Author's Note: I messed up the title so this is technically chapter five onward. I only realized way after I published the first chapters so oopsy.

"It's fine, Chaya. We haven't been able to hang out much since August so it's my fault." Nova hadn't had time to meet up with her in both worlds and he felt pretty bad seeing how excited she was behaving.

Thankfully, the bright-haired girl was incredibly forgiving as she shrugged her shoulders and smiled with all her teeth. "It's all good!"

"I don't want to talk about the past. I want to hear what you think!" She twirled and showed off her outfit. "Do you like my look?"

Nova was used to the younger girl wearing eccentric outfits that matched her heartfelt personality. In summer camp she always wore the trendiest crop tops with glitter words over her chest and bedazzled mini skirts. In-game she wore much the same even as her new avatar.

Today, Chaya was dressed in a coat that reminded him of a porcelain doll with how detailed it was. It was a deep, luscious red that was like red velvet cake with its fluffiness, ruffles, and stitched-on bows. Nova had to hand it to her; the South Asian girl had the world's best taste.

It made total sense that her mother was a personal stylist. She raised an eyebrow, noticing his silence, and puffed out her cheeks. "Well?"

Nova blushed and lifted her left sleeve. "Feels soft." It was pretty and felt like a thick blanket that you would fall fast asleep underneath.

Chaya grinned even bigger at his compliment and pulled back her arm. She clasped her hands together and swung her arms around as she chatted with him. Speaking a mile a minute she told him about how she spent hours and hours grinding to find the coat. It was a rare item that could only be received through beating a boss.

Hearing that Chaya participated in combat that extreme made his brain stumble. The tan girl wasn't the type to fight even when it became necessary to complete a mission. She played Snowdrop Queen solely for the experience of living in a fantasy world. Everything else that came with it was a nuisance she tried to ignore.

It often made him wonder why she bothered to play an MMO in the first place. But Nova learned long ago that questioning Chaya just led to more questions and confusion in the end. She was the type of person who said a lot that you just nodded along with and hummed to. Not that it was a bad thing. It was just HER thing and always would be.

"So," The tan girl asked as they walked away from the stall so Ann had privacy with a customer that had come up. "What are you up to?"

Nova smiled and answered. "Well, I came here with Lottie so we could go to the blacksmith and get some weapons fixed. She saw someone she wanted to talk to so I walked away to give her time."

An animated gasp left the short stack's mouth at the mention of his best friend and she grabbed his arm to hug him. "Lottie's with you?"

"Yes?" The brunette was confused by her sudden closeness. She knew that Lottie was the one who mainly spent his time with these days.

Her behavior became mischievous as she swayed as they walked and whispered cheekily. "Is she your girlfriend now? You two having‐"

Nova glared at her and shut her up with a blunt almost cold. "No."

He wasn't trying to be rude but it was a secret between the pair that he had feelings for Lottie. They came initially when they first met as he was attracted to her avatar.

After some time it went away but over the summer his lust returned to full force. He wished this wasn't the case.

Because he knew for a fact that confessing his feelings would make their relationship awkward if she didn't reciprocate them.

He had gone through it before and it ended with his entire friend group fracturing. Snowdrop Queen was his escape from that time in his life and Nova couldn't risk his escape turning into a nightmare.

So, whenever his feelings for Lottie were questioned, he lied. Chaya just happened to know from the jump that he was lying and made it clear she wouldn't play along with him.

She believed that burying his feelings would make things worse in the long run. That he needed to confess to the girl before she found out and made assumptions.

Chaya frowned but didn't let go of him as she spoke in a much softer tone. "I wasn't trying to be pushy. I just wanted to know since we haven't had any time to talk or hang out in how many months? Four?"

Hearing this made Nova feel like shit. He hadn't been paying attention to his friendship with Chaya and it was obvious he hurt her.

Even with her saying everything was all good her words said otherwise. He had no excuse for it either. He just didn't respond to her out of laziness.

A type of laziness that wasn't out of cruelty but due to being worn down to the point he couldn't move. He couldn't think.

All he could do was go to school and log on whenever he could. Degrading his real-world relationships into a state that he felt awful to admit happened.

"I have no excuse," Nova said before swallowing thickly.

He didn't want to explain why as it didn't matter right now. To the kind-hearted girl it would be meaningless.

When she had been such a good friend to him she deserved to be treated the same way. Nova had taken her sweet nature for granted and she was still here hugging him.

"Life's been a lot but I should have responded and kept you up to date. I'm sorry for the worry and stress I probably caused you." The brunette apologized with all the sickly, potent regret he could muster.

Chaya looked at him with a sympathetic glimmer in her eyes and patted his cheek with her hand. Her bedazzled nails scratched his face, tickling his skin as she stared at him.

The pat was gentle as was her smile as she let go of his arm. With her expression rapidly changing.

"Is it your mother?" He didn't have the chance to answer so she nodded and shrugged. "Then you don't have to explain yourself."

"Mom's been getting on my behind about everything I told you about before and it's reaching a breaking point. It's just been a lot." His life had become a mess and he didn't want to drag her into it.

"But still, I could have texted you to clear the air and make it right." He didn't want Chaya to think that she was wrong for feeling hurt.

Chaya nodded and patted his shoulder. "It's alright. You don't have to beat yourself up to make me feel better. I forgave you months ago." Her lip quivered and formed a cute, sympathetic little grin his way.

"You forgive too easily," Nova muttered half heartedly.

Chaya shook her head and waved her long sleeves in the air dramatically as she protested his response. "No, it's normal for friends to fight and have misunderstandings."

"As long as we talk it out when it happens it becomes water under the bridge for me." She further explained making him feel emotional.

He felt incredibly lucky to have someone like her in his life. Someone who was so forgiving despite him essentially ghosting her without any warning. If he'd done that to Lottie she'd punch him in the jaw.

The thought of the dual-toned woman seemed to conjure her back up as he saw her walking over. He wasn't sure if he should tell Chaya they could talk later or bring her along with them. She wasn't very close to Lottie but had no problem speaking to her casually.

She noticed his troubled expression and smiled. "It's alright. I'll leave you two alone." She turned to leave. "Just make sure to text me later."

After Chaya left, the dark-skinned man spent the rest of his time with Lottie. She had spoken to Ava X and the woman was very receptive to what the girl had to say, even offering up her phone number.

She was so excited she almost forgot what they had come there for. Nova felt good seeing his best friend so happy.

The joy in her eyes and voice was evident as she told him the conversation word by word. When they got back to their guild base, the place player guilds called home, she was practically buzzing with energy from the encounter.

He smirked as she mentioned telling her real-world friends about it as they entered their base and were met with the smell of cooking food.

This meant that one of their other guild members had logged on and Nova wasn't sure how to feel. They weren't exactly close to the others.

The person in question peeked their head out of the kitchen and Nova felt his mood deplete. It was a player by the name of Brook, a guy with an anamorphic avatar who was the oldest out of the group.

Brook was someone who kept to themselves and was mute most of the time. He was a nice enough guy. It was just that he wanted it to just be him and Lottie without their being a third wheel.

Hell, a fourth due to the fact they had another member who hadn't been logging on lately. He kept this to himself however as he knew it would be rude to mention.

Lottie was more or less the same feelings-wise. But she did hang out with Brook in the past so they were acquainted. Not like how he and Chaya were though. She noticed the animal man and waved at him.

"Brook!" The girl said with a pleasant smile. "How are you doing?"

The beefy man came to stand in front of the pair, towering over them at his height of seven feet. His mane of white hair and piercing gold eyes gave off the fantastical vibe of the game perfectly. Brook was someone who dug deep and really got into his character with a grin.

"Lottie, it's good to see you. I've been taking care of my son lately so I've been unable to get on as often as before." Brook explained with the fake deep voice he put on to match his avatar.

It was jarring at first but Nova had grown used to it. The tall man noticed him and exclaimed with glee. "Nova! How are you, son?"

Being called that by Brook was weird as the man was only in his mid-twenties and acted like an old man. He knew it was part of the act and having an oopsie baby recently didn't help the matter. Still, he found himself withholding a full-body cringe at how Brook spoke to him.

"I'm doing good besides some family stuff." To his utter dismay, everyone in the guild knew his issues and had varying opinions on them.

This was due to him unloading one day and being overheard which led to an intervention of sorts. He hated it. "It's nothing to cry about."

Brook rubbed his chin and accepted his dismissal with a supportive clap on his shoulder. "Well! I'm glad both my companions are alright."

"I have to ask, have any of you heard from Tulip?" The mention of their missing guild member made the trio exchange similar glances.

Tulip was their fourth and final guild member who joined the latest. She was incredibly bubbly and pretty much a ditz.

The blonde was their healer and was the person they depended on in huge events. This was why her absence as of late had gone from worrying to annoying.

Brook sighed. "I'll send her a message and see what's going on."

"That would be great," Lottie said with a relieved smile.

She looked around and noticed what the burly beast had made. "I never knew you could cook like this. Is it because of the baby?"

The mention of Brook's son made the man swell with pride. His eyes glimmered as he spoke about the infant. He was born two months early and sick but was the strongest child you'd ever meet.

The dark-skinned teenager could see that the man had found his purpose by having a kid even if it was stressful. Brook told them about how everything was different now but he loved it.

He cooked and cleaned and learned so many things as his girlfriend rested. Hearing how happy his guild mate made the brunette's heart soften towards him a little.

He sounded like he had been working so hard as of late but still found time to log on. He was that reliable of a player even though he didn't have to and could have left them hanging.

That made Nova respect him quite a bit. "You sound so busy these days. Have you had time to participate in any missions as of late?" The man sounded like he was running on less than an hour of sleep.

"I haven't," Brook said with a tired sigh of disappointment.

Nova thought before deciding to throw the man a bone. He looked at him and Lottie before asking. "Would you guys like to go on a run?"

"Didn't the blacksmith say you can't use your sword for now?" The sherbet-haired girl asked, twirling her hair around her fingers.

Seeing this made his voice catch in his throat and his gaze drifted to her lips. They were glossy from the lipstick her avatar came with, a dark pink that had a shimmer under the beautiful sun.

Lottie's eyes looked glossy as she cocked her head, awaiting his response patiently. He thought of what Chaya said earlier and gulped. He didn't know when his feelings for the girl changed but they went back and forth often.

There was just something about her that made his body shiver and his heartbeat skyrocket. And this was just from her game avatar.

"We can do a more low-key mission. One that won't shatter my weapon for the fifteenth time this year." Nova finally managed to say.

Lottie crossed her arms and hummed as she considered what he was offering. She frowned and said with a pout. "So, no fighting then?"

"Goodness gracious you are bloodthirsty my dear friend," Brook said with a deep chuckle that made him sound ten years older than he was.

Lottie blushed as the beast called her out. The girl loved fighting mobs and bosses that the game programmed to come at them.

She was among the deadliest fighters he had ever met with her willingness to go to levels most players wouldn't. She saw everything as useless code.

If they weren't in a virtual reality game he would find this alarming. It was pretty common for certain players to take on a murder hobo-type personality and Lottie just had added her spin. She wasn't cocky about her behavior but anyone who knew her was well aware of it.

That's part of what made their friendship begin to blossom. He had been friends with girls who could throw a punch before. But Lottie was more than tough. She was badass and took pleasure in making sure that her strength quadrupled with time.

She wanted to be the deadliest player in all of Snowdrop Queen and he admired her for that. "Once I can use my sword we can go crazy."

"Well. Fair enough!" Lottie conceded no doubt thinking about all the orc men she would smash under fists and stab with her crossbow bolts. If she wasn't so attractive, the brunette would gulp from her intensity.

Brook grinned and held out a plate of cookies he had made when they were coming in. They looked delicious with a fluffy texture that reminded the teenager of cake more than cookies.

It was amazing just how realistic the game was at portraying the texture, color, and aroma of delectable treats from the real world. You wouldn't believe it was all pixels unless someone told you if you saw them outside the game.

"You two can have some before you go. Conserve your energy as we prepare for this adventure!"
