The end of the work day came and I let out a sigh of relief. It was a hot, humid day, and the customers I was waitressing were keen to take their discomfort out on someone else. I moved to the breakroom and took a moment to just stand still, wiping sweat from my forehead. My co-workers came into the room chatting, startling me.
"Hi Seong," said Jen, "man, that shift just about killed me. Got any plans for the weekend?"
"No. Well, I thought about going to the movies, but I think I'd feel too embarrassed by myself."
"Yeah, true." She started talking to one of the other waitresses, so I got my things together and started heading out, saying goodbye. I filled the drive home with music and let my mind wander.
I went into my apartment half wishing I had someone waiting for me, but it was quiet and empty regardless. After dropping my bag down the kettle was my first stop, and the clatter of getting a tea prepared instantly made me feel better. While the water was heating up I went into my bedroom and unzipped the back of my waitress uniform, then collapsed face first onto the bed. I brought my hands up beside my head and groaned softly. I didn't want to get up again. But the kettle was starting to grumble.
I sat up with my eyes closed and sniffed. There was a faint rotten smell that I hadn't noticed earlier. I cringed a little at the idea of having to search nooks and crannies for something that had crawled into the apartment to die. Putting the thought aside for now, I stood and walked back to the kitchen. Then I paused. I was just registering that something had moved back in my bedroom.
I told myself it was probably a cat that had got in somehow, though aware that it could also be a burglar; crime rates were high in this area. There was a sound from the bedroom and I repressed panic. Moving carefully and keeping my eyes fixed to the doorway, I went to the counter and slowly, silently, pulled a knife from its holder. I didn't plan to stab anyone, but I thought it could scare them off. If it was a robber. The phone was further away, so still moving extra carefully but quickly now I went around the dining table to the corner of the room. I picked it out of its cradle on the wall, my hand wobbled and it fell out of my fingers. It clattered to the floor and I felt my blood go cold. My head whipped around to look at the doorway and I saw a dog.
That threw me; confusion and relief flashed through my mind, but confusion won out when I did a double take and realised it wasn't a dog. Immediate fear clutched at my stomach when I saw it wasn't any animal I knew -- in fact the word that came to mind was 'goblin'. It had greenish weathered skin, heavy musculature on an almost human body, but crouched on all fours. It had no eyes and a small snout wrinkled in a snarl to show off jagged yellow teeth.
The rotten smell I'd noticed earlier wafted towards me, breaking my reverie. I gripped my knife tighter in a sweat-slick hand, and bent down slowly to retrieve the phone. The thing's head tilted and it growled softly. I froze. It took a step into the room, moved its head as if searching, then stilled. My hand was shaking, still reaching for the phone, as I held my breath. Suddenly it bounded across the room, and I cried out as it knocked the dining table into me. It scrambled to get up from the collision, but I recovered faster and ran out of the room. I reached the front door and got it open, but the creature rammed me from behind and I rebounded painfully off the door, falling to the ground. Desperately I crawled out the door before it could get me again, then somehow regained my footing and bolted down the corridor. I heard it galloping after me. The stairway came up and I flew down it, twisting my ankle in my rush but not slowing down. I reached the ground floor, running across the empty foyer to the exit, but the creature was so close behind me I barely made it through the door before it did.
And then it caught me. It grabbed me around the waist, and unfazed by my struggling threw me over its shoulder. I screamed for help, but it was quickly running down the street, one arm holding me in a vice grip I couldn't break. Before I knew what was happening it plunged down some entryway into the sewers. It was dark and it stunk, but for some reason it was that moment I realised I'd managed to hold onto my knife.
The monster was running quickly again, bouncing me around and making it difficult to know up from down, and without much thought I wildly swung the knife down. I was moving around too much though, and instead of penetrating flesh it slid down to make a long shallow cut. But it did the trick, and the creature howled in pain and let me fall to the concrete. This time in my efforts to escape I did drop the knife, but I was focused on running and didn't care.
Whimpering echoed through the tunnel. And then it turned to a low, angry sounding growl. I stumbled in fear, then realised I couldn't see a way out. I looked around desperately, but there was no light source to show where we'd come in. Ahead of me, I saw what I thought was a caved in wall. I got closer and could make out what was actually a crudely carved archway. It had to lead somewhere, so I ran through, and sure enough I could see a red light illuminating the way from somewhere beyond.
Rocky debris littered the path, and the dim light made it difficult to keep up my frantic pace without stumbling. It was also humid down here, and all the exertion had me covered in sweat. Even the walls looked like they had water dripping down them. I steadied myself by putting my hand on the wall beside me and then recoiled. It was slimy, warm and soft, feeling alarmingly similar to flesh. With the red light, it looked unnervingly visceral.
The light got stronger the further I went, but the passageway was becoming narrower. As it looked more and more like the cave-like walls would close in too much for me to progress, I began to wonder if I'd made a mistake coming through here. But the thought of turning around, of going back to that monster waiting in the dark, filled me with a cold terror.
I went on until I reached what was really just a crevasse. I peered through the gap, at first seeing only a haze lit by bright light. But I could see it was an open space, so I decided to try and squeeze through. I got a leg and arm in easily, then to my dismay had to get up close and personal with the slick and fleshy walls as I pushed the rest of my body through, getting my rear end stuck momentarily. I flopped out the other side into a passageway.
