A mighty bellow rippled across the forest.

Lily tensed as the canopy shook and flocks of colorful birds fled into the sky. A vast expanse of green surrounded the young woman. She was used to the whistle of wind through tree branches, the chirping of birds and insects, and the occasional animal call. For a moment, it all paused in the wake of that great roar.

"Karunnos?" Lily said.

Such a cry only came from the god of this forest -- Karunnos. Lily had never even seen him in person, but as a priestess, she nonetheless lived in service to him. The priestesses of Elkwater Shrine lived simple lives here, honoring the god of the forest and protecting his lands from those that would stain its purity.

Isolated as they were, the forest never left them wanting. Lily carried a bowl with her, filled with ripe, plump berries as she picked them fresh off the branch. She popped one into her mouth and savored the sweet, tart flavor.

As the youngest of the shrine keepers, she was forbidden from tending to him directly. The elder priestesses were the ones to travel into the heart of the forest where Karunnos resided. However... Lily had a feeling that would all be changing soon. In the years since the priestesses took her in, she'd grown from a mere girl into a budding young woman, and she performed her duties to the forest with care and devotion.

Perhaps they would finally set her on the path to becoming a true forest keeper.

A sudden chirp from nearby broke Lily's train of thought. Perching upon her shoulder, a magpie with plumage of white and blue chirped and trilled at her. Lily chuckled and scratched behind its neck.

"What is it, Avi? Did Dahlia send you over?"

The magpie chirped. Her connection to the forest and nature gave Lily a degree of understanding with the wildlife, although it was untrained compared to the elder priestesses. She sensed the bird's intent and nodded.

"She wants me back at the shrine?" Lily asked.

Avi thrummed and stretched out its wings.

"I see... Tell her I'll be back in just a moment, okay Avi? I was just picking some berries for jam. Here!" She flicked a berry into the air, which Avi happily snapped up.

With a thankful chitter, Avi flew off towards the shrine.

Lily sighed and ate another berry to calm her nerves. It couldn't be a coincidence, right? Karunnos was calling -- it was their duty as priestesses to tend to the needs of their god. She was freshly of age, and the leader of their order was calling upon her.

Chewing her lip, she gathered another few berries and followed Avi's trail back towards the shrine.

...

Elkwater Shrine was carved into the base of an enormous Eldergrey tree. Not only a place of worship, it served as a home for the forest priestesses, where Lily had spent the last five years of her life since being taken into their ranks. Its mighty trunk stood wide enough to comfortably house the three of them -- the inside was arranged into different floors that served as their living spaces, and at the very top floor was where they prayed, worshipped, and performed rituals.

Lily hurried into the shrine, holding the bowl of berries tight to her chest as she looked around.

"Mother Dahlia! I'm back!" she called.

Inside, a tall older woman stood by a window, a contemplative look on her face as she gazed across the forest. Turning towards Lily, she addressed her with a soft smile. Dark green robes weaved into a pattern of leaves flowed across her slender form, blending with the olive tan of her skin and waist-length brunette hair. A crown woven from white and pink flowers sat atop her head.

Priestess Dahlia. Although her face held some telltale wrinkles of age, she still looked spry and youthful for a woman in her late forties. Lily still thought she was beautiful -- not just for her age, but as a woman in general.

"Out for a snack, dear Lily?" Dahlia smiled.

Lily set down the bowl of berries and nodded. "Y-yeah, I was gonna make some jam with it later," she said. Her eyes darted around the shrine anxiously, butterflies fluttering in her stomach. Those berries were the last thing on her mind. "You, um... Heard that sound earlier too, Dahlia?"

"But of course -- when Karunnos calls, all the forest hears it. Do you know what he calls for?"

"He... Calls for comfort? For reverence?" Lily chewed her lip.

Dahlia nodded. "We priestesses of the forest serve him with our spirits, our minds, our lives... And our bodies," she said. Her sandals clacked along the wooden floor as she approached Lily, appraising the girl from head to toe. "Do you understand what all of that entails?"

Lily merely stood frozen before her gaze, heart racing in her chest. She'd been taken in when she was just a girl -- running into the forest after being discovered stowed away on a trader's carriage, all to flee from a father who beat her and a mother who planned to marry her off as soon as she could. Back then, she didn't care where she was going. She didn't even care if she died. Alone and hopelessly lost in the great forest, she would've surely succumbed to the elements... If not for the priestesses finding her.

She had found her true family, and a new purpose to devote herself to.

Of course, she didn't understand all the implications. As the years went on, however... Lily had an inkling of what it meant to give their bodies in service to the forest god. She remembered the elder priestesses leaving to take care of Kurannos, and then coming back in the night with ragged hair, dirtied robes, and smelling of sweat.

"I... I think I do, Mother Dahlia. But I'm still too young to give myself fully, am I not?" She asked, hoping desperately that Dahlia would give a different answer.

Seeming to notice the poor girl's anxiousness, Dahlia chuckled. "Perhaps not, dear Lily. In all ways but one, you've proven yourself as a devotee to Karunnos and his great forest. To think it's been so long since you came to us... You are not a little girl anymore. You are of age -- and if willing, I believe you are ready to take the next step on your journey as a priestess."

"Yes! Of course I'm willing!" Lily blurted, cheeks burning red as she stopped herself. "I-I'm sorry, just -- by the forest, I've waited so long for this, Mother. I've worked so hard to prove myself, to be a real priestess... I want this. I'm ready."

"Ready, you say?~" Another, huskier female voice chimed in.

Ivy, Dahlia's second-in-command at the shrine, emerged from upstairs with a knowing smile on her lips. Her soft, curvier self was draped in robes of black and violet, endowing her with a matronly plumpness. The swell of her bountiful chest bounced faintly with each step. She kept her dark hair in a short bob-cut, matching her dark eyes and outfit. "Sorry; I just couldn't help listening in!" she said.

Dahlia rolled her eyes playfully. "Ah, Ivy. I suppose you would be happy to explain the rest?"

Ivy grinned, addressing Lily with her hands on her hips. "Sure! So, what do you wanna know, little leaf?"

"I, well..." Lily chewed her lip and blushed, tapping the ends of her fingers together. She had an idea of what she wanted to say, but couldn't figure out how to put it together without sounding silly. "This ritual, where I'll be seeing Karunnos in person... I-I'll... I'm to please him with my body, am I not?"

Ivy nodded. "Aye, I'm glad I don't have to explain that much at least. Now that you're of age sweetie, that'll be one of your new responsibilities. You've kept yourself pure, yeah?"

Her blush deepened. Although the shrine priestesses lived together in the forest, it wasn't unheard of for travelers or merchants to stop by for camp or trading. There were opportunities to sneak away and break her oath... But she'd never given in. "Y-yes, I have. No man or woman has sullied me."

"Good girl~" Ivy chuckled and ruffled up the younger woman's hair. "Then what are we waiting for? If she's ready, I don't see any reason to keep our god waiting."

"Ivy, please. There is still one important matter left to discuss," Dahlia said. She turned to Lily, regarding her with a gentle, motherly smile, softly stroking her flushed cheeks with the back of her finger. "To complete your journey, something must be sacrificed. That is why I give you one last chance to reconsider... To decide if this is truly what you want."

Lily tensed, both from her words and her tender caress. "A sacrifice?"

"Karunnos is gonna breed you, little leaf." Ivy spoke up before the other priestess could respond. "No use beating around the bush, right? She's young and fertile, and there's no chance she won't be carrying a demi-god when he pumps her full."

Somehow, Lily blushed brighter. She was to be a mother? She was to be pregnant with the child of a god?

Dahlia sighed. "...That is correct. Lily, this is a sacred ritual of fertility. When we mean to give him our bodies, we mean that in every sense."

"By the forest, I... Am I going to be bred every time I tend to him?"

She shook her head. "No -- that is where the sacrifice comes in. Mere mortals are not meant to carry the children of gods. It's only through our magic that both mother and child can survive, but it comes at a cost. Lily, if you go through with this, you will never again be able to bear children. That is the sacrifice. Are you truly, honestly sure in your heart that this is what you want?"

Lily's head raced with all the new information. In truth, she'd never even thought of whether or not she wanted to be a mother -- she figured it would be out of the question anyway if her life was devoted to the shrine. Unconsciously, her hand drifted to her lower stomach. She imagined herself full and pregnant, soon to give birth to the child of a god.

It was scary, yes... But somehow, it felt right. Lily pledged long ago to dedicate her life to Karunnos and his great forest. What greater service could she provide than carrying his heir?

Hands bunching into fists, face tightening in determination, Lily nodded. "I've already decided. I want to be a true priestess of the forest, like you and Ivy. This is what I want," she said, looking into the eyes of her adoptive mother.

Dahlia smiled. Suddenly, she pulled the girl into a tight hug, holding her against her bosom. "Very well, Lily. We'll make the preparations soon, I'm just... I'm just very proud of you," she said, nuzzling her face into Lily's hair as she squeezed.

Lily hugged her tight, tears of pure joy brimming at the corners of her soft blue eyes. "T-thank you... for everything..."

They both grunted as Ivy joined into the hug with a cackle. "By the forest, you two are so sappy! Now come on -- it won't be much longer before sunset. We should get ready!"

...

Preparations for the ritual took place on the topmost floor of Elkwater Shrine, at the very top of the great tree. It provided an incredible view of the surrounding forest, especially now as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting the sky in a bright scarlet glow.

Lily stood patiently with her arms outstretched. Stripped completely naked, the young woman stood still as Dahlia dipped her paintbrush back into a pot of red paint, making another long stroke down her smooth tummy. The markings stretched from her waist, up her chest, and stopped just below her cheeks. Practiced brushstrokes marked her body, and they all seemed to trail back down into a symbol on her lower belly.

Her womb, Lily realized.

"I think Karunnos is going to be very pleased with this offering~" Ivy chuckled, practically eating Lily up with her eyes as she leered.

"Could you please be quiet for just a minute? I'm nearly finished here..." Dahlia said. The strokes of her brush ended just above the soft blonde bush above her womanhood.

Setting her brush down, Dahlia stood to inspect her handiwork, eyeing the girl from head to toe with a smile tugging her thin lips.

"I-Is it finished?"Lily asked.

Dahlia nodded. "Give the paint a minute to dry and we can be on our way. Are you sure you're ready for this?"

"I know I'm ready for this, but I do have one question. If I've never laid with a man before, then how am I going to know how to please Karunnos?" Lily asked.

"Oh, you don't need to worry about that! We've never given you a new task without teaching you the basics, right? We'll be right alongside you every step of the way, little leaf~" Ivy winked at her.

Once again, her cheeks flushed as she tried to imagine what that would look like.

Night fell across the forest by the time they set out. Dahlia and Ivy used their magic to summon trails of fireflies that lit the way ahead, creating a path of dancing, cerulean blue stars to guide them. Lily hurried behind them in a much shorter set of robes than usual. It stopped just barely below her waist and felt more like a short dress. She shivered as a chilly breeze caressed her bare thighs.

"It's cold..." Lily groaned.

"Don't worry little leaf, you'll be warmed up real soon," Ivy smiled, carrying a sack filled with supplies for the ritual.

No matter how much Lily tried to calm herself, she just couldn't stop her heart from racing as they ventured. The core of the forest was forbidden to all but the high priestesses, for it was where Karunnos resided. She only ever saw the edge of it a few times when she ventured especially far from the shrine.

Lily stopped suddenly, noticing a warm red glow from underneath her robes. It emanated from her body paint. "M-Mother, is that supposed to happen?"

"Yes, that's normal. The heart of the forest is dense with Karunnos's magic, and those markings are meant to react to his presence. They'll glow brighter the closer we get. You might notice other changes, as well," Dahlia explained.

Lily decided not to press on about what those "other changes" could be.

Eventually, they came to the edge of the forest's heart. A high wall of thorny veins stood in their way, woven tight basket and leaving no gaps for anything to slip in or out.

Dahlia waved her hand, and the vines trembled in response. The network of interconnected knots moved like slithering tendrils, shifting and writhing out of the way to create an opening in the vine wall.

Finally, the trio descended into the heart of the forest.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Dahlia sighed.

Lily's natural curiosity took hold as she looked around. There was so much she wanted to see now that she could explore the deep forest, but that could wait for another time -- she didn't want to lag behind the other priestesses and end up getting lost.

Pulsating, incandescent blue flowers illuminated the trail ahead.

Just as Dahlia said, the markings on Lily's body came alive with steady pulses of crimson light. It took her a moment to realize that she didn't feel cold anymore either. If anything, she felt rather warm, even with the chilly winds occasionally brushing past them.

The pathway took them to a wide stone platform that acted as a clearing, with a pit in the center. It struck Lily as a bit odd, seeing something so clearly man-made in the middle of this thriving, untouched land. It looked as though nature was constantly trying to reclaim it though, with vines twisting along the broken stone pillars jutting from the corners, or the plants growing through cracks in floor tiles.

"We're here." Dahlia sighed. Setting down her backpack, she began pulling out objects for the ritual, starting with a blanket that she unfurled across the floor. Meanwhile, Ivy dumped the contents of her bag into the pit, which turned out to be kindling for a fire.

Lily stood awkwardly, fidgeting with her hands as the two older priestesses prepared for the ritual. "Is there anything I should do?"

Ivy shook her head. "For now, just sit back and try to relax," she said. Conjuring a tiny fireball on her fingertip, she lobbed it into the pit with a casual flick. Firewood crackled as the flame slowly engulfed it, soon growing into a roaring bonfire that spat glowing embers into the sky and cast dancing shadows across the ground.

The last item Dahlia took from her bag was a winding wooden horn, coiled in veins that bloomed tiny flowers. "Are you ready, Lily? Once I summon him, there's no turning back."

"I'm ready, Mother. I didn't come this far just to turn back now," she said.

Dahlia nodded. After a moment of collecting herself, the elder priestess put the horn to her lips and blew -- producing a deep, rippling tone, sounding like an animal's roar rolling across the forest.

A rumbling bellow came in return. The same sound Lily had heard just earlier. "That's him... Right?"

"Indeed. Karunnos is on his way," Dahlia said. The elder priestess took out two flasks from the pouch on her side and poured them into a bowl, one containing water and the other spilling a thicker, pink substance. She then emptied a small sack of what looked to be red and violet tea leaves into the mixture and began stirring. "Crimson bloodsap and lover's leaf," she explained. "It'll make this easier for you." Dahlia handed her the bowl.

"I... Okay..." Lily stared at her face reflecting in the liquid. Swallowing down any lingering doubts, she tipped the bowl back, closed her eyes, and drank. There was nothing to fear -- she trusted her adoptive family with her life. The drink was sickly sweet and fragrant, but it went down easily. She emptied the bowl and sighed.

It started with a warm tingling in her belly that slowly flowed across the rest of her body, making her muscles relax and her eyes flutter. The heat coalesced between her thighs. Aching, rumbling desire bloomed in her loins, and suddenly, the young woman felt hot. "Can I..." she panted, looking down at her robes. "May I take this off?"

Ivy grinned, leaning back against a broken pillar. "Aye, you won't be needing them anyway."

Lily frantically tore it off and tossed it away without a care. When the breeze brushed past her body, she expected to shiver but didn't. If anything, the slight chill came as a relief with the heat coursing through her veins.

Another mighty bellow came, but it didn't sound nearly as far away. Karunnos was getting closer.

Heavy footsteps shook the ground.

Lily dug her hands into the blanket and squeezed, knuckles white with intensity. She'd waited so long for this moment. Most mortals went their whole lives without laying eyes on a god... Let alone expecting to bear the child of one.

The footsteps grew closer and heavier.

She'd fantasized often about what Karunnos even looked like. Would he appear like a man? Like a beast? Something in between the two?

Finally, a silhouette emerged from the bushes, its appearance slowly unveiled by the bonfire's glow. Two features stuck out immediately -- the god of the forest towered over Lily, or any of the priestesses for that matter, standing at least eight feet tall. An enormous set of antlers jutted from either side of its head, their many branches reaching towards the canopy like bony fingers.

Lily fell to her knees.

Was he a man? Was he a beast? No... he was something else entirely. He was a god. Gods weren't meant to be understood. They were meant to be worshipped and revered by those who followed them.

The dull thud of Karunnos's footsteps turned into heavy clops as he stepped up onto the stone platform, bearing himself in full to the wide-eyed young priestess. The bottom half of his body was purely beastlike, with muscular legs and thighs covered in dark brown fur that ended in hooves. Above his waist, Karunnos appeared more like a human; the fur turned lighter and thinner, revealing a toned, rippling chest and stomach. Above his strong pecs was a tuft of fluffy white fur. His head was that of a great stag, brown eyes flickering across the three priestesses.
