Rose Meadows, eight hours into her shift, had to fight the urge to run out the door screaming. The day started off well enough, in fact it started off fantastic. She woke up luxuriating in the arms of her lover, who evidently was not a morning person if the cute snores and total lack of response to any all external stimuli were anything to go by.
She made a hearty breakfast which she made sure to share with Mr. Milchick, her landlord and more importantly a grandfather figure. It was there that she took the time to have a long honest conversation about her feelings and more importantly expectations regarding Emily moving forward. Even if it brought her down to earth a little she had to admit that the talk with Mr. Milchick helped her process her feelings and settle some unrealistic expectations she might have been subconsciously harboring.
Questions like, What did she want next? A relationship? Or a friend with benefits? What happens when creepy Greg becomes a factor again? Was Rose even in the right mindset for a relationship? What does a relationship with nurse hours and GED classes look like?
She didn't get a chance to ponder these questions properly because she got a call from the clinic. There was a big accident involving a trailer and a pile up on the main road leading to town, over 40 people injured. Lode tree was a small city with around 3 small hospitals and a few clinics so they offloaded patients to the clinic Rose worked in. Obviously they were short staffed and needed all hands on deck.
Mr. Milchick who was sitting across from Rose at the time didn't hesitate, he pulled on his jacket and told Rose he would be waiting for her in the parking lot.
There was no time for Rose to dress inconspicuously as usual, she had to make do with a simple shirt and jeans. It was an emergency anyway she reasoned, no one would care what she looked like.
With hindsight this was perhaps the biggest error in judgement Rose had ever made, and that was saying something considering she had lost a full ride scholarship.
On the way to the medical center they observed no less than 3 ambulances screaming past them. Roadblocks had been set up at various intersections keeping the roads clear of anyone apart from the ambulances and medical personnel which meant Rose had to flash her work badge twice for them to be allowed past. When they pulled up to Westside Medical Centre Rose had to do a double take at the chaos that met them.
Westside was located at the edge of town, near the decommissioned factory. Its original purpose was to treat the factory workers owned by the Crescent Medical group. When the factory shut down and Crescent moved towns, the clinic doctor at the time didn't want to move. Anette Taylor Colson had found a home in Lode tree and wanted to settle permanently so she bought the clinic for cheap and became one of three operational clinics at the time. That was over twenty years ago.
In the five years Rose had worked here, working from junior CNA to assistant floor manager she had never seen the parking lot of Westside look like the disaster zone it resembled now.
A bus was parked with its rear doors open vomiting bloody people in various states of distress. Rose could see her fellow nurses had set up triage outside to deal with them, two nurses were evaluating and tagging according to level of injury and directing the code black's into the first floor which had apparently become an extension of the ER. It was a good start but she could already see where cracks were appearing.
The two nurses were juniors and they took too long to form a cursory diagnosis, to make matters worse the EMT's sitting around looking dazed and lost. There was so much noise, screaming, crying and sobbing into a cacophony that made communication practically impossible.
Rose had felt a headache coming as she watched a resident fumble with a basic stint as their patient screamed in pain.
Some police officers had set up a cordon to keep out the news cameras and distraught arriving family members trying to see their loved ones. It was there that they stopped Mr. Milchick's car, indicating they should go around or park elsewhere.
Rose didn't hesitate. She flashed her badge and took off towards the junior nurses and residents.
On her way she snagged a bullhorn on a police car, ignoring the shouts, she climbed the car onto the bonet. Some people were staring at her including the police men screaming at her to get down, but most of them were still oblivious to her existence.
She took a deep breath and shouted, "EVERYBODY QUIET!"
Amazingly, the noise quietened almost immediately.
They stared at her incredulously, but Rose didn't care at that moment. Her heart was pounding, she could feel how dry her mouth was. At the back of her mind she chafed at the wrongness of having the attention of over 50 people at once. The attention felt like a physical weight.
For the first time she felt sensations in her mind that she had never felt before. Panic, grief, helplessness all wrapped in a nauseating mix that she felt all at once. With a start she realized she was feeling the emotions of the crowd. How was this possible? She didn't have time to ask.
She took another deep breath and pushed it all down. Slowly but surely the weight receded and all her focus went into organizing the chaos in front of her. She set herself and channeled her nurse instructor's drill voice and started barking orders rapid fire.
"IF YOU CAN WALK, MOVE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PARKING LOT!"
"EMT'S, STOP TWIDDLING YOUR THUMBS AND HELP THE RESIDENTS TRIAGE."
JUNIOR RESIDENTS, FROM NOW ON YOU DEAL WITH YELLOW'S AND LEAVE THE RED'S TO THE SENIORS!"
"POLICE OFFICERS, GET THESE PEOPLE OUTTA HERE. SHOOT ANYONE THAT CROSSES THAT CORDON IF THEY'RE NOT CURRENTLY INJURED OR SICK"
