go with me as most if not all of these sailors will be women and I am not risking any miscommunication."

"Hmmm, already making wise choices, I can see we chose the right person for the job."

"The only person, wait, did you give us the boat so that you wouldn't have to do this?"

"Yes, I looked into the future and said, self, we should give Saedin a boat so that I may lay in his wife's sisters Inn and relax," I reply straight-faced.

"Hmm, if that is the case, I feel I got the better deal, she is as pretty as her sister but headstrong and chaos follows her like a shadow."
