...........................................................................................................................

I nearly smash the alarm clock when it goes off. I am not a morning person. But then it strikes me, it's my last Monday of school! Yeah! I swing out of bed and shuffle across to my bathroom, and of course the frumpy girl in the mirror with the bad morning hair almost frightens me. After doing my "business" and brushing my teeth I take a quick shower, loving the smell of strawberries from my shampoo and my bodywash. Drying off I walk to my closet, and as usual I just grab a pair of skinny jeans, a top and a sweater, not really care if it all matches. As long as I can wear one of the fifteen pairs of Converse I have I am happy. I only dry shoulder length straight dark brown hair and as per usual I do not use make-up, only some lipgloss. Grabbing my schoolbag I run down the stairs to the packhouse's kitchen. Packhouse you ask? Oh, I did not introduce myself, I am Kilare (pronounced kee-laa-ree just shorter) Selena Thompson. And I am a werewolf.

Yes, there are werewolves. My dad Kinton is the Alpha of our pack (like a wolfpack only so much more), the Blue Moon pack, which means he is the leader and everybody listens to him and respects him big time. And we have this big-ass building that looks like an apartment building but built out of stone that a lot of the pack members live in. Especially those who have not found their mates yet after they shift for the first time, usually at the first full moon after their sixteenth birthday. Having Alpha blood in me I shifted earlier at thirteen, six years ago, and I love my wolf Jenny who is only now waking up. The packhouse is also where everybody trains not only to be warriors but also how to live with and control your wolf. A mate is actually short for soul-mate. The Moon Goddess grants every werewolf a life-time soul-mate. You find them between the age of sixteen and seventeen, and on the rare occasion some of us only find them later. You cannot be without each other for a long time, you complete each other, you are linked together almost as if there is an invisible rope binding your souls together and even your wolves are linked. A lot of the times when a werewolf dies their mate will follow shortly after. Yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah. I am one of the few rare ones and I am so happy about it. But more about that later.

I walk into the kitchen and the pack members there greet me warmly. It is not always that nice being the Alpha's youngest child. My oldest brother Mathew, who is going to be the next Alpha when my dad retires, and his mate Rose are talking to my mother by the back door and as they see me they all smile at me fondly. "Morning Honey!"

"Morning Kilare!",

"Hello Kee!". See, they treat me as if I am a kid and I am nineteen for Pete's sakes! Then I feel my dad's arms go around me and he gives me a bear hug. This I allow him and only him to do.

"Good morning sunshine."

He grumbles in his deep voice.

"Morning Alpha, morning Luna, morning douchebag, morning Rose." I say formally, trying to piss them off and only succeeding with my brother who just stares at me, huffs and walks off with Rose grabbing his hand to keep him calm. That's another thing that a mate does for your, they keep you calm and happy. My mom is the Luna, that's what we call the Alpha's mate, and the mother of the pack. Both my parents just laugh at me, used to my quirky sense of humour and my dad ruffles my hair, knowing it will piss me off.

"Last Monday of school heh!" dad rumbles and although I am still a little peeved about my hair, I smile up at him. I have to because although I am 5'10" tall he still towers above me. Werewolf males are big and tall, and the Alpha is even taller. "Yes daddy! But if I don't hurry I am going to be late!" and I jump up and kiss him quickly before I grab an apple from the table and run out the door.

As I walk over to my truck I hear the voice of my BFFF Nicky shouting me to wait. Nicky is the daughter of my dad's Beta, Beta Morris, and we have been together since I can remember. A Beta is like a second-in-command, helping the Alpha run the pack.

"Hey Kee! Wait up!"

She is a little out of breath when she gets to me, and in typical spontaneous Nicky fashion she grabs me in a bear-hug and spins me around.

"Geez girl! We saw each other last night!"

She puts me down and laughs at me, her baby blues sparkling in her face as she wipes backs the loose stragglers of blond hair that escaped her bun. She is almost as tall as me, with a bod that makes the guys drool and a rack that catches the eye. I am not going to do the "I hate my body" thing, I am a little willowy and would kill to have a body like hers but I am comfortable and confident in mine.

"I know, I know! But I missed you!"

Her bubbly personality balances out my reserved one. She carried on talking while we got into my truck and she kept it up all the way to school, half an hour's drive away from our pack's town Waverley, in the alliance town Huntington. On the outskirts of town she became more serious.

"Kee, On Friday it is graduation. Both of us have not found our mates and since there are no new people at school it seems as if we are not going to find ours. That means we get to go to college in the city. Are you looking forward to it?" "Hell yeah!"

I growled. It has been a dream of mine to see more than just my hometowns since I can remember. And if I can get a chance to go overseas I would too. All the unmated kids get the chance to go to college in the city, to help them find their mates, instead of going to the small college here in Huntington. It also helps everyone to keep up to date about what happens in the human world, aside from what we see on television, we do not attract all that many human tourists. And as me and Nicky are both unmated, we will get to go! Yeah!

We pull in at the school and I remind myself, countdown: 5 days to go in Huntington High. The town of Huntington is right on the border of three packs so all the kids from the packs attend it. The three packs are also in an alliance, so although there are still some friendly rivalry between the packs and the normal high school crap goes on, usually everyone gets along. Why I am nineteen, almost twenty, and still in high school you ask? A lot of us are older than the normal high school kids in similar grades, as the training in pack duty sometimes causes us to miss out on school.

Nicky and I were lucky to get lockers right next to each other and as I get my stuff for the first period my wolf Jenny is starting to annoy me. At some stage during the morning preparing for school she started getting restless and started pacing in my head. We get along great but sometimes she is the death of me!

What's wrong Jenny? Talk to me...

She doesn't answer me for a bit.

I am just restless

I smile at her confession and answer her back.

No shit Sherlock

She just huffs at me and carries on pacing. As we go to homeroom, Nicky chattering away and me zoning her out as usual, I also start getting to be nervous. Something is wrong, something is different about today. I try to shrug it off but it lingers in my mind like morning mist. Luckily our homeroom class is also the class for my first period so I get to my usual seat and settle it. I was still apprehensive because Jenny was going nuts on me and I started to get irritated with her. What the hell is wrong with her? She is never like this! And then it happens. The most delectable smell in the world hits my nose, with a hint of human, like...like...fresh rolls, cinnamon and sugar. I look up and saw a teacher that I did not recognize. Where is Mrs Ward? He stood there, his clothes the same nice colour brown: chinos, loafers and an open-necked shirt. He looked to be in his early 20's and he was way too relaxed for a human to be in front of a class full of werewolves. His longish light brown hair makes him look boyish but when he speaks his voice is surprisingly rich and full.

"Settle down!" he says firmly and to my surprise, and the whole class' I think, his voice sounded almost like an Alpha's tone and everyone obeyed. I am still looking for the source of that beautiful smell so I start to look around. "My name is Ulrich Mannenheim and I am your substitute teacher in the place of Mrs Ward who has a family emergency. Before you ask, yes I am a human. I am also a Druid and I am aware that I am standing in front of a class full of werewolves. Your principal and Alpha Kinton are friends of mine so they asked me to fill in. Your Alpha Council approved it as well."

Then he looks at me and it is as if the world stands still and nothing else matters. His eyes changes colour from green to blue and I realize, this smell of fresh rolls, cinnamon and sugar comes from him! A strong feel of lust and love overcomes me and I gasp softly. To confirm it Jenny starts jumping up and down and yipping like a pup as she shouts: MATE! MATE! MATE!

NO! NO! NO! I wailed in my mind as on the one hand I see my dreams of seeing the human world slip away and on the other hand I use all my control to keep Jenny from running over to him and marking him! And to growl out MINE! From the way he slightly pales as the same feelings that is assailing me is reflected in his eyes, I know that he realizes exactly what is going on and I almost smile at him. And then the reality of the situation hits me: my mate is not only human, but a teacher in my school. My dearest Moon Goddess, WHY?!

I whistle as I walk down the familiar halls, unbeknownst to many I have been here before. I shudder as I think how long ago that was but smile to myself. Being as old as I am does not make everything seem easy, and although I have seen and experienced a lot I do not know everything as my kids used to think. My heart aches when I think of them, and their funerals. Before we get all maudlin let me explain: my name is Ulrich Mannenheim but I was known by two different names before. Why, you ask. Although I am a normal human being, I have been blessed by the Goddess. I have been to my children's funerals, not through illness or accident but all four of them died of old age. I currently look as if I'm in my early 20's but I am 142 years old, I have been blessed by the Goddess. I should reach 200 years at a minimum. But I shake off the gloom and walk to where the class is that I am going to use for the next week. I have a premonition that I can't get a handle on, but I have learned to let them run their course, and I don't worry about it anymore.

I smile as I approach the class, the usual noise of a group of school kids reach my ears. Happy days! As I walk into the class the loveliest smell that I have ever smelt assails my senses and it takes all my self-control not to gasp. It is vanilla with a strong undercurrent of apple blossoms, and I slowly take a deep whiff. Wow! Outwardly I am calm, collected and almost suave but inwardly all kinds of weird emotions go through me. I keep my thoughts inward and I get the class settled. As I keep on talking, using a tone of voice that I learned all young werewolves listens to and that includes future Alphas. I gave the appearance of being in control as I was speaking, but the scent in my nose was overwhelming and I slid my gaze across the classroom, trying to isolate the source. Until my eyes met those of one of the female students in the class, and the world stood still. I could feel my eyes change colour as the most intense feeling of lust and love I have ever felt comes over me, and I paled slightly. Professional that I am there were no hitch in my speech or anything and I carried on with my homeroom teacher duties. As I turned to the board on the wall away from the class it hit me like a sledgehammer: I have just been mated to a werewolf, and a young one at that! I was too flabbergasted to swear, even to myself, and all I thought was: Great day in the morning! Goddess, I trust You know what You are doing. I carry on as if nothing is wrong, and I learn that the lady's name is Kilare Thompson. This is an even bigger complication, she is the youngest daughter of my friend Kinton Thompson who is the Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack. I look at her the same amount of time I spend on each student, and I am impressed. She has dark brown hair, hazel coloured eyes in a heart-shaped face. She is not a classical beauty but the signs are there that she will grow old gracefully. How I got through homeroom and Supernatural History, that she was also attending, I do not know. It was obvious affecting her too but she kept a stoic face and my regard for her upped a notch. But when the bell rang for the period to be over and she stood up I saw and felt sadness in her. The mate-bond between us so strong that I could pick it up, and I tried to send her positive thoughts. She visibly picked up a little and I felt better when I saw that. I could also see that she was close to my 5'11" and that her willowy body is in perfect proportions. But her leaving for the next class without us speaking or acknowledging what has happen left me feeling empty. I sat down behind my desk in the class room to think, I had no classes for the next two periods and I decided to tackle the bull by the horns. I fished my cellphone out of my drawer and taking a deep breath I dialed Alpha Kinton Thompson.

"Well hello there my druid friend." He answered, recognizing my number. "And what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Hello Kinton." I replied. "I was hoping that I could see you about an interesting development if possible. I'll come out to Waverley if needed."

"It sounds serious. But no need, I am in Huntington on pack business. When are you available?"

"I have two hours to spare now if it is fine with you."

"Perfect. Meet me at The Forest Diner in ten minutes."

"Thank you, I'll be there. Goodbye."

"Goodbye Ulrich."

I disengage the call and take a deep breath, here goes nothing.

Ulrich nurses a coffee, he was there within 5 minutes. He looks up as the door opens and in strides Kinton, a very big werewolf with the aura of an Alpha exuding from him like an invisible shield. After the greetings are over and we both sit with a cup of coffee in front of us Kinton looks at me quizzically. "You look troubled my friend." he rumbles. Ulrich is honest and to the point.

"I am the mate of a werewolf."

Kinton chuckless humorlessly.

"You don't sound too happy about it. But you have been alone for a long while now. "

Ulrich looks him in eye as he calmly says: "There are a few obstacles. Like the age gap, I am a 142 years old. I am a human druid. And I am your daughter's mate."

Kinton's eyes immediately turns black and Ulrich can see him struggling to contain his wolf.

"Why do you think I came to you first?" He sees Kinton visibly relax, and give a dry smile.

"Thank you for that. I need to convene an Alpha's Council, this is going to be bigger than what we realize. We are you staying? I think in the light of this, I would like to invite you to come and stay at the packhouse. There is a cottage that would suit you perfectly in that it is close to the packhouse, but not part of it. I can send one my warriors to move your stuff if you don't mind, then you can come straight there after school. "

For the first time during their talk Ulrich smiles genuinely. At the packhouse huh! Where you can keep an eye on me!

"Thank you, I appreciate it. I am staying in the Lupini Motel, room 201. And please warn them not to try and open the two wooden chests, the chests are charmed and the warriors might get hurt."

Kilare's face is the usual reserved self, but inside she is in a turmoil. She hides it so well however that not even Nicky picks up anything. Mate...teacher...Ulrich...nice eyes... ugh!... human... druid... beautiful smile...ugh! Her mind is whirling but every so often she finds herself almost smiling as she starts thinking about the way his hair has a fringe and that she wants to just tuck it out of his eyes...those green and blue eyes...UGH KILARE, stop being a perv! She thinks to herself and she feels Jenny's laughter.

Shut up you horny she-wolf! She growls at Jenny.

You know it baby! Here comes the good times!

She floats through the day, not really there, and by the time school's out she decides to look for help in this dilemma. She mind-links her dad.

Alpha are you available this afternoon please?

Yes my darling, I am at the packhouse. Do you want to talk to me?

Yes Alpha. Its an "office matter".

Then come straight to my office when you arrive.

Thank you Alpha.

Kilare feels a little bit better, she only calls her dad Alpha when it comes to pack business and calling it an office matter lets him know its serious. She sighs as she walks to her truck, tuning out Nicky who is her usual bubbly self, and finds herself thinking of a certain human's smile...

As he has completed all his work and his last class before the end of school day, Ulrich decides to drive to his new abode at the Blue Moon packhouse. On the way there he gets a call on his cellphone, Alpha Kinton is looking for him.

"Hello Kinton." He answers the phone.

"Ulrich, I have spoken to the other Alphas in the Alliance and they are on the way. Is it possible that that you can also be here?"

"I am actually on my way; I should be there within the next 20 minutes or so. What time do you want to meet?"

"Great coincidence, I'll have my Beta meet you to ease things in the packhouse."

"That will help, thank you. I'll see you in a few minutes."

With that they ring off and Ulrich enjoys the drive through the forests that comprise the packlands. When he finally pulls up and stops at the packhouse he finds someone waiting for him, a big buff looking dude with sandy hair and brown eyes. Analysing the man's aura he comes to the conclusion that this is the Beta of the pack. The previous time that he was here, the personnel looked a little different and this Beta would have been in diapers. His conclusion is confirmed as the Beta introduces himself when Ulrich gets out of the car.

"You must be Ulrich Mannenheim. Alpha Kinton asked me to receive you, my name is Morris and I am the Beta of the pack." Shaking hands and smiling up at the big man, all 6'8" of him, Ulrich assesses him quickly and find himself liking the young man who looks to be in his middle twenties.

"I thank you Beta Morris for your kindness. It is a real pleasure to meet you."

Ulrich looks up at the packhouse and smiles at the familiar sight. It still looks like a cross between a medieval mansion and an oversized apartment building, but built out of stone. They walk in in silence and at some stage Ulrich sees Morris' eyes go hazy and he realizes that he is mind-linking someone. The next moment it is apparent who he was mind-linking as the eyes of all the people in the building swivel to him, some a little hostile, others neutral but most shining with curiosity. Morris address the 30 or so people hanging around in the giant living space sternly.

"This is Ulrich Mannenheim, the Alpha's friend. He will be staying with us a while so everybody treat him with the respect he deserves or they will have to deal with the leaders of the pack."

Being used to people staring at him, Ulrich isn't fazed. He smiles warmly at everyone and give a lazy wave while greeting them.

"Good afternoon everyone, it is an honour to be here. I am sure I will get to know you during the time that I am here and I am looking forward to it. But if you will excuse us, I need to go see Alpha Kinton and it is not a good thing to make an alpha wait as you all know."
