I nearly smash the alarm clock when it goes off. I am not a morning person. But then it strikes me, it's my last Monday of school! Yeah! I swing out of bed and shuffle across to my bathroom, and of course the frumpy girl in the mirror with the bad morning hair almost frightens me. After doing my "business" and brushing my teeth I take a quick shower, loving the smell of strawberries from my shampoo and my bodywash. Drying off I walk to my closet, and as usual I just grab a pair of skinny jeans, a top and a sweater, not really care if it all matches. As long as I can wear one of the fifteen pairs of Converse I have I am happy. I only dry shoulder length straight dark brown hair and as per usual I do not use make-up, only some lipgloss. Grabbing my schoolbag I run down the stairs to the packhouse's kitchen. Packhouse you ask? Oh, I did not introduce myself, I am Kilare (pronounced kee-laa-ree just shorter) Selena Thompson. And I am a werewolf.
Yes, there are werewolves. My dad Kinton is the Alpha of our pack (like a wolfpack only so much more), the Blue Moon pack, which means he is the leader and everybody listens to him and respects him big time. And we have this big-ass building that looks like an apartment building but built out of stone that a lot of the pack members live in. Especially those who have not found their mates yet after they shift for the first time, usually at the first full moon after their sixteenth birthday. Having Alpha blood in me I shifted earlier at thirteen, six years ago, and I love my wolf Jenny who is only now waking up. The packhouse is also where everybody trains not only to be warriors but also how to live with and control your wolf. A mate is actually short for soul-mate. The Moon Goddess grants every werewolf a life-time soul-mate. You find them between the age of sixteen and seventeen, and on the rare occasion some of us only find them later. You cannot be without each other for a long time, you complete each other, you are linked together almost as if there is an invisible rope binding your souls together and even your wolves are linked. A lot of the times when a werewolf dies their mate will follow shortly after. Yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah. I am one of the few rare ones and I am so happy about it. But more about that later.
I walk into the kitchen and the pack members there greet me warmly. It is not always that nice being the Alpha's youngest child. My oldest brother Mathew, who is going to be the next Alpha when my dad retires, and his mate Rose are talking to my mother by the back door and as they see me they all smile at me fondly. "Morning Honey!"
"Morning Kilare!",
"Hello Kee!". See, they treat me as if I am a kid and I am nineteen for Pete's sakes! Then I feel my dad's arms go around me and he gives me a bear hug. This I allow him and only him to do.
"Good morning sunshine."
He grumbles in his deep voice.
"Morning Alpha, morning Luna, morning douchebag, morning Rose." I say formally, trying to piss them off and only succeeding with my brother who just stares at me, huffs and walks off with Rose grabbing his hand to keep him calm. That's another thing that a mate does for your, they keep you calm and happy. My mom is the Luna, that's what we call the Alpha's mate, and the mother of the pack. Both my parents just laugh at me, used to my quirky sense of humour and my dad ruffles my hair, knowing it will piss me off.
"Last Monday of school heh!" dad rumbles and although I am still a little peeved about my hair, I smile up at him. I have to because although I am 5'10" tall he still towers above me. Werewolf males are big and tall, and the Alpha is even taller. "Yes daddy! But if I don't hurry I am going to be late!" and I jump up and kiss him quickly before I grab an apple from the table and run out the door.
As I walk over to my truck I hear the voice of my BFFF Nicky shouting me to wait. Nicky is the daughter of my dad's Beta, Beta Morris, and we have been together since I can remember. A Beta is like a second-in-command, helping the Alpha run the pack.
"Hey Kee! Wait up!"
She is a little out of breath when she gets to me, and in typical spontaneous Nicky fashion she grabs me in a bear-hug and spins me around.
"Geez girl! We saw each other last night!"
She puts me down and laughs at me, her baby blues sparkling in her face as she wipes backs the loose stragglers of blond hair that escaped her bun. She is almost as tall as me, with a bod that makes the guys drool and a rack that catches the eye. I am not going to do the "I hate my body" thing, I am a little willowy and would kill to have a body like hers but I am comfortable and confident in mine.
"I know, I know! But I missed you!"
Her bubbly personality balances out my reserved one. She carried on talking while we got into my truck and she kept it up all the way to school, half an hour's drive away from our pack's town Waverley, in the alliance town Huntington. On the outskirts of town she became more serious.
"Kee, On Friday it is graduation. Both of us have not found our mates and since there are no new people at school it seems as if we are not going to find ours. That means we get to go to college in the city. Are you looking forward to it?" "Hell yeah!"
I growled. It has been a dream of mine to see more than just my hometowns since I can remember. And if I can get a chance to go overseas I would too. All the unmated kids get the chance to go to college in the city, to help them find their mates, instead of going to the small college here in Huntington. It also helps everyone to keep up to date about what happens in the human world, aside from what we see on television, we do not attract all that many human tourists. And as me and Nicky are both unmated, we will get to go! Yeah!
We pull in at the school and I remind myself, countdown: 5 days to go in Huntington High. The town of Huntington is right on the border of three packs so all the kids from the packs attend it. The three packs are also in an alliance, so although there are still some friendly rivalry between the packs and the normal high school crap goes on, usually everyone gets along. Why I am nineteen, almost twenty, and still in high school you ask? A lot of us are older than the normal high school kids in similar grades, as the training in pack duty sometimes causes us to miss out on school.
Nicky and I were lucky to get lockers right next to each other and as I get my stuff for the first period my wolf Jenny is starting to annoy me. At some stage during the morning preparing for school she started getting restless and started pacing in my head. We get along great but sometimes she is the death of me!
What's wrong Jenny? Talk to me...
She doesn't answer me for a bit.
