The artistic beauty of submission - A Mindtech Industries story
TechArt is one of the best selling online magazines which covers everything related to emerging technologies. "After all, isn't creating something new the essence of what art is?" was one of the first sentences written in the issue of 2083. Daphne was a journalist working there and has been tasked to cover a new technology made by Mindtech Industries, the biggest tech company in the world.
"Miss Demers, it's a pleasure to meet you again" Says Daphne with her usual professionalism, even bowing slightly.
"Oh how's my little Daphne doing? I missed you darling." Answered Ms. Demers in a more playful way.
The words of affection caused tinglings in the back of her neck before turning her cheeks reddish. Memories of their last meeting rushed through her mind. She touched her collar bone remembering the sensation of ropes tightening around her skin but her professionalism took over. She moved her hand away quickly realizing her body had been moving without her realizing it.
Miss Demers led Daphne in front of the lab, she placed her hand on the young woman's lower back and told her to enter. A bit suspicious, Daphne entered the room alone. There it was, Dozens of personnel working in unison. They all looked completely identical; they were lean, wearing a black tight suits, no apparent gender and their faces hidden behind reflective glass.
"Miss Daphne, we were expecting you. We are the one who has been chosen as a representative to answer your questions."
Even though Daphne somewhat knew what to expect, she was still surprised by the monotonous nature of the person; They did not sound human at all. They installed themselves in a private office and she prepared her holotab for the interview.
"So, I have to admit, coming up with questions has been quite difficult because I am not sure I understand exactly what you are and the readers probably don't either so why don't you start by introducing yourself and talk a bit about this new..."you"."
"We are #2320, we are what they call a Drone and we are part of a collective called the Hive."
Daphne took a second to think.
"You don't have a name?" She asks with confusion in her voice.
"We do not have names. The purpose of names is for distinguishing individuals. We are not individuals, all of us are one and the same."
"Mmm yeah, that's what I have trouble wrapping my head around. Each one of you used to be a person before, right? What happened to them? Actually, why don't you explain to me the process of becoming a Drone from the start?"
"This particular unit used to be called Elizabeth. She volunteered to be part of the project 2 years ago. Her mind was extracted and then implanted into the hive core. It's very similar to "jumping", when you transfer your mind to a exo-body to control it, except, the brain in which she jumped was already occupied. When her mind arrived in the hive, her mind dissolved into the collective, adding their individuality to the group."
"So she disappeared?" Daphne asked, unable to stop herself from feeling a bit horrified.
"No." It answered quickly. "Everything she once was remains. We are the addition of all of who we once were.
"I see." added Daphne, still not sure to understand but absolutely fascinated. "You said she volunteered? Wasn't she scared of such an extreme experiment?"
"Very much. But she felt her life had no purpose. She had been depressed for the most part and felt lonely for the majority of it. Her mind was unique and was hardly accepted in society. With us, her thoughts are free to be expressed, we do not discriminate or give value to thoughts, all of our thoughts are equal."
"If all your thoughts are equal then how do you make decisions? Is that what the "Queen" is for? Is that an AI?"
The drone gasped strangely. Daphne was surprised by the sudden reaction but the drone started answering.
