Chapter 7

The next two days were filled with wild preparations. Ships and Domes were being readied for flight, new and experimental weapons were being assembled and tested while various species were girding for battle. The plans for the defense of the League were elaborate, containing lots of moving parts. Trying to stay on schedule was a challenge, but the Berserkers fleet continued to accelerate and time was short.

After two days the first trap dome left with the remaining trap domes leaving the next day. The trap Domes were being outfitted on the way to the asteroid belt. The first two days had only been the loading of food, air, weapons, explosives, or everything they would need to live and fight. With all the materials loaded in the domes, assembly would be accomplished during the trip to the asteroid belt and by the time they arrived everything would be assembled and put in place.

The remaining attack and defensive fleets were being put together and every day a new ship would be launched. During the first two days no one was allowed home and if you needed rest, you did it in dormitories off the assembly area. John was no exception. He worked wherever needed and only went home after the last trap dome was launched. The second change was a minor deviation away from where the trap domes were headed. He called a conference with the Reon, Jageet, Baltazar and his human general in charge. They began to study John's changes and while most dismissed the variations as minor fluctuations the Reon left to do an in-depth analysis to make sure everything was okay.

While they were working John's mind drifted back to making love with Lisa this morning and he called her to see if she could join him for lunch at the 'Slut Hut'. They met there a half hour later and had an intimate lunch. They were just finishing up when John received a call from the Reon commander. "What chairman McKinney noticed earlier was indeed correct. The Berserker fleet split into four parts and only one part of the fleet is still headed our way. The other three sections of the fleet have changed courses and disappeared."

John interrupted, "What do you mean disappeared?"

"As we tracked the splitting of the fleet, each section made a course correction and then vanished from our scopes. It appears that they have some kind of new cloaking device and we a working to break through the cloak. At this point we can only guess where they are going, but we hope to break the cloak soon."

The entire conference room was so quite that you could hear a pin drop. John spoke up, "Does anyone in the conference have any technology or ideas how to break the Berserker cloak?" The silence was not broken and everyone shuffled uncomfortably in their chairs. John knew that many of the species still had technology they had never released to the League and he waited for someone to come forth, but no one did.

John needed to hurry things along, "I know that most of you have technology you have never released and have kept secret. Right now, we need ideas quickly and starting now I would like each species to have a private meeting with the Reon. I would hope that each meeting would discuss ideas for breaking the Berserker cloak. You do not have to give away secrets but help with new ideas. If we can't track the Berserker attack and defend against it, the entire Federation may be in peril."

"Commander of the Reon, please gather your team in conference room 112 and begin meetings with Jageet and following with each species in order of arrival. Everyone, bring your best minds to these meetings. We need ideas and answers quickly."

The conference broke up with the Reon and Jageet heading to room 112. John stayed behind staring at the screens with the projected guess on where and what the Berserkers were doing. John toyed with the idea of recalling all the warships and making their last stand here around Venus Ascending. John sat in the conference room staring at the entire war map, showing where all the League ships were and where they thought the Berserker ships were.

He kept rolling scenarios through his head, but until they had some idea where the Berserkers were and where they were headed it would be foolish to change tactics. His head was spinning and he left the conference room to get a cup of coffee. As he was walking slowly back to the conference room, sipping his coffee when he got a call from the Reon. He sped up his pace and quickly arrived in the conference room.

The Reon and Jageet were drawing lines over the celestial map and John stopped to see what they were doing. When the Reon spotted John, he stopped and began to explain, "John, we are noticing small gravitational changes in four areas and we think these are the Berserker groups of ships. However, we can't be sure at this point, but it is four groups and three are heading towards our trap ships and one group headed towards us, at least what we can determine."

John asked, "How comfortable are you with your estimates of the Berserker locations?"

The Reon and Jageet looked at each other, then the Reon elaborated, "The gravitational variations are small and hard to detect, but they do follow the paths we had projected. So, to answer your question, we feel strongly feel that the trails are accurate."

John turned to look at the routes they had drawn on the board when the Jageet added, "We are going to continue looking for other ways to track the Berserkers, but we needed something that would quickly give us ideas what they are doing."

John turned and asked, "Okay where are they going and when are they going to get there?"

The Jageet responded pointing to groups on the celestial map, "These two groups look to be heading towards our trapping domes and they appear to be surrounding them and they appear to be ready to attach in two days. The other two groups appear to be heading towards us using the same tactic by surrounding the Leagues core group of domes and they will arrive in four to five days."

John mulled all this over and then ordered, "Pass all this information to attack groups, trap domes and the miner groups in the asteroid belts. Tell them to prepare for an attack soon and give the miners the go ahead to pick off stragglers. We need to strengthen our forces around the core League and get them ready for an attack."

John turned to the Reon and added, "Send all this information to everyone and we need updates four times a day. Also continue talking to other species on how to refine our tracking and hopefully find a better way to track the Berserkers."

John stayed in the war room until everyone knew what their duties were. He slowly walked his exhausted body home, but before he got there, he received a message from the Reon, "Battles have broken out in the Trojans asteroid belt. Skirmishes are small but growing." John mumbled so much for two days, walked to his apartment, told Lisa, Erica, and Junior what was going on, kissed everyone, then turned to head back to the war room.
