The Gems Chapter 5
Time: Year 1739 End of Month 8
Location: Riventra in the Derigan Kingdom
The Wooden League
The Gems were back at Dewpoint Inn and in their room from earlier, tired from their travels. Since they had helped fight off the Bandit Wave last week, and did a good enough job, they were one of the few groups to have been mentioned by the media across the city of Riventra. They were paid handsomely for their services and spent the last couple of days sleeping their fatigue away. As always, Sapphire was the first to rise, feeling the warmth of the sun shining through the window. She turned and looked at her teammates, snoring and cuddling in their bed. She felt a twinge of jealousy swirl in her chest, but she pushed it down, her dedication to her team was more important. Even so, they still had a day to start.
"Diamond," she called, shaking the Warrior Class Swordswoman. "Wake up, let's go."
It took her a few minutes before Diamond even moved, but before long, both girls were going to the river to wash up. The sun had risen considerably but Sapphire made a wall of ice to guard their bodies from any prying eyes. They lathered and washed their bodies, scrubbing the blood and sweat away to keep from looking like murderers.
"So, what are you doing with your share?" Diamond asked.
"Clothes, I need more clothes," Sapphire said, a little unsure.
"You wanna go together?" Diamond asked, excitedly.
"You sure?" Sapphire inquired a little tensely. "Don't you want to stay with Emerald?"
"Roly sleeps like a log that fell in the forest," Diamond answered. "He might not wake until noon."
"Oh, well then, I guess we can shop together," Sapphire agreed.
The two went to the marketplace and made a beeline for the apparel section. Surprisingly, there was a lot of items that caught their attention. From shirts and pants to undergarments and lingerie, the apparel section had a delightful selection to choose from. Both girls got extra sets of garments and undergarments for themselves, but Sapphire also slipped in some lingerie without Diamond noticing. With their goods in hand, the girls left the marketplace and returned to the inn. As they entered their room, they saw Emerald still fast asleep. He twisted and turned as whatever dream he had was keeping him busy.
The girls snickered and decided to get some food. If Emerald wasn't up by then they'd wake him. However, to make sure he knew where they were, they left a note before leaving to get something to eat. The inn had a nice café to dine in that was quite similar to the one they stayed at before the town takeover quest. As they ate, a group of men in the Warrior, Scout, and Mages Classes sat at their table without even a bowl to eat out of.
"Morning ladies," one of the guys said. "I'm back to offer you a spot on the team."
"Who were you again?" Diamond asked.
"My apologies, I'm Laegon," he replied without hesitation. "I lead the Silver Strikers. May we know your names?"
"Diamond, Sapphire," Diamond introduced, uninterested. "We're part of The Gems."
"I know," Laegon said. "I heard of your achievements in defending the rearguard at the Post Office. I have a good eye for spotting talent, and I knew you girls were special the moment I laid eyes on you."
"Special?" Diamond asked, tensing up.
"Of course," Laegon smiled warmly, "not everyone can beat an opponent of that caliber with a small group."
"We had help," Diamond replied.
"Yes," he acknowledged. "We can't forget the other adventurers who kept the rest of the Bandits busy."
"Our
leader
, Emerald, helped out immensely too," Diamond said. "He was held in regard at the Post Office also."
"Yes, but we all have our skills that delegates our responsibilities," Laegon deflected.
"And that's all this is," Diamond told him, "A responsibility."
"You don't think you did good work beating that Bandit Spearman?" He inquired.
"If you're going to praise, praise," Diamond frowned. "If you're going to sweet talk, leave."
"I haven't been praising?" Laegon laughed.
"No," Diamond accused.
"Pardon me, I meant no harm," Laegon replied. "My only interest is to make my party stronger."
"Now that I think about it, we have seen you before," Diamond's eyes lit up with recognition. "You called Emerald something along the lines of 'dead weight'."
"And I still think the same," Laegon said grimly.
"Then stuff it," Diamond glared. "You
recruiting
attempts are wasted on us. Find some other girl who's brain dead enough to believe your lies since it's clear you can only get dumb ass bitches to join your party."
"You little bitch!" One of the Warrior Class snarled.
He lunged at her but a hand on his shoulder pulled him back so hard he hit the wall on the other side of the room. Both groups turned to see the innkeeper holding a towel and visibly upset.
"If you so much as put your hands on another one of my patrons," he hissed, "I'll have the garrison hunt you down like animals! Now get out of my sight before I filet you! And don't come back!"
The group eased their way out of the inn with the rest of the patrons watching their every move. Diamond had to disperse her mana because she had equipped her sword the moment she had tensed up. Even Sapphire was a bit shaken up, though she kept it hidden to a degree.
"My apologies, ladies," the innkeeper bowed. "Those ruffians have been going round my inns throughout the kingdom and I've always been a step behind them."
"It's better that you dealt with them," Diamond told him, "because that guy was absolutely going to get a sword through his chest."
"Please don't let this incident mar your view about this me or this inn," the innkeeper begged.
"We won't," Sapphire reassured him. "We've been enjoying our stay here immensely."
He thanked them for their support and patronage and gave them an extra serving of food to take to Emerald as a way of apologizing. They went back up to their room and, unsurprisingly, saw Emerald
still
sleeping.
"Sapphire, I'm going to shop for a new sword," Diamond said. "I want to try to make my own move like you did earlier this month and I'm going to need another sword to do it."
"Oh, do you want me to join you?" Sapphire asked.
"No, I want it to be a surprise," Diamond said as she left the room.
Alone, Sapphire automatically grew uneasy as she looked over to Emerald. She knew he and Diamond were close and was hesitant to even approach him out of fear of breaking up the trust Diamond had in her. But her jealousy spiked in lieu of her fear and Sapphire forced herself to move on with her plan. She changed into her lingerie undergarments and went to crawl into bed with Emerald. Yet, before she could, Diamond walked in. Sapphire froze instantly, caught like a deer facing its demise.
"I'm sorry!" Sapphire exclaimed as she jumped away from the bed. "I-I-I-I was still sleepy so... I'm sorry."
"For what?" Diamond asked, grabbing some coins from the group's coin purse.
"Aren't you and Emerald... together?" Sapphire asked.
"Hm, maybe my shopping can wait for a minute," Diamond said as she returned the coins to the purse. "Let's go in the next room. We wouldn't want to wake the dead with our loud voices."
Diamond led Sapphire to the other room and sat on the bed, patting the spot next to her. After a second, Sapphire relented and sat beside her.
"Okay, so the first thing you should know about Roly and I is that we aren't in a romantic relationship," Diamond started. "We're more friends than romantic."
"Friends?" Sapphire repeated.
"Yeah," Diamond confirmed. "I mean, we're two people of the opposite sex. My clothes are constantly being ripped and Emerald has to touch my body to heal me. We don't have time to be embarrassed about stuff like that, especially on the battlefield."
"That... does make sense," Sapphire replied.
"Second, there might come a day where Emerald, I, or even you find someone interesting," Diamond said. "You're hyped up on Emerald while there's plenty more guys out there to choose from."
"But not like Emerald," Sapphire reminded her.
"Understand this, Emerald is a Healer," Diamond said. "That means he's always thinking about us. But he's also a guy, so when we're not on a quest, what has he been doing?"
"Shopping?" Sapphire said with uncertainty.
"Right, shopping," Diamond nodded. "He's shopping, messing with the supplies, trying, and failing, to recruit new people, planning, or sleeping like he's been cursed by the Malevolent One. He never has the time to be romantically involved with me."
"Oh," Sapphire said with a sigh.
"I'm not saying this to put you down," Diamond said as she hugged her teammate, "nor am I saying this to hurt Roly. But when I asked him his thoughts about you, his response was genuine and sincere. He cares for you as much as he cares for me. But if you want to
be friends
with him like I am, you don't have to get my permission. Roly is ours to share."
"We're sharing him?" Sapphire asked with interest.
"Yeah, do you want to share him now?" Diamond asked mischievously.
"Yeah," Sapphire replied excitedly.
