Our Vows Fulfilled

This is my contribution to the 750 Word Project 2025. It's either a Sci-Fi & Fantasy story with a Loving Wives theme or a Loving Wives story set in a fantasy world. Be warned: it is much darker than my usual work.

This story was written for the 2025 Literotica 750 Word Challenge, below this line are exactly 750 words:

The tent flap fluttered in the dying breeze. The corpse of a Golden Sentinel guarded its entrance, even in death, marking the passage between daylight and darkness, hope and death.

She stood naked and alone in the pavilion, her golden hair flowing around her in waves, like a halo or benediction. The bodies of our children lay scattered around her, twisted in death. It was a mercy—she spared them from me. She looked calm, almost welcoming, as she watched me enter. But at her sight, the memories consumed me.

When I came of age, my brother, the Emperor, named me Fist of his armies, and I led them to victory. Cities and nations surrendered before our imperial might—except one. Alone among nations, it stood firm, rejecting our demands and rallying others to its cause.

After a year-long siege, we breached its walls, and our victory was complete, as was their destruction. The city was razed, and the ground salted where it had once stood so that nothing would ever grow there again. Its people were killed or enslaved and sent to the emperor as tribute.

But, amongst the tribute, one woman stood tall, her head unbowed and her back unbent. Her beauty was unmatched; her eyes held mine, and I couldn't look away. I took her as my slave, then concubine and consort, and, finally, my wife. She was the one treasure I kept for myself from all my campaigns. She became my most trusted advisor and my deepest betrayer.

In my tenth year as Fist, I was sent to quell an incursion by the Iron Horde in the far west. She was with child when I left, so she stayed at court while I was on campaign. Months later, when the rumors of her infidelity and my brother's betrayal finally reached me, I descended into madness. I thought she loved only me, but her beauty was unmatched, and none can deny the emperor.

With my armies at my back, I vowed to destroy everything my brother loved or held dear. I swept through the empire, leaving desolation and destruction in my wake, driven by grief and my need for vengeance. Now, having won the final terrible battle, his body lay broken on the field outside, my vow almost fulfilled.

She was all that was left.

"He loved you more than anything in this world."

I knew she spoke the truth.

I prepared my sword, lashing it tightly to the central post of the pavilion. She didn't resist as I took her in my arms and thrust forward so that we were wedded, one final time, by its blade.

"It is done. Our blood is the final price of your betrayal."

She smiled at me then, as blood sullied her white teeth and trickled from her mouth. But it was a smile of victory, not defeat. The anger flared within me.

"How can you smile when you are dying, and all that you love lies in ruins around your feet?"

She started to laugh, but it became a cough as her lungs rattled with blood.

"I was killed long ago, but it took all these years for my body to fall. You took everything I loved from me—my people, my city, my family, and my true love—my king. I vowed on his body, and by our love, that you would suffer the same fate. Now, you have become the vehicle of my vengeance.

"Know this before you die. Your brother never broke faith with you, even at the end. He honored me as your wife, and that is all. I planted the rumors of infidelity and sent servants, slaves from my former nation, to bear false witness and enrage you to the point of madness. I counseled your brother to show restraint while you gathered your armies until it was too late, and he could no longer contain your rage.

"Now, because of your love for me, your people starve, your cities burn, your line is no more, and your brother's body lies broken and cast down. By springtime, barbarians will pick the flesh from the bones of your empire, and eventually, even its name will be lost to time.

"Soon, I will be in the arms of my king once again, and you will die unloved and unmourned, your very name cursed as a kinslayer."

I watched in despair as the light faded from her eyes. Our vows fulfilled, and her vengeance complete.
